Also inner brace was cut out so I could planish the weld afterwards and original brace is used cut one inch wider. That way my joins weren't all in the same place. It allowed me to improve the flow of the rear windscreen and made the radius(or crown) of the roof where the join was line up almost perfectly. But back to the guards :) The bottom of guard had a ordinary repair back in the day so that join had to go. I planned to add a filler strip to get rid of it plus fill the void of the wheel arch. The 3rd pic shows the penetration on the backside. Minimal planishing will be needed. I usually planish before sanding the weld but it hardly needed it so I got carried away. I probably won't do it this way again, but you have to experiment to learn. Last photo is not planished yet. I've also rolled the headlights forward 1 1/4inches.it happened by accident. I only had one screw in the bottom of the headlight rim and it fell forward over a few weeks. I noticed it looked meaner like that. So that's how this happened. I've always thought that peak on top had to be longer so I smashed it in on the grass with hammer and bolster chisel. (old school) haha. I couldn't afford a sandbag at the time ,so I used nature one. None of the guard is really concluded yet. I like to get the mods close so I can get a good visual on the whole flow of the car, before finishing just in case I don't like it. Then I haven't wasted a whole lot of time. I noticed in earlier pics there was some tape running from the windscreen towards the back - did you slice along there to push the roof gutter out and then add a filler patch? So pushing out the front of the roof to line up with the rear I thought would take some of that bulbous roof out. Tig for everything else.my tig, I can stick weld with if I need to make a table or something. I really have no need for a mig at home.
I have 14000 dollar migs at work. I don't find a need to bring one home much. My thoughts are if you're building a car buy a cheap tig and learn to use it. Instead of a cheap mig. That's just my opinion. Why risk it. It's normally about 1.5 steel. But I'm upping it to 2 mm. I'll just make sure everything is true and square when it goes back on. Your eye is the best judge when replacing panels like this. I had a long think about bracing it. These cars were never even left to right from factory. Most old cars I've worked on are usually half inch out at least left to right. I would have thought some bracing would have been required when removing the quarter panel. These bodies were made in a jig in the factory to ensure trueness. Sills will probably come off to check for more.this is the worst rust ive found in the whole car so far.pretty lucky i think.easy fix. Contemplating welding some rhs into the sill to strengthen the chassis aswell.i 've been thinking of cutting off the sills to do this anyway.
