Title: Twin Carbs & Auto Linkages - EK Post by: Mike Perth on May 10, 2004, 10:48:29 AM My EK is running its original Grey and Hyromatic with all the original linkages. I have obtained a set of Perry extractors and am looking to get a hold of and fit twin SU's when these go on. My problem/query is how does this effect the kickdown linkage on the hydromatic? Is it going to be in the way, how can the existing accelorator linkage be linked to the SU's and the kickdown linkage maintained. If anyone has done this and has pictures or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Any help would be great, especially if someone over here has a settup I can look at!
Title: Kickdown - do I need it? Post by: Mike Perth on May 18, 2004, 09:26:00 AM How does the kickdown linkage work, is it actually necesary, I noticed on an earlier post that you can have an auto without the kickdown mechanism. I am not sure that it actually works at the moment - how can I tell?

An auto tranny has a couple of inputs to tell it what gear to select and when, according to road speed, engine speed, manual selection and throttle position. The kickdown cable is linked to the throttle so that if you decide you want to flatted the pedal, then the transmission will drop down a gear to give you the torque you require. The transmission will work without a kickdown cable, but good luck overtaking things in a hurry ! Maybe someone out there knows better ?? or has an adaptor for the SUs? Also the transmission would change up through the gears really quickly from standing start (called short shifting) because another of the kickdown cables jobs is to provide input to the transmission on throttle position so that if you accelerate quickly it will hold gears for longer. I ran my 202/powerglide without kickdown linkage for a few weeks until I could mount the pin in the manifold for the linkage to hinge on....basically went to top gear straight away as it "senses" that you're not accelerating without the linkage....also, won't kick down for passing....you can manually do so with the lever though...... so, you probably will want to re-jig the linkage around the new carbies and extractors if you install them..... cheers....Brad |
