Title: Hot Red Six exhaust systems Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on November 30, 2005, 12:13:43 AM I'd like to hear about peoples exhaust systems and what they thought of them.
I have fitted the extractors to the car and will look at the exhaust soon. Currently the collector goes down to a 2" outlet, further up it looks to be 2 1/2" or 2 1/4". I have 2 near new 2" slight offset lukey mufflers, which I would like to use but it is not imperative. From memory I had a 2 1/4" system on the same motor in my Torrie, with a custom straight through muffler and a "Rocket" muffler which was straight through. I have a Hot Red 6 ( XU1 Spec ), and have thought about twin system or single ect. Want a good sound though.....you know....that great old throaty sound only a Holden 6 can make ! Ideas also greatly appreciated. ( sorry for jumping on your thread Stinky, but saved opening a new one )> Cheers Mark Title: Re: Hot Red Six exhaust systems Post by: Dave_EH on November 30, 2005, 08:55:46 AM Stinky,
I found it difficult to find info on what works best. I know fast_eddie has just fitted a dual system to his grey so he may be able to help out. Mark has suggested in the past that you get a better note out of stainless - depends on your budget i guess. I was very keen on a dual system but got talked out of it in the end - apparently you lose all the bark of the note - but thats only what i've been told. I ended up using X2 headers which run 1and3/4 inch pipes down past the gearbox where it goes into a collector - this just looks like a 2and3/4 inch pipe to me - then into a Redback slight offset (mandrell bent) muffler and exits as a 2 and 1/4 inch pipe over the diff. I wanted to exit as a 2&1/2 inch after the muffler and go under the diff housing but the exhaust shop really wanted to go over. I've compared with a few friends with red 6's and the note is a little better under throttle with the smaller diameter pipe and over the diff. My car has nice note at idle when standing behind it but quiet from the drivers seat. overall noise at full throttle is quite loud - probably loud enough to be pulled over. Craig A is currently searching for an old hot dog to beef up an exhaust note - maybe this is what you guys need. Surely after 40 years of this motor somone has worked out a method - pipe size/muffler location/resonator. Looking forward to hearing how you get on Cheers Dave Title: Re: Hot Red Six exhaust systems Post by: nicko on November 30, 2005, 11:26:56 AM twin systems on red and grey's produce very different sounds ,a red with twin 2inch has a real bark up in the revs, and a grey with cast headers has a very v8 sort of sound unlike red 6's which never sound like an v8
