Title: replacement headlight bulbs??
Post by: fc4kiwi on April 18, 2004, 09:09:39 AM
just got rejected for a W.O.F over here in NZ (6 month check) for the headlights! >:(
Im still using the original bulbs (Lucas 42/36)
They have said that the output isn't bright enough on both low & high beam, they have said that I HAVE to update to more powerfull bulbs. ???
What have you guys overthere done to update?
What watt bulbs can I fit without having to change any of my wiring (just been rewired) and would I have to use a relay due to the fact of drawing more power with brighter bulbs.

Hi there,

I recently sold my EK wagon which was fitted with sealed beams. They worked a treat and were heaps better than my FB's standard set up. There were no modifications to run these lamps.

Cheers, Jason.

i never had a problem when using more modern globes with higher output in my FC's during the 80's ,also i think the newer globes actually draw less current whilst delivering brighter glow.

Unless your car is concourse restoration just change to sealed beam inserts, standard wiring and dipper switch quite capable of handling standard sealed beam units.
Another option is to up grade to H4 inserts and bulbs, would recommend fitting a relay if you go for anything over the 60 / 55W size bulb. The H4 bulbs are available up to 120 / 55W bulbs(Not legal for use on the road in Oz)

See your local auto sparky as they will be able to source higher wattage bulbs or supply the replacements inserts.

Good Luck
John M

PS. What does W.O.F actually stand for,or is it something rude
