Title: What price for alloy tappet covers for greys
Post by: peterwmh on October 01, 2003, 03:45:56 AM
I have been offered a finned alloy tappet cover to suit a grey motor.  But what would something like this be worth, it's in good nick.  It's made by Kleinig Sydney if that helps!

I'll try to get a photo.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter.
An average type alloy cover for a Grey usually fetches about $30 to $60 (If in good nick). If the Kleinig" is the one with a hole at both ends, I will give you $150.
Let me know.
Regards,
Rob J

Rob,
Do you have a pic of the Kleinig tappet cover?  I'm not sure where you mean the holes are.  I've got a couple, but they are WEY.
The inlet manifold on the wagon for twin SUs is Kleinig.
Do you know a bit about the history of the Co.?

Hi.
Kleinig was a performance workshop founded by the racer Frank Kleinig. He made a few goodies for the Grey motor. That isn't the cover I had hoped it was. I have a photo of the twin breather cap cover somewhere. I am a bit of a dumbarse when it comes to posting stuff, so I might just email it to you.

When your checking out the alloy rocker covers, remember you will have to add the cost of polishing it if you want it to look half decent and "shiny".

Re Klienig, I have this unusual single carb adapter made by Klienig that fits a V8 Ford card to a grey inlet manifold
An old mechanic friend I know reckons they used to try them when they were racing the greys

Hi.
As for polishing. I got a $5 buff pad to fit my drill & a bit of white compound for polishing alloy & 30 minutes later, a cover was shining like a mirror. 1 hour later, my New Norman was spik & span. Easy. You polish, wipe it off with metho or thinners, then polish a bit more.
Worth the effort.

Ahh Mr 4 Hammers.  I got one, bloke over the road gave it to me years ago, after he polished it up.  Hot looking rocker cover - that's for sure.  When I fitted it, I masked off the fins and painted the valleys red.

BTW, not for sale.

Hi.
If you look REAL close at the picture Craig A posted for me (Thanks again, Craig), you will note that the motor also has the set of "Kleinig" extractors on it. I have never seen a set myself, but have heard they were alloy. That would explain why they polished up so nicely. Problem was, that is they got REAL hot, they warped & sometimes melted. That is all I know about them. May be why they are now so rare.
