Title: Where do these bits go
Post by: KFH on August 21, 2014, 02:52:50 PM
Doing some cleaning a while back I came across these two bits in a box that I stored small marked plastic bags with bits in while I was doing my restoration.  I suspect they may be from the back wheel area.  I did not appear to be missing anything when assembling the car.  The head dia is approx 10 mm and length 15 mm.  There is a flat on one side of the boss.  Can anybody assist with identification.

Rear bumper maybe, perhaps the bolts at each corner.....

My guess too. Look just like the ones I was missing last year. Hard to find some that are not rusted so much that they break when you remove them.

Nah.....
If the head diameter is about 10mm (3/8"), the thread size couldn't be more than 6mm (1/4")
Too small for bumpers.

Definitely not bumper bars.  The head is flat and about 1/16 inch thick.  They are quite small.

It would be a little small, yes. Beats me then, that's all I could find with a round head & square neck that was even close.
Something internal? Taxi rail or some other accessory?

The licence plate mounting bracket has slotted holes that could be right shape & size for these bolts.

I don't think the number plate would have been fixed with these bolts. The number plate holder is attached with slotted dome head screws into a captive nut in the chrome surround. The license plate lamp holder could be attached with this size bolt, but I think the square shank would make it hard to do up tight.
Don't you just hate leftover bolts.  ???

How about the rear exhaust hanger in the boot?

I'm with Graham on this one.  If it's the bolt for the exhaust hanger, then it'll have a 5/16" thread.

They look a bit like the bolts that insert into the rubber bump stops then bolt onto the bumperetts of a ute or van?

Further information on the part.  Thread diameter is 5/32".  Shank diameter is 7/16". Depth of UN-threaded part of shank 3/8" with two flats on opposite sides of it.  Length of thread 5/16" and appears to be UNF.

Thanks for the replies to date however none of them seem to fit the bill.  It is NOT a trick question and I do not know the answer.  I am 99% sure the pair came out of my FC as all the parts were put in the same collection area.  The only mechanical I worked on would be old Australian valve radios and they have parts like that in them.

PS.  No prizes for the correct guess.

Keith,

Too small to be the rear exhaust hanger bolts, so . . .
Aren't these the bolts for attaching the vent to its hinges under the cowl panel?

Hi Keith,
I may be wrong (again) but could they be out of the clips that hold chrome strips on?
I'm not sure if they can be easily removed or reattached to the clips, but they are the only screws/bolts I can find on my FC around that size.
If you're like me, and had to replace some knackered clips, I might try to retain the screws (just in case).
Cheers,
Gaz

I vote for the Radio,
All the bolts in the parts books The Round Head carriage bolts are all 5/16"

The Round Head bolts are either slotted or cross recess head

And the same with the cowl vent should be Truss Head No. 10 - 32 x 3/8" cross recess.

G'day Keith,
The measurements you have given us don't tally up even remotely with the picture. (not having a go at you  :D)
Get your vernier out and have another go.
Cheers,
Gaz

Hi Gaz.  I used a ruler and my calibrated eye to make the measurements.  Maybe the angle At which I took the photo may cause some distortion to apparent measurements.  I am away from home at the moment and will use the vernier when I get back home in the middle of the week.  So far no answers seem to fit the bill.  It is annoying when you have these bits left and did not find a spot for them during assembly.  Definitely not a radio as in my 50 + years of working with them I have never seen a mechanical part like this.

That's called a PARALLAX effect.
Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines.

I'm with Sheriff. Yeah, bolt in the spare wheel well for the exhaust hanger with the stock tail pipe, but there is only one there. Been soo long since I broke down mine...

Most bolts that are being mentioned eg; ute tailgate bump stop, exhaust hangers have a square head like the bumper bolts not slotted like the ones pictured.

OK to make sure I didn't give the wrong measurements  here are what my digital vernier gives me.  I'll give them in imperial and metric.

Overall length -----------------    .60" - 15mm
Head diameter -----------------   .49"  - 12.4mm
Head thickness -----------------  .06"  - 1.6mm   The head is domed
Shank length from under head --- .19"  -  4.8mm
Diameter of shank---------------- .227"  - 5.7mm
Across the flats on shank -------- .170"  - 4.27mm
Length of thread -----------------.35"  - 8.4mm
Diameter of thread --------------  .147"  - 3.57mm

So far the answers do not seem to be correct.  As I previously said this is not a trick question.

I think its something inside the door or qtr window etc but not a genuine one. But it doesn't look very used in the pick where it locates.
