Title: Grey Gearbox Syncro fix? Post by: Trevor_B on August 07, 2013, 05:42:52 PM Does anyone know if there has been an issue with syncro ring retaining circlips?
I am rebuilding a spare box and found both syncro ring retaining circlips have been welded in place - I assume to stop them from being pushed out by the sycnro ring? (http://members.optusnet.com.au/blackct/syncro1.jpg) (http://members.optusnet.com.au/blackct/syncro2.jpg) Was a real pain to remove and the resulting damage to the long gear unit that houses the syncros was terminal >:( Lucky I have a spare. The easy way is to give them a touch with the mig/stick at a few points around the ring. This tends to cause big changes in the temper of the ring, leading to localised cracking and failure. My one was brazed I think as the weld metal was brassy looking. I checked your gearbox guide Harv (which is very comprehensive :) ) but didn't see any references to welding but it sure looks like the FX/FJ guys are right into it. Thanks for the replies.
