Thanks Pete and Fatboy, I think the headlight switch is the problem but won't get to check it out till the weekend.

All is good, isolated the problem to a short in 1 headlight.I first checked the dip switch and all was ok.The light bulb in my thick head finally clicked on when I read the workshop manual which described what happens when you have a short in a headlight!

There is a thermal fuse acting sort of like a relay-it works so quick that I didn't realise what was happening until I really, really concentrated on listening for it.

The bakelight insulator between the spring loaded contacts for the headlght bulb had broken!

Took a couple of hours to fix because I have to remove the wheels to unscrew headlight buckets from the frenched guards.Anyway it allowed me to align the headlights properly as well.

2 birds killed with 1 stone.

Note to self look at workshop manual first.
