The 1956 FEs had a slightly longer open ended retainer which apparently allowed the diff to slide about too much. It was changed in April 1957. The rubber insulator was also changed to suit the new retainer, and the repro rubber suits the later retainer. So you shouldn't fit a new repro rubber to the old plate. The plates can be hammered back into shape and cracks welded up. If the plates are really destroyed then finding another better set from a wreck should be a solution. I doubt you will find a perfect set out of a car any more. From memory, generally the bottom half is better than the top half so you can usually make one good set from two sets. Ken |
