Title: Valve Order Post by: Ken's 57 on February 11, 2018, 12:25:36 PM Can someone please confirm I've got the correct order of the valves beginning at the front cylinder?
My observations are: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Ex I, I Ex Ex I, I Ex, Ex I, I Ex Sorry, I know this is basic stuff but..... I need to know I'm right. Also, does anyone know what cleans off Permatex #2 non-hardening gasket sealer? I've tried petrol and iso propyl alcohol to remove from the rocker cover but no luck. Cheers, Ken :) Title: Re: Valve Order Post by: Ken's 57 on February 11, 2018, 05:30:08 PM Sorry....I wasn't real clear in my first post. Doing the tappets and just want to be sure I know which is exhaust and which is inlet. :)

Just out of interest, would tappet clearance be smaller or larger when the engine is cold? I always assumed the clearance would be greater when cold but was told recently the gap widens as the engine heats up. Cheers, Ken ??? Title: Re: Valve Order Post by: hsv-001 on February 13, 2018, 09:36:21 AM I have never really thought about it ,but I always use less clearance than spec as I believe oils have improved . I guess engine block would expand but so would lifters ,push rods ,rockers and towers so I don't think there would be much in it . I would gap at around 6 & 8 and listen for rattles and or exhaust popping and any rough idle .

Title: Re: Valve Order Post by: Ken's 57 on February 14, 2018, 07:48:55 PM Did the tappets on the weekend. Can't believe the improvement. Smoother idle and better engine performance. I have never bothered too much with them before but will make this a regular part of the maintenance from now on. Gave up trying to adjust them with the engine running but did take a preliminary reading as it idled. The engine was hot and I simply switched off to adjust them one at a time, making sure I kept it at operating temperature. Had a mate to help which made it easier but it took quite a few goes to get some of them right. And as I was told, the clearance increases as the engine heats up. On average about 5 thou.
Cheers, Ken ;) Title: Re: Valve Order Post by: hsv-001 on February 15, 2018, 08:53:38 AM Cool to know that I have been correct to gap them closer than spec. all these years . Thanks.
