Title: Baby Moons to 13" wheels
Post by: TAYZ on November 18, 2005, 06:37:33 AM
I have just purchased a set of baby moons for the FC.  Unfortunantely they are just a little bit too big and will not fit tight.  I dont want to build up the lugs with a mig as it will stuff my powdercoated wheels.  Has anyone out there had this trouble or can some one hopefully shed a some light on how too make them a tight fit??  As I said they are just that little bit too big and wont stay on the rim

Get out the MIG  ;D
I had the same problem with the Wagon, I had to build up the lug tip and behind the tip to get them to fit properly.

Another thought, get a piece of wire and tack it carefully to the lip of the moon cap to build up the rim enough to hold onto the lugs. As long as you don't put too much heat into the chrome it won't discolour.

I have a similar problem with mine, haven't investigated too far yet, but, can you not bend the inner lip of the cap a little so it fits snugger?.... is that a word, snugger?

I did what SRV mentioned when I ran babymoons on my FC. You just gotta be carefull to make sure they fit tight......you wouldn't want 1 coming off on the motorway.

Ok, after hitting my head against a brick wall and not wanting to go any where near a welder, I have sealed with auto glass sealer some tubular rubber aginst the inside of each disc, i then fitted them and they seemed to fit fairly tight.........  I will have to let the sealant dry and see what happens from there, SRV i will take a pic this weekend and get it posted, i must say they really look the part.  I have now, 15 minutes later slightly bent the caps over where the lugs go and with the rubber it is a tight fit, post pic this weekend  ( will send to stinky to do.....)

Although not baby moons, hopefully this may help.  I run 13" Moon Hollywood Flipper caps on my EK and had the same problem with fitting. The rims differ from eachother slightly, so one would fit perfectly while another would be loose.
My rims are not that flash, so a quick touchup with a mat white rattle can, and I ran some gaffa tape around the problem areas of fitment.
Popped the caps on and they are still on with absolutely no trouble what-so ever ***as he touches wood***.

Just wondering where you buy baby moon caps, I'm after some to suit 14" for my fj.

Thanks

mine were $55 for a set of four a couple of years ago and they fit a HKTG rim perfectly.

An alternative is a truck accessory store, Hyway I think?, they have various hub caps and may have the correct size. I got the set on the wagon from there, they fit a 13" holden rim after a few mods.

just thinking about  putting a set of HG std wheels with 205/70x14 tyres on to my Fc and was in at a Truck parts store just the other day and saw what looked like baby moon caps just may have to look into it further ::)
but just a question will HG rims fit with a HR frnt end I know HK will dont they have differernt offsets?????

As I have found, and Stinky helped me solve, HK are offset about 1/2" further inwards than HT-HG wheels.

I have HK rims on the front of mine and solved the problem of them hitting the tie rod end with a spacer behind the disc.

HG wheels you won't have a problem with, though 205's will be too wide, try 185's instead.

ok thanks for that will see if I can get 185/70x14 im taking a bare rim into the truck parts shop to see if a moon cap off a big rig will fit
will 205/70x14's fit on the rear with a HR diff or am I better off with 60  profiles?
cheers Tony
