Title: firing up the project Post by: Ed on December 14, 2001, 01:00:26 AM Hi, I would like to start up my motor (carbed 308), however have not yet installed the entire wiring.
Could somebody advise me of the most basic wiring set up req'd to start and run a motor. most importantly the starter circuit without killing my expensive starter motor. thanks Title: Re: firing up the project Post by: craiga on December 14, 2001, 09:33:08 PM Hi Ed,
Following is required: Battery -VE to Engine Block using 100AMP or greater cable Battery +VE to Starter using 100AMP or greater cable Battery +VE to Starter Solenoid connector (usually a 'spade' type connector) through a switch. This is your ignition switch and when turned on will cause the starter solenoid to engage and the starter to turn over the engine, so make sure you can access it easily as you will need to turn it off when the engine fires. ;) Battery +VE to Coil +VE Coil -VE to distributor (points) If you have an electronic ignition it may be slightly different so be careful as you may damage the module if connected incorrectly. To run the engine for a short period of time you don't need to connect the alternator, just use a fully charged battery and you will get 20 minutes or more running. :o If you need I can send a basic diagram. Have fun ;D Remember no warranty with this info :P :P Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: firing up the project Post by: Ed on December 14, 2001, 10:18:09 PM Thanks Craig ;D

I WOULD ALSO CONNECT UP A OIL AND TEMP GUAGE. ALSO YOU MAY NEED A EXTERNAL BALLAST RESISTER FOR THE COIL. REGARDS ACE. P.S DONT FORGET TO PRIME THE OIL PUMP BEFORE STARTING. |
