Hey everyone 👋🏻
I thought I'd start a thread and introduce myself.
I have been a freestyle motocross rider my whole life and was riding at a professional level over the last 7 years.

 In July last year I crashed a backflip and had a near-life ending accident resulting in a traumatic brain injury. After months in hospital and rehab (and still attending outpatient rehab 3 days a week now) I have sold my bikes and given up riding. I'm extremely lucky and grateful to be alive and making a recovery, so the second chance at life is a blessing.

Attending a few car cruises has since inspired me to take up a new hobbie, and thankfully my Grandpa has been holding onto his car for many years with hopes that a grandson would become keen to restore it.

So enter his 1957 FE Holden.
I'm super excited about this and can't wait to tackle the new project.

via eBay and from a Holden wrecking yard (thanks to a lady friend ;) and hope to get it on a trailer and take home soon. It is all a bit more time consuming ATM due to no drivers license thanks to the brain injury.

Anyway, here's a few photos. I'll keep updating this as I go and will certainly be in need of advice as I go too.

 Since you are new to the scene you may want to check out the SA FE FC club annual show and shine on the 26th of March. Fixing these cars and obtaining parts is all about networking and shared knowledge. Come down for a look and a chat. It's never a better time to catch a bunch of these cars together in SA. Also the SA club Facebook page is worth a look for upcoming events. The forum is best for technical data though. Use the search function and you'll a treasure trove of info.

Hey everyone, I'm happy to say that I was able to take my baby home on the weekend!
Thursday meant my friend and I put some railway sleepers underneath and dragged it back a meter so I could reach the front left wheel and put on, then we were able to drag it outside.
It's first time seeing the sun after 50 years of barn life!

Sunday I hired a car trailer and my brother drove out to the farm to pick it up. We winched her up, took some photos then took her home for a bath, and then placed in my shed where I will spend many hours getting her back to her former glory!

Hey guys, I spent the afternoon cleaning up the interior and giving the windows a bit of a scrub.

It was cool cleaning out the glove box and pulling out some cool random things from the 50's.

The interior is in really good condition, so that was nice to see it after a bit of a tidy up.

Great pictures Adam. Have a look at my FE wagon on Sunday as it is the same colour interior, Summit Blue and Cosmos Grey.
Make sure you bring with you the firewall ID plate numbers, the chassis number and the engine number if you can.

Hey guys. Well it's been a busy couple months and I haven't gotten too far yet, I have given her a pretty good bath however and began pulling apart the steering draglink assembly late last week, giving one door a bit of a scrub and bringing  the original color out was fun and my mates have given the chrome parts a polish. All the essential stuff ha ha. More to come soon!

Another great story in the making and thanks for sharing it with us!

When you remove the floor mats get afew extra pairs of hands to help. If it is still in half reasonable nick appearance wise it is likely to be very fragile now if not handled with care.

I got a bit sidetracked last night and pulled the back seat out, climbed through the boot and opened the boot for its first time seeing light in 40 years. Rats & possums have had a nice home over the years so I am in process of cleaning that out at the moment.

There is a whole lot of history behind this sign so it's something special just like I'm realizing about this whole project

Exciting times tonight.. we hooked up a battery (finally) and tried a few things out

Turns out I can't load any videos here but, headlights work, indicators and it turned over for the first time in 45 years.
We put a bit of fuel in the carby and with clean spark plugs we got the beast to life! I'm so excited about tonight's efforts woohoo!

Howdy peeps, it's been a while between updates! I have pulled the diff apart to replace a broken axle on one side, pressed on some new bearings and painted her all up, finally got it all back together today in the chilly 39 degrees.

Danger Will Robinson! Danger!

You have put your brake backing plates on reversed: left on right side and vice-versa.
The axle shafts will have to come out again.

The handbrake cable enters the brake below the rear axle, and the round hole for the wheel cylinder has to be at the top.

That's much better. Just check the amount of thread protruding doesn't foul the brake shoe. Hard to see the length in the picture. Factory had the bolts inserted the other way round.

That's a lot of U-bolt you have sticking out from the lower spring mounting plate.  Are the U-bolts replacements?  It might be an idea to cut them off just below the nuts (and I'm hoping you have a nut and a locknut at each corner).

Yes, you can't go wrong with the support here. I agree with your comment about delays between dismantling & re-assembly too.

The hammer was the closest at the time (in my work van) I'll get a proper one asap!

U bolts are certainly replacements and I do plan on cutting them off after I get hold of some bolts to act at lock nuts.

Ken: I'm guessing you're referring to the bolts on the handbrake assembly?? I'll turn them around if they are in the way.

**Another question**

I was about to put the brake shoes back on but they are original, which have asbestos in them correct?? They still have plenty of tread on them but would you recommend I get new ones and avoid giving the old ones any more use?

If your brake linings are riveted onto the shoes, there's a good chance they'll contain asbestos.
But then - my FX, which is pretty much my daily drive, still has riveted brake linings.

