Title: magneto pics
Post by: Gary C on September 14, 2014, 09:31:03 AM
I have scored a magneto for my fe race car but my eligibility officer wants me to provide photographic evidence that magnetos were used in early holdens appendix J (group Na-Nb) in the day before I can fit it.

If anybody can help with some pics it would be much appreciated, in the meantime I will also keep searching.

Thanks,Gary.

Gary,

Have you tried Ellis over with the lumpy humpy Na/Nb crowd?

The other option would be Ray Bell, over on the Motorsport forum:

Is it a Scintilla, or a WICO-X? Got some background info on both if you want it, will trade for those Norman photos  ;D :D

Cheers,
Harv

Hmmm... not looking good.

Group Na (pre-1958) indicates that electronic or transistorised systems are not permitted. A distributor of a different make but similar design is permitted, but must use the points and condenser components within. Group Nb (pre-1965) indicates that the ignition may be of the same type, but not necessarily brand as supplied by the manufacturer for the make
and model concerned. Contact breaker points and condenser may be removed and their standard operations performed by electronic components providing the following conditions are adhered to:
(i) all components, save for the coil, shall be an integral part of the distributor
(ii) a maximum of two wires shall connect the low tension side of the distributor to the coil. These wires shall
be visibly continuous and not contain any supplementary connection to any other component. Permitted
is the fitment of an uninsulated earthing conductor between distributor body and cylinder block
(iii) Ignition advance shall be restricted to mechanical actuation within the distributor.

The original FIA Appendix J rules (1961 are here: http://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/regulation/file/Appendix%20J%20-%201961%20ANG.pdf) indicate that ignition  coil, condensor and distributor are free, on condition the ignition system remains as provided by the manufacturer for the considered model. A spare coil and/or a spare condenser may be set up anywhere provided the switching from main to spare cannot be controlled from the inside of the car. The replacement of an automatic control of the ignition by a hand control (or vice versa) is authorised.

Cheers,
Harv

Thanks for the info Harv I have spoken with Ellis by email and he has a wealth of info as you suggested.

Best I could do for a while with the supercharger in question.

The magneto is a Wico X, it has been advertised around the traps before and I think you have used a pic of the box in another post.
It was new old stock.

Thanks, Gary

Thanks Gary.

Doesn't look like a Marshall-Nordec (Godfrey cabin blower), Shorrock, Wade or Judson. Could be a Wray, but I'll need to phone-a-friend to find out (Wray info is very thin on the ground... I know a bloke who was there when they were being cast though  ;D). I'll also touch base with the Yoorupeeuhn Judson guys... one of them has a real penchant for wierd and wonderful blowers like SCOTs. Will let you know what I find.

I've got some info on the Wico-X - PM me an email address and I'll send it through.

Cheers,
Harv
