Title: Engine loosing power Post by: graham_fuller on February 16, 2004, 06:33:24 AM Just replace the Carbi with a fully rebuilt unit.When I got the car Hot and put it under load the engine started to loose power.It is very hot at present that is air temperature.Dosent appear to be using water.could this be cuased by incorrect fuel mixture setting or am I looking more at head gasket trouble?

It could be a number of things. ;) Have you checked all the basics? Plugs,points,timing etc. A compression test or cylinder leakge test will tell you if you have a cylinder head or head gasket problem. Did the car have the problem before you put the rebuilt carby on? The problem wasn't there before the new carbi.I have just done some more drive testing and found the same problem in the cool.I can fix it by pulling out the choke then everything is sweet.any suggestions? It's most likely the main jet size. Pull the one out of your old carby (you'll need a special tool or a set of long nose pliers and some patience) and note the size - it's probably a number in the low 50's. Check the one in the new carby, its probably smaller causing the engine to starve for fuel under load. Cheers, Craig. I suggest you purchase or borrow a main jet removal tool as i have had to remove some that have been attacked with long nose pliers ;) If your motor is standard it should have either a .050 main jet with a no 66 power by-pass jet or a .051 with a no 67 power by-pass jet.
