Title: bonnet repaint
Post by: GMHwagoon on May 20, 2015, 06:32:05 PM

picked up a fc bonnet which had been bare metal prepped
etched primed and had a couple coats of acrylic primer
primer has been on for a couple of months and stored dry
question is what needs to be done to surface so l can repaint in two pak primer  ready for 2pak paint

Out with the board file Greg, give it a good rub, make sure high and low spots are fixed and then hit it with lots of 2 pak primer/putty.

Well, that's what I did anyway and it came up good.

Cheers, Graeme

I'm with Graeme, spray a black guide coat over it and block it back until you get a smooth surface. Then 2 pak and do the same again, good prep work is the key too a great result.

so its alright to paint 2pak primer over acrylic primer as long as its rubbed back a little
was going to 2pak primer, fix dents then prime again  then high fill ,block back again

was told because the acrylic primer is softer and the 2pak harder the acrylic  will move  under  2pak primer
  and cause problems

do l have to remove all acrylic primer before 2pak  or is the acrylic a good enough base to start from

    thanks greg

Give it a really good going over with the board file Greg, then 2 pack primer/putty over the top and file again.  Have had no trouble at all with mine at all and it was similar to yours - acrylic primer/putty.

As there are only a couple of coats of Acrylic primer on it , I would get a pair of rubber gloves a scourer soaked in thinners and mop it off only  half  hours work and then you have a more stable base ........FC427......
