Title: Engine Bay Colour
Post by: Jaheo on December 13, 2004, 03:55:30 AM
I'm looking to restore the Engine bay of my 58 FC which is currently painted in Gloss Black House paint.

What was the original engine bay colour?
Paint codes show original body colour was Adobe Beige over Terracotta.

Also, understand the Grey Motor was Grey but what colour are the add ons (Water Pump?, Manifold etc?).

Any assistance appreciated.

Who the hell paints their house Gloss Black? :-/

Anyway, to answer your questions:

Original engine bay colour seems to have varied a bit by factory.  Many were gloss black, the rest were same colour as guards and bonnet.  I'm not sure that there is an entirely correct answer.

As far as the engine ancillaries are concerned, the two you mention are also "grey engine grey".  Air cleaner, oil breather and generator are gloss black.

Hope that helps,
RET

My FC was built at the Sydney plant and the engine bay is the same colour as the guards and bonnet.
Page 15 in this section of the Forum has some more detail under "grey motor and engine bay colour codes"

As a general rule (there are exceptions - I know) 1958 FC's have body colour firewall and black skirts whilst 1959 FC's have all black engine bays.
I have a list of engine bay colour scheme for FE FC which I can mail out.

To be more specific your firewall should be Terracotta and the skirts black.
Water pump is grey, inlet manifold is grey, outlet manifold is cast iron finish

It should be what is commonly referred to as chassis black which is not shiny, not matt.

I know there is the purists out there, but ditch the matt and go with the "ShinyBits"

If you enjoy cleaning your car regularly.... (yours would be terracotta)

Or, the more practical approach... This subframe has been powdercoated in satin black, while the firewall has been painted in gloss black. However, I'm thinking of bringing the blue down to the panel seam.
