Title: what MIG do I buy?
Post by: oldgmh on December 27, 2004, 11:54:17 PM
I am about to buy a MIG welder and haven't had one before, only a stick welder.
Can anyone give me advice on what to look for - or even a particular one to buy?
It is to be used for mainly old holden work .. you know .. rust repairs, making a lounge out the boot area of a wreck etc.

thanks Earlee

the biggest you can afford but even a 150 amp is good but steer away from 130 or less especially the gasless type,as they cant be used for thick steel like trailers as they wont penetrate for a good weld,150 and bigger can be also used gasless as they have good welding capabilities and wont splutter and carry on like small welders do.so you end up with the best of both worlds as you can turn them down for thinner steel .

i have a secondhand CIG Autopak 150.that did 10 years in a panel shop and still works fine after 4 years in my garage, even though its only a 150 its very big with plenty of adjustments like spot weld timer.i paid $500 for it at a divorce auction but ive seen new 170 in welding shops for $750 that look very nice as prices have tumbled.
