This one is a bit of an odd question.

When dress rings are fitted, most hubcap tools tend to "bottom out" on the dress rim before they get enough leverage to pop the hubcap. This means the dress ring has to come off first, then the hubcap (in order to prevent denting the dress ring). According to the old boy, there was a "bent" hubcap remover available (maybe NASCO, probably aftermarket) that would allow the hubcap to be levered off without removing the dress ring. It wa available around the EH era.

Does this ring bells with anyone? I've tried googling, but cannot find anything. Would love to buy or make one, as the old  boy's EH Prem project is now underway.

There was a wheel brace ages ago that had a bent hook on one arm to remove the hubcap, a rubber buffer on another and the socket on the third while the opposite end was plain so you could spin the brace.

The 4-leg "rubber bumper on one end" wheel brace is what I grew up with. Have tried it on Grace's ute, but can't get the correct angle to avoid the dress ring.

Looks like 7406866 is what I am after. I'll send Mal a PM, and cruise over to take some measurements. I reckon I can bend up some round bar to suit.

Harv - I use this. It operates like a slide hammer and there is no need to remove the dress rim. It would be fairly easy to make one up.

I made a slide hammer one similar to the one described.  Works a treat.  Just need wheel trims now

Bit late to reply but...  I have found these (or something similar) in VC and VE Valiants at wreckers.  Just keep your eyes open.

Keith ,trim rings that fit our wheels well ,F##d cortina 1600e.or escort mk 2 ,and no they do not have that name on them ,have a set on my car and in 10 years nobody has queried their origin . ;) cheers Steve .

I have those dress rings on mine too Keith. Believe they were off a 78 TD Cortina.
They look correct.

(... and yes, that is an EH hubcap. Mal's EH is a beautiful survivor).

So does the lower flat plate rest against the tyre, rather than the rim, when you’re hooking the hubcap off?

Yes, the little hook goes under the hubcap, and the flat plate rests against the tyre. Unfortunately I didn't get any dimensions when I visited Mal.
