Title: Broken Axle Removal
Post by: Shayne on May 08, 2004, 05:34:26 PM
I have removed a broken right rear axle shaft from the FE sedan.  It has snapped about an inch from the end of the shaft, on the spline.  How do I get the remainder of the spline out?  Can I tap it through from the other end of the axle housing, or do I need to pull the diff out to ensure I get all the bits of steel? ???

In the parts manual, the axle shaft for FE-FC is different from other models, yet all the local 'experts' tell me that any old Holden shaft will fit.  Which is the case?  I can't find any old shafts lying around here unless I pull the one out of my FJ (which I think has an FB/EK rear end).

Is it possible to buy a new axle, or do I need to source a second hand one?

Lots of questions this morning, I look forward to hearing from you. :)

no you cant push it through from other end as the spider gear pin goes through centre of hole unless you had some strong (high tensile) thin rod that would fit past spider gear pin,but it would need to be about 7 foot long, but having siad that i would highly recomend that the centre is removed so you can clean any shards of broken shaft out ,there might have been a clean break but you are better safe than sorry .

Hi Shayne,
FE-FC axles are different to FB-EK ones!  ;)
From memory its something to do with the oil seal. ???
I have good 2nd hand FE-FC ones 4 sale if you can't get one locally.

Thanks Nicko & Ace,

I've pulled the diff out and will clean it up.  I've managed to get onto a full rear end in Toowoomba, so will get it freighted out Monday.  Will probably just pull an axle out & use the housing, diff etc already on the car.

I'll have to investigate now the best way of removing the broken spline from within the diff without pulling everything else apart!
::) :P

If you've got the diff centre out you can normally tap the broken bit of axle out with a hammer and a long punch.
