Title: Window Winders
Post by: JOX515 on November 23, 2014, 10:02:32 AM
Morning all,

My front left window winder winds back on itself, like it is spring loaded.  Is this repairable????

Cheers, Graeme

The winder is a direct shaft from handle to the gear, so the only thing I can think of would be the spring behind the door trim may have snapped and lodged in the winder.

Graeme,

Between the splined shaft (where the handle attaches) and the pinion is a clutch arrangement with a coil spring which provides about a third of a turn free play, and which pre-loads the pinion so it can't turn by either the weight of the window glass or the torque of the assist spring on the lift arm.

What's happened in your case is that the coil spring's broken, and there's no longer any pre-load.

Go back a few threads to "window regulators" - about two years back now, and you'll see my "how-to" on converting window regulators.  One thing I didn't cover in it was the disassembly and repair of this clutch thing.

The clutch assembly is held in place with three rivets.  Drill them out and you'll be able to pull the assembly to bits; then it's best to raid a spare rear window regulator for the splined shaft, pinion, spring, and housing.

G'day Jim,  I checked that out as soon as I came home from work but no joy.  I am guessing with my luck it is busted.

G'day Rob, After checking Jim's suggestion, yours will be the right answer.  Now that you mention your old post, I do remember reading it.  I will re-read it tonite and see what I come up with.  I have a couple of spare rear winders and they look the same (apart from the shorter arm) so will get the bits I need from one them.

Cheers and thanks for you help guys.

G'day Greg,

That would be a bonus - save destroying 2 to maybe make one.....  No more giveaways tho, if you have a spare I will certainly BUY it.

Cheers, Graeme
