Hi,
You can fit a 185x80 on a standard rim which are the same height as a cross ply and they look great.

175/70 is about the recommended limit on stock rims, but your local tyre bloke would know.  Standard HR rims will take 185/80, which are a nice big tyre, not that much smaller than original "conventional" tyres.  175/70 have a significantly smaller rolling circumference, which will cause the speedo to over-report driving speed (and the motor to work harder to reach the same "real" speed).

What's wrong with 4" crossply tyres, anyway?  Much more exciting ;D

cheers

were do you find such a tyre.
I use 185/70/13 there used to be a 185SR but they dont seem to be around anymore, i had a torana rim sitting around that was 205/65, maybe thay are wider rims than FC.

I bought a set of ribbon whitewalled 185/80s from Torcu Tyres in Norfolk Street Greenacre for $100/corner about 12 months ago.  They either had them in stock or got them from somewhere the same day.

I went to Beaurepaires asked them for something close to rolling diameter of the conventionals.  They gave me 185/75R13.  They seem to be pretty close.  The speedo's as accurate as I could hope for out of a 46 year old car.  Brand is SAVA 75  -  never heard of them.  Put them on the car to go to Jindabyne - no complaints.

They're labelled "SUMITOMO SC890 A/S"

I recently bought a set of Michelin MX 175 R13s, which are also coded 86T. These look nearly the same height as the crossplys I took off.

They weren't cheap though, about $140 each. These were the tallest I could find. Got them from Bob Jane.

John  :)
