Title: Brake shoes and linings
Post by: RichFC on December 16, 2013, 09:18:37 AM
After 2 months of Dad passing away i finally decided to start my cars up and give then a run.
Unfortunately the FC front brake linings let go, I had planned to change them but they beat me to it.
They did have a fair amount of meat on them but had been sitting for quite some time.
I took the front wheels off and had a look and found the bonding had let go.
Crushed up brake linings jammed inside the drums,i cleared them out but the leading shoe on the drivers side appears to be a little buckled.
Im not sure if it can be straightened or not.
Couple of questions,
1.Are the front and rear shoes,Linings and drums the same ?
2. Should i bother repairing the shoe OR replace it?
3. Would anyone have some standard spare front shoes?

My local brake joint exchanged mine on the spot.

Thank you very much guys,
I was quoted $65 for set of new front shoes and linings and $35 each for maching drums.
They need to exchange mine, but one is slightly damaged and my question was, are the drums, shoes and linings the same for front and back?
I bought some rear brake drums, shoes and linings from a swap meet a little while ago for $5,they are in decent shape and i was hoping to exchange these for my new ones if they are the same as the front.
I need Dad back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Love you Dad !!!!!!!

Richard,

Front and rear shoes do interchange, but you need to remove the handbrake link from the secondary shoe of a rear brake before you use it on the front.

But there are subtle design changes in the shoes from FX to FC, mostly to do with the handbrake link.  Compare your old and new brake shoes carefully.  The most important thing is to check that the hole for the retractor spring is in the same place.

And if your front drums are not scored inside, I don't think you need to get them machined.  Unless the car used to stop with a jerky back-and-forth feel, in which case machining is a good idea.

And make sure the shoes are the right way around primary and secondary.
