Title: Building the nest - Exhausting work.
Post by: Ed on March 30, 2004, 04:19:21 AM
Hi All.

Some progress shots of my almost complete headers.. what a pain these were... never again!

these fit between the subframe rails and block using a Holden V8.

the secondaries are tiny to allow them to slip out with the heads on. and starter removed.

The plugs are accesible, the starter can be removed without hassle, even the O2 sensor comes out with ease.

I would of finished them, but my oxy ran out of gas.. have to heat the collectors to finish them properly.

The engine bay is going to be painted once these are completed.

Cheers

Ed

PS  I probably should remove the heads to fit the motor up without scratching things.. but hey..

thats a nice set of pipes should sould sweet, alot of work goes into them,i did a set for a chev -eh , i hate it when they cut the inner guard so i also went for the beside the subframe look 8)
what sort of system you running after the headers, i went 2" to commodore V8 mufflers and for a V8 you need twins out the back ;D ;D ;D
good luck and hope to see future photos later ;)

Very nicely done Ed.
Looks like some pretty fine workmanship there.
Like you I'll be running the exhaust from my Aussie V8 inside the chassis rails. I'm going to have a shot at using the original manifolds off the VK commodore which appear to hug the engine fairly closely. Just hope I can still get a reasonable sound out the back.
cheers,
Leigh

HI fc4kiwi,

Currently there is a single 2.5 inch (or so) single system, which I will probably end up using initially, I have routed my fuel lines carefully  so dual pipes may be on the cards at a later date.  (With EFI) there are many more things to route under there away from heat, stones etc.. including where to place the surge tank!

Hi Leigh,

If you are using red motor heads I have a set of tri Y's I dont need anymore since changing to EFI heads, which were fabbed up for me and fit well provided you use the later model "mini starter"  i know where u can get these new for $189 (starter that is).

i tried commodore manifolds (on EFI heads) but the drivers side fouls the steering and the passenger side seems to go totally where u dont want it.

Altho I have seen the comm manifolds used on V8 into LJ swaps.

Cheers

Ed

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the offer of those pipes - I'm tempted. The sound I'm after is what came out the back of the early GTS's. Do you know if they ran extractors or headers or?  I'm a long way off that stage just yet as the old bus is still a daily driver. I'll be pulling it off the road in a month or so when the rego runs out and there is quite a lot of bodywork and rust repair to be done so it'll be a long project.
cheers,
Leigh

Hi LEigh,

I have no idea about the systems they used, extractors I would imagine but u never know.

thanks mick

:)

Fatboy,

no amount of money would ever make me part with these... umm almost no amount, because I have a deadline with the ever approaching Nats!

These pipes are $$$.. the pipes in kit form cost 500, the coating 300, and labour hours came in around 40 hours.  not bad if u consider I dont even work in the motor trade.

If I had to remake some it wouldnt take as long but the same motor in a different body would be slightly different.. not to mention a real PITA.

Best bet is to give it a go. (the price of fun doing conversions).

Jason (Fev6van), and Brad (FCV8UTE) told me the same advice and look what happened!

Cheers

Ed
