Title: How far gone is gone?
Post by: SRVLIVES on March 12, 2005, 08:47:02 AM
The perils of buying a car sight unseen... just had my FC picked up by a mate and he tells me the subframe is rooted with rust. Now while I have relo's in the trade, how far gone would you consider a body to be before scrapping it?

best other thing to do is check a pilar, dog leg, bottom quarters. cills inner and outer an dhow badly the floor pans r gone

i dont believe any of us can say how bad it is without seeing pictures of the car

TorqueFC is right there, pics would help.
Answering your question though, it depends on your budget and ability to do the work yourself. A pro like StreetNeat, Sarge or Fast Eddie's panel man could probably build a car from a rusty roof section. It would take a long though and cost a bomb if you don't do it yourself. Subframes, floor pans and sills can all be purchased, fitting them is the hard part. Find out were all the problems are, make a list and head off to see your relos in the trade. Being relatives they should hopefully give you an honest opinion.

Thanks for the replies guys, just a little bummed with the news was all. It's still at my mates house, hopefully I'll get it in the shop before the week's out and get a pro's opinion as well as some photos.

As Stinky has said it's really up to you to say how far gone is too far. Anything is repairable if you have the hip pocket to fund it, yet from what you have said it sounds like its only a sub-frame which is a bolt on panel and can be replaced or repaired. Have a look around the bottom of the pillars, front & rear screen. If rusted out in these type of places then it's time to have a little think before you start throughing money into it. Some pic's would realy help.

Cheers
