Title: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: Geoff_K on July 24, 2003, 10:15:15 AM I would like to know the approximate weight of the Sedan Body Shell.
That is shell only: NO: engine; gearbox; rear axle and springs; front cross member; doors; bonnet; boot lid; petrol tank; dash & steering column, pedals ; seats & trim; bumpers & chrome; wiring; AND, front & rear glass. Thanks Geoff_K Title: Re: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: craiga on July 24, 2003, 09:39:20 PM Hi Geoff,
I reckon you need to take the approximate weight of each item off the known Wagon weight and you'll be left with an approximate weight of the bare shell. engine; 150kgs gearbox; 50kgs rear axle 80kgs front cross member 30kgs doors; 80kgs total bonnet; 10kgs boot lid; 10 kgs petrol tank; 5 kgs dash & steering column, 10kgs pedals ; 5kgs seats & trim; 40kgs bumpers & chrome; 20kgs wiring; 5kgs front & rear glass. 10kgs other sundries (radiator, battery, etc etc) 100kgs less a little bit for that scourge of the old Holden, rust...... So my ROUGH estmate would be that the shell is around 400 - 500 kgs. maybe a little bit less? Any other takers on this one!!! Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: slim on July 24, 2003, 11:36:54 PM I would estimate about 350 Maximum, for a bare shell . And I rolled one over by myself yesterday . Any one got a BIG set of Scales . ;D ;D ;D ;D

Don't ask.... cheers RET Title: Re: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: Geoff_K on July 25, 2003, 10:31:14 AM Thanks guys,
I have put these weights into a list and using the Shop Manual referenced Totals: -------------------- Weights for Car at 1076kg:1078kg Engine complete with Gear Box 194kg -------------------- Adding Craig and Slims numbers plus a few factors of my own. Engine 168 Gearbox 26 Rear Axle 80 Front Cross Member 50 Doors (4x20) 80 Bonnet 10 Boot Lid 10 Petrol tank 5 Dash & Steering column, drag links 15 Pedals & hydraulic cylinders 5 Seats 40 Bumpers & chrome 20 Wiring 5 Front and Rear Glass 10 other sundries (radiator, battery, exhaust, etc etc) 120 Wheels & Tyres 50 Liquids 10 Estimated Body Shell 374 Total Weight 1078 Assumming these are the weights, how much more is taken off the Body Shell weight of (825lbs<>374kgs) by removing front guards and front sub-frame assembly. Being a 70kg weakling I am trying to work out the size/capacity of frame/hoist etc. that is required to move/lift bare shell for repair/rebuild. For my sake I hope the weight suggested by Slim is closer than the number tendered by Craig. cheers, Geoff_K. Title: Re: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: Rabbitoh on October 29, 2022, 12:41:11 PM Sorry for resurrecting such an ancient topic, but the question remains, what is the combined weight of the two front guards and the front subframe so that we may finally know the ‘correct weight’ of a bare Sedan body shell (in the process of selling one at the moment and a prospective ‘buyer’ is asking.) ???
Title: Re: Weight of FE FC Body Shell Post by: Errol62 on October 29, 2022, 03:55:28 PM A guard would be about 8 kg and the sub frame what 34kg?
On the basis of all the assumed inputs you can really only say within 100kg. But I doubt it would be any more than 300kg, a bare shell. Front guard, complete with headlight, surround and indicator housing: 12 kg. Front subframe: 34 kg. Clay's right on the money. And no, I'm not going to put the body shell on the scales, but somewhere between 250 and 300 kg would not be wide of the mark. That’s probably as close a figure as anyone is ever going to come up with.

Rob The amount of metal that was missing from that body shell of yours, I reckon it would have weighed 150 kg tops! ;D ;D ;D |
