Title: Handbrake cable problem
Post by: Dave_EH on September 07, 2005, 08:37:01 AM
This quetsion relates specifically to an EH holden, though the principles should be exactly like an FE-FC.

I changed the old rear shoes and cylinders to HR type shoes and cylinders to suit the HR disc front end.

After completing this and adjusting the brakes manually, I attempted to re-connect the Ubolt on the intermediate lever and the cable is now too short by about 15-20mm.

What could have gone wrong?

Check the route of the cable:  is it running underneath the tailshaft?  Or even simply holoked around an exhaust pipe clamp?

Martin,
could be the case it was dark when I was finishing up.  Will have a look.

Another more serious problem has emerged - after looking at a manual it seems the self adjusting mechanism has been removed from my brake set up - has anyone heard of this been done before?  Is is somehting that used to be done in the past?

It seems very odd.

Cheers
Dave

Dave,
It was a common thing done by mechanics years ago to leave the self adjusters off.

Thanks Ace,
That is what I suspected and brings three further questions:
1) Will it be a problem for Road Worthy?
2) How often should they be manualy adjusted?
3) Should I leave it as is or find some self adjusters?
Regards
Dave

Dave

I removed the self adjusters out of my HZ.
I felt they assisted in wearing out the shoes faster and adding to fuel consumption.

I adjust mine each year before rego check - (travel 20,000 kl per year), yet to find someone energetic enough to disassemble a car to check internal components.

Thanks for the tips Andrew.

Turns out EH didnt have self adjusters, they must have been illustrating HD in the Manual.

Thanks to everone who has helped out with my brake questions over the past year or so.  I finally finished rebuilding the whole system from head to toe this afternoon - good feeling and went from knowing nothing at all to at least been upto date with 50 year old brake systems!

Cheers
