Title: Engine help, Which way do I go ! Post by: Kermit on October 20, 2004, 08:46:15 PM Hi All,
I am hoping that the forum can give me "devine guidance" on the following. I have made up my mind to fit a HR front end into my EK, and as such realise that the outrigger must be changed. I have also become aware that the current 138 is blowing a lot of smoke out of the breather and constantly dripping oil out of the breather. So "assuming" my motor (not the original) needs work / replacement, which of the following options should i go with; 1/ Change outrigger and have my motor recond $2500 2/ Change Outrigger and Buy "Good" secondhand Grey motor, cost approx $250 to 500 3/ Leave HR outrigger in place, buy "Reconditioned 161 motor" cost $1585. I am assuming with this option that the mounts for 161 are same as for HR Front End + manifolds etc off 186 will fit on 161 + that the Grey box will fit straight up to the 161 Forum comments welcome Rgds Mick Title: Re: Engine help, Which way do I go ! Post by: HYSTERIA on October 20, 2004, 09:34:42 PM Good luck finding a good second hand grey motor, I looked for 6 months and found nothing but freshly painted crap. In the end I recoed a second hand grey that I bought out of the trading post, budget for about $2000 for a good reco job for these motors. If originality is not high on your priority list, I would go for a red motor.

If you need a good second hand grey motor I may be able to assist. Engine hasn't been wrecker reconditioned (repainted), and came out of a driving car. You would need to pick it up from my place, in outer western Sydney. Just send me a message on Craig@ctcgroup.com.au. Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Engine help, Which way do I go ! Post by: Dr_Terry on October 21, 2004, 06:30:02 AM Hi Guys.
You have to change the outrigger anyway, even if you do fit a Red motor. The front of the outrigger, with it's single bolt mounting won't fit the EK. Also if you're fitting a Red, the HR mounts have to be moved rearward approx 3 inches because the engine sits further back in the engine bay in FE-EH than it does in HD/HR. Hope this helps.