As long as your old linings aren't soaked in brake fluid, then I reckon you'd be fine re-using them.  It's not like you're going to be driving the car a lot.

If you're really concerned about asbestos dust, don't use compressed air to blow out brake dust.  Wash the shoes in water, then leave outside to dry.  And if you need to give the linings a light touch with sandpaper to get rid of rust and dirt, do so outside.  Don't breathe the dust.

All is not lost.  Get an old saucepan, and about half a cup of (front-loader) laundry powder or dishwasher detergent.  Put the brake shoe in the saucepan, cover with water, add the powder, bring to the boil.  Bubble it up for half an hour or so, then rinse well with water and let dry.
If it's a rear brake shoe that's been fluid-soaked, you'll have no trouble at all.  If it's a front, particularly the primary shoe (that's the one with the two links), it may be a bit grabby for a while before it settles down.

Pulled the water pump off this evening.. unfortunately the radiator never got drained so there’s a heap of rust.

I want to flush this out before fitting the new water pump, any tips on how I do this?
I’ll get more pics tomorrow.

When I got my old FC van back in the 80's it had been parked for decades [only 20k on the clock] ,and when I started to pull the old motor out I noticed the toe of a women's stocking clamped between the top hose and the radiator inlet. In amongst all the rust scale was the remnants of one of those old blue [copper sulphate I think] bombs in the gauze pouch that women would use to get washing white . If it were me I would put an old pump on there and use something like Barrs Buff in the water and run the engine for a few minutes and then put the garden hose in the bottom radiator hose and a few extra hoses on the top to divert the water away from the car and start and run the car until the water runs clean.
   

Gurney is a good start. Then put the old pump back on and plug the outlet. There is an acid solution you can get at most parts outlets that will dissolve the scale and rust. Flush with the gurney again. Fit a radiator sock filter in the bottom hose to collect loose bits that will continue to appear and run an anti rust coolant additive.

Or if you want to go to a huge amount of effort, pull the motor out of the car, take the gearbox and flywheel off, remove the welch plugs at the rear (1), left (3), right (2, inside the pushrod cover) of the block and get stuck in with a Gerni.

I'm only half-joking.  The welch plug at the back of the block is usually the first one to rust through, and it's a nightmare to replace with the motor in the car.

And since you've got the motor out of the car, it's an ideal time to check for badly seating valves.  And then you can do a really good job of cleaning the scale out of the block with the head off, if the head needs a service.

And then, because the motor's out of the car and the head's off, you'd do it a great favour by giving it a hone and rings and bearings.  And a replacement timing gear too.

See how easily things get out of hand?  I speak from experience here . . .

I've certainly had a while away from this forum and I've got plenty to share of where my car is at. We've come a long way so ill start from the start..
After plenty of advice this has turned into a nut & bolt restoration.. first step was motor out thanks to help from my friend Vic.
Then a big clean up thanks to my jetter.

It's safe to say it got out of hand like you said.. we pulled the motor out, gave it a hone, 2 cylinders were cracked and had to get re- sleeved.

I just noticed - the absence of ribs on the crankcase left hand side says to me that you have an FX-FJ motor.  Does the engine number have a letter prefix, or is it all numerals?

Not too many surprises rust and filler wise dawg, that’s good. You saved yourself some work getting it dipped. 2k etch I suppose? What sort of cost if it’s not too rude?

Overall the condition was pretty good, the floor plans had a few holes and a few more than i expected but not nearly as bad as what it could have been. The dip process costed me a couple arms and legs. Around $4800. Glad I've been saving for years. I remember. Great to see it here again with your grandparents.

Those holes in the roof are the sunvisor bracket holes. If you are going to put one back on, make sure you reinforce those spots. Inserting nutserts seems to be a good way of doing it but still needs reinforcing. refer to pictures of Surferboys roof.

July update! The body returned to the painters a week ago, now sporting 2k primers. I have sourced 2 x front mudguards and they are currently going through the dipping process, trying to catch up to the body! Good news everyone! The FE has made it back home a few weeks ago 👍🏼 we got the front & rear end on and got it rolling enough to get on a trailer and back home.
For now I've had surgery on my shoulder so I'm couch ridden by for a while and we will get stuck into it in the new year.

Howdy all, hope you're all well.

Dear me it's been a while since the last update.
Since my shoulder reconstruction in December I've returned to work and of course things have been really busy since.

So we've been busy with the car (mainly Vic 😂) but everything is back together including Pingjin sound deadener, a cheeky head unit, some speakers. It made its maiden voyage to the upholsterer around the corner a couple days ago for hood lining then onto the next. We're close!

Wow looking amazing ..  great work.

The car looks great , huge satisfaction for you , congratulations , I went into my tyre guys a while ago , and they brought out some Rema Tip Top ( they make tubeless tyre valves and stuff ) tyre cleaner and cleaned my white walls , just brilliant , you cant buy it , they are going to decant some into a spray bottle for me from their bulk stock ..Vern ..
