Title: DIFF HELP PLEASE ???/
Post by: Blown_FC on March 03, 2004, 01:03:06 AM
I've read most things re: diff conversions for my FC Sedan, and think I'll be going the VOLVO rear end so I can have discs.

But can someone please set me straight on a few things?

- WHAT MODEL VOLVO has the right diff for an FC ?
- Are they OLD HOLDEN STUD PATTERNS ?
- WHAT OTHER CHANGES DO I NEED TO MAKE ?
- Can you still get the VOLVO DISCS AND PADS ect ?

and  anything else that may help me, like brake line sizes, tail shaft lengths, and Uni joint yolks ect.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

You should contact Ben Wall from the NSW Club. Last time I spoke to him he was still looking to sell the correct Volvo diff for this conversion. I have sent you a PM with his number.

Cheers,

Craig.

they are shorter by about two inches from memory, yes they are old holden stud pattern and yes you can buy brake pads and parts readily, but no you will have to grind off all old brackets and weld on holden spring pads, engineering shop is best for welding as they will put it in a jig to stop warping, but and this is a big BUT some engineering places have been known to stuff up angle where pads sit in relation to diff centre so take old standard one in for them to copy and no not the one they are using for pads ,unless you can find a well renouned shop with no dickheads left to do job, also you will need a proportioning valve to suit your front end so rears dont lock up every time you brake,//the volvo diff looks very much like a 10 bolt centre only axles are bigger so is extremely strong diff and axles able to take lots of punishment but diff ratios are pretty high ,one i just sold was 4.11to1 so no good for hiway unless you can find better ratio diff,on the plus side volvo diffs are very cheap

When I looked into diff conversion to disc brake's. I wayed up all options and end going for a VN Commodore disc brake diff. Cost was not much more once you get it cut and pads welded on. I went to 14" wheels as I have HQ front brakes.
