Title: Tasman Mags
Post by: Burnsy on June 23, 2004, 10:05:53 AM
Can someone post a closeup picture of some Tasmans for me please.

How can you identify a real set and what would they be worth (average condition totally painted silver)?

I don't know if what I have found are Tasmans or just some other old mags.

Here are the Tasmans I have got, 13s and 14s.
AFAIK there are other styles too.

Aaah, thought it was too good to be true,  :'( found a set of old alloys that are welded to steel rims and thought they might just be Tasmans but there not.  Guessed they were to ugly to be what everyone seems to want ;)

The "other" style that I believe are Tasmans too are similar to the ones shown but there are 2 grooves cut into each spoke.

This pic is from Alex's (customFC) photo site

Hi Burnsey,is the set you have got 5 alloy spokes (like dragway spokes) in black with chrome steel rim that have spokes welded on to steel on inside edge?

No they are kind of like the other style stinky posted but with cutouts in the machined alloy face. Fairly ugly looking things but they were definitely alloy welded to steel rims

Heres three styles that I know of side by side.
Theres also the sprintmasters of a torana that are fairly similar too.

The ones on the car have a ridge running down the centres of the spoke , to the right are like Stinky's (curved over the spoke) and the left has the chamfered edges.

Must be something else, maybe Torana

No but what are they called when they are all alloy (spokes and rim) and the centre spokes are rough, usually the spokes are painted black.  That is what I have on my car but they have been cleaned back to alloy with no black paint.  Don't kow what they are called

From memory the ones I saw were like the chamfered tasmans but with a triangular slot cut out of the spoke, they looked pretty rough and were fitted to a HR that cam from the eastern states.  The guy who had them had painted the whole thing silver so it was hard to see what they were meant to look like.

No, they were ugly anyway, if I go back there I will take a picture.

What are the all alloy early five spokes called?  Like the ones you posted.

Which post ?
First ones are Tasmans , I think maybe the chamferred style were Hurricanes.
The single pic like a dragway - not sure but they came out factory on a lot of cars in the early seventies, my grandad had some on his prized xb gs falcon from new.

Look at these for ugly but interesting

From memory i think the ones u mean are aunger hustlers black centres polished lip, also came in gold
and silver painted centres. and if im also not mistaken,
stinky has a highly polished set on his fe project i saw at the motorex show, almost mistook them for dragway 5 spokes. They looked good stinky.

I'd tend to agree with Collecta.  They sound like Aunger Hustlers.  Your wheels should (IMO) look like the set on Steve McQueen's Mustang in Bullitt.

Hustlers are, IMO, one of the better looking Australian Wheels, almost up there with Hotwires and Splatts.

These are the mags that I had on the car at the show. They are a cast one piece ROH job.

When I got them they had painted spokes and looked crappy, a bit of elbow grease (and cash) and they look pretty good. Pity they don't fit with the drop spindles on the car.

Alex's photo page is here - http://img38.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/
It's the grey ute, 1st pic in the third row in the Holden Club folder, but Harko has already supplied a better pic.

The wheels on my car are like these, solid alloy with provision for a centre cap to be screwed on in five places.  I have no centre caps so would like to kow what the mag is called so I can try and track some down in the future.

As far as the other set goes, Aunger might be correct but in my opinion they were ugly so they must be different to the ones Spinner was talking about.  If anyone in WA is interested I can give you the number of the guy who has them, I would say you would get them pretty cheap.

Cheers,
Burnsy

Not sure that these are Tasmans (They do have Tasman caps) but they could be what you saw.

i cant remember ever seeing a set of mags like them before but even though they are not the best looking wheel they would be very cool on old holden just because no one else has them.

These were offered for sale on ebay a little while ago.
I was tempted by the fact that they are unusual, but alas, no cash.

Hi Guys.
Yes, they are Tasmans, albiet very rare ones. I am not sure what they are called, but I have 2 NOS ones that I scored in an old car parts store. I will get a shot for you. They fit my Holdens, but I am buggered if I can find a couple more. I wouldn't mind that set if they were still up for sale.

Hey Rob.
They were sold - $200. Now that I think about it, the other reason I did not bid, was because they were suitable for XR XY etc FORD. They were offered for sale by a local dealer though, and I was tempted to take the FC up for a trial fit just in case. :D :D
He also had these wheels for sale at the same time. They were also suitable for XR-XY. Also sold - $281 set

I have made enquiries with the seller regarding any other sets available.

Alex

Alex,

Those wheels in that picture look a lot like a set shown in Graffiti's "Australian Hot Rod Heritage" that's just been released.  They were made by a bloke called Mick H...  I think (poor recall).

There seems to be some interest in these wheels, the guy who has them has not named a price but I will try and get a picture of them to post then anyone who is interested can make an offer and I will see if I can get him to sell.  As I said before, they were on a HR that came from over east.

Remember they are in WA so shipping will be substantial.

Cheers,
Mike
