Title: transmission coolers
Post by: fc4kiwi on April 16, 2004, 06:12:26 AM
hi guys
im in the process of putting trimatic into fc sedan
what i would like to know WHERE i can put the trans cooler.
NOTE: cant go in front of radiator due to the fact I have
electric fan mounted there.
size of cooler is 200mm X 150mm X 30mm thick X repco unit.
if the car isn't doing any towing would it be alright to place the cooler on the engine side of the radiator low down, or isn't this advisable ???
would like to know where other people have possition an aftermarkert cooler.
all help would be great ??? ???

G'day Kiwi
With the trimatics I have fitted to FJ, FE, FC and HR I mounted the coolers almost horizontally(about a 30 degree angle) behind the bumper/or lower front panel, same as the japanese do in some of their sports cars. I also mounted a protective grille in front of the cooler to avoid stone damage. These have all worked well and were roughly the same size as ypurs
Cheers
Jock

Why not next to the thermo fan, even if it's not in front of the radiator it should get lots of air flow?

Hi fc4kiwi,

I mounted mine on the driver's side radiator baffle, the panel alongside the radiator....using spacers to keep it about 1" away from the metal to allow some airflow....then drilled holes in the baffle for easy access of pipes etc.....works well, looks relatively neat...will take pic and post....

regards....Brad

Can ur trans overheat in traffic if not much air is pushed thru??

I have mine mounted in front of radiator but would prefer it to be elsewhere for a myriad of other reasons...

Cheers

Ed

Get a trans temp gauge if you are worried, modified trans get hotter quicker and need better cooling than the tank in the radiator. The guy who built my trans says the colder the better for transmissions, unlike motors.

If you notch the frame that supports the grill a bit you should be able to move the fan forward enough to fit the cooler between it and the radiator.

There is a cooler behind the fan.
