Title: Cylinder head manufacture numbers
Post by: fe350chev on June 09, 2013, 05:16:12 PM
Can someone let me know if you can tell when a head was made or what model by its number. I know B designated numbers were for EJ blocks, but was wondering if anyone would know  what a number: 7409457 head would have come off or whether its an FC head on the EJ block.

It's easiest to just use the casting date eg L232 is deciphered as follows
L = December
23 = 23rd day of the month
2 = year- this could be 1952 or 1962 depending on the number of water outlets.

More numbers for you ken. I cleaned the block and the inside numbers are a21, b20, c24. It has b192 on side of the block. Didn't the EJ come out in July 1962?

I suppose the engines were cast and they the production process may have taken a bit to get going?doesnt b192 indicate it was 19 feb 1962?

Why is the head red in colour?

Yes you seem to have it all figured now, the B blocks were for FB and EK model so your dating is right
