Nicko,

Put a bit of black cloth in between the speaker and the grille and you won't even be able to see the speaker any more.  Still hear it loud and clear, tho ;D

Good stuff Nicko , You should ry cutting the 6*9hole in the original card or save the original and make one then wrap some old stocking material over it and then you wont see the speaker either. Stealth.

Stealth?  Don't think so if you can turn it up to 25...

How about mounting the sub-woofer under the passenger seat while you're about it?  That should really give your mate something to think about!

cheers

great advice boys but do i have to take it back out again ,just jokin ,i am not using sub as it will require an amp and id rather not subject wiring to the extra strain, plus i must be gettin old as this system goes louder than i will ever need while still giving clear sound as i used one of a $480 speaker set,and i hate those ricer thump thump cars.gee im gettin too fat to climb under the dash again so speaker cloth "whilst being a great idea" ;) can wait

Hey Nicko,

Do ya have just the one speaker?

Twins down the back as well?

I was going to mount "Hilda's" stereo in a similar pozzie. Was wondering about getting two speakers behind the grill or behind kick panels etc.  I guess one up the front and two down the back would sound good.

Good idea about the cloth too guys. You just might have saved me doing two trips under the dash.

hi emu,
i have managed to find a pair of 4 inch speakers with rotating tweeters ( sounds dirty ;D) which fit very neatly behind the grill. they are Jensen's model # XS1402.
great sound when compared with other more expensive brands. and the rotating tweeters mean you can angle them towards you and get a cleaner sound.
i just sandwiched them between pieces of 3mm MDF, painted black. though the idea of black cloth/stocking has got me thinking again

amazingly after someone on forum suggested the 6x9 fit behind speaker grill i checked and my original speaker holes matched the old FE speaker studs perfectly,no mods required, just put it on studs and find 4 nuts the same thread and bobs your uncle.just wished id put some of the black cloth ive got in shed over it,"oh well "looks like under the dash i will have to go,to answer your Q Emu,no speakers down back as i did not want to cut holes in shelf, the great thing is due to speaker grill being in the centre it pushes the sound to front and back and sounds deep and clear using a good quality speaker also, you can only fit one 6x9 behind grill.

Thanks Nicko and Smithy.

I like your idea Smithy. I'm going shopping tomorrow. Did you get them at a car sound outlet? I like the idea of two speakers, even if they are close together, you can still get some stereophonic effects.

Be careful not to drive through puddles when you mount the speakers in the kick panels. ;D

hi matt, yeh i picked them up quite cheap around $50  i think,on special at a strathfield car radio just before christmas. the plus with the rotating tweeters is that i have angled them so the high end is directed towards the front seat occupants with the mid range filling the cabin. in theory it should work ;)

this with a couple of cheap 6x9's in the back and a sweet 6 up front is all the sound i need. ;D ;D

Jaycar also do a rotating tweeter speaker. www.jaycar.com.au
They have franchises in most states and their gear stands up well in the Car Audio mag's comparison tests. The benefit being that their prices are dirt cheap compared to the brand name gear.

Glad to see it works, I was thinking of doing the same but hinging from the bottom and using a magnetic catch or something.

gday guys
thanks for posting the pics brad
the system is a clarion deck & clarion 6stack cd changer mounted in dash behind speaker grill, with four 6 x 9 speakers. 2 in the front mounted in mdf boxes on kick panels then covered with speaker grills to keep period look(had to mount them upsidedown to fit ), and 2 mounted in rear panels of wagon, again covered by speaker grills. made rear panels with 3mm mdf for support but its a pig of a job because they have the curved end & have to be flexible & solid at the same time.   the whole thing cost $1200(i did speaker install). the hinges fit easy, i used 2 i had in the shed just as a trial fit 2&1/2 years ago. you need to butcher the grill - it has a bit that hooks into the glove box you need to hacksaw off.
emu,    the gauges are Pricol (supposed to be made by Smiths)bought from AutoOne in Perth. black face white pointer , chrome bezel to match speedo (no neon colour) volts, oil pressure, temp.  theyre on a generic hanger at the moment, (making a proper panel is on my TO DO list before Jindabyne
          surferboy 8) 8) 8)
ps   i can still use the glovebox for all my rock&roll cd's(& the beachboy ones of course)

this pic shows how surferboy has used radio grilles as speaker covers...and how they aren't in the way of his foot on the accelerator......and Emu, a bit of a better pic of the gauges....there wasn't quite enough light for my old camera at Tues' meeting.....
