Title: steering box leak Post by: fcdunedin on October 31, 2005, 10:21:57 PM hello can someone please help,i noticed there was no oil in my steering box,i filled it up and next day there was a big puddle on the driveway.is there a gasket or oil seal which pitman arm attaches to bottom of box?I would like to order one can any one help with prt # or similar? thank you Chris..

There is definately a seal. Rares sell the whole kit (P# SBFEK), as in the photo, so I'm pretty sure they would have the seal. Maybe someone can confirm? This stopped mine from leaking anyway :-) Cheers, Craig. If you pull your seal out you will find its just a metal retaining ring filled with 'stuff'...I assume that is what this is...

The web page noted above also shows Penrite steering box lube which I am reliably informed is the best stuff to fill your box with (so to speak).. I rebuild steering boxes for a living, so I can help you out. The original seal or 'packing' was just cork, with a metal retaining ring, which was 'sort of' OK when FE/FCs were new but now most of it has disappeared or crumbled away. The seal that Rares (& others) supply is a modern TC type seal made of Nitrile 70 rubber & is great, as long as the pitman shaft is not rusty & pitted in that area & the bronze bushes are not badly worn. The best lubricant to use is a modern hi-temp light grease like lithium wheel bearing grease or a Moly based grease, oil is not really required. Dr Terry.
