Title: steering column/indicator wiring help.
Post by: MikeM on May 18, 2005, 09:36:14 AM

I have a white wire from the steering column that from the wiring diagram in the manual shows as a connection to the brake switch, this white wire appears to have been broken (snapped in the column).  The issue I have is that  the indicators work front and rear, but only the right hand side dash light works and I believe it has something to do with this wire (this right hand side dash light works even at times I have swapped wires to see if the wires themselves are fine, so this is wierding me out, but maybe related to this white wire) .   I have checked out the wiring of the car and it maybe a little different from the wiring diagram in the manual, the way I read the diagram has the indicators on the stop light circuit with what I use as the indicators as reverse lights?

Do I just need to spend some more time with this to get a better understanding, or is there something that I am missing? Does the white wire connect to anything in reality?  I have spent hours on this so far, no wonder it takes so long to build this car :)

As always, any guidance is appeciated.

Mike,

The manual shows the wiring diagram effective May '58 (with flashing brake-lights and accessory reversing lights).  It sounds like your car is running amber indicators.  Is this original?  There is an amended wiring diagram for late '59 vehicles that shows the reworked indicator wiring.  I haven't got it with me, but I have got it at home.

Is that any help?

cheers

My car is a late 59 model, so the indicators I believe are original.

Are you able to post a copy of the diagram up? or if the resolution needs to be higher (which I imagine it would) and chance of emailing it to me at mikem@wa.fefcholden.org.au?

Cheers

Mike

I will have a look for it tonight for you.  The one you have is also available from our Tech Info ($2) area, if anyone else is looking for it.

Thanx Ret, it would be appreciated, I might be able to find out what to do with that dodgy white wire (I even pulled the indicator assembly apart, spent an hour trying to put it back together and its just not right :).

My advice to people considering that is DONT, little springs and crap, not pretty :)

Mike

I had the same issue recently when reconnecting indicator assembly and brake lights etc.

I've got both the Factory workshop manual and the aftermarket one put out by Gregory's. I found the Gregory's wiring diagram very simplistic and a lot easier to follow. If it helps I can fax you a copy of the relevant page if you haven't got it and nothing else works.

Seem to recall that I had similar issues with  back and front indicators not working in unison until the white wire was connected to a double connector with two orange wires leading off to primary light switch and courtesy lights.

Hope this helps

Thanx for that I will check it out.  I have a gregories manual that I can review.  I put it away years ago when I got the "proper one", thought I woudl never need it.

Ah, now to find it.  If you do get a chance to send up the diagram it would be good and maybe helpful for others.

OK.  I've had to admit defeat on finding the amended wiring diagram.  Maybe I dreamed the whole thing up.  Gotta lay off the ether :-/

However, what I have got is the wiring diagram for EK ute/van, which appears to be what we need, since the set-up for the rear lights is the same as FCs fitted with amber turn signals.

I've put a copy of it here ($2), since I've had to scan it at a size too big to display here.  Right-click on it and you should be able to d/l it to your machine.

From my (admittedly cursory) examination of it, it looks like the white wire was used in the previous (flashing brake light) version to run power through the brake pedal switch for the indicator's operation.  In the later version, it looks like it powers the reversing light switch?

If that's right, it's unrelated to your indicator problem, which in both versions shows a black wire from the flasher unit up to the tell-tale.

Hope this is some help, and sorry it took so long.

cheers
