Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: GMB-58FC on August 18, 2012, 02:14:35 PM Waynos,
first things first, the hardener for 2k contains isocyanate, which is extremely toxic so that rules out spraying in your carport for your health and everyone else. 2K should only EVER be sprayed in a full ventilated booth with sufficient extraction. You can spray over top of your original paint but again its not recommended due to the solvent/thinners in the new paint reacting with the old paint and can cause blistering/peeling. I've always increased pressure when spraying 2k as (normal acrylic & most paints around 60psi) but due to the higher viscosity of 2k it needs to be higher to ensure complete atomization. The equipment and time involved is costly and that's why you pay more for a 2k paint job by the pros. IMO your better off paying a pro to do the job given the cost of materials upfront and how easy it is to waste or stick with acrylic. Cheers Ben Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: waynos on August 18, 2012, 02:28:53 PM thanks guys
i got a good mask itll be at my parents in the bush so not really anyone to kill but myself a panel beater told me to put blankets up the overspray will stick to that and i aint about to pay a pro cause ive done everything myself to this point except got my dizzy rebuilt and got my battery cables made so, im only doin the roof i figure im not the first to do this outside i got a 1.4 tip gravity feed will that be ok? i know about paint reacting with different paints itll give me somethin to look at through the candy hahaha Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: waynos on August 18, 2012, 02:31:30 PM ive heard you can get candies in acrylic
does anyone know where????? Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: Mc Bean on August 18, 2012, 02:43:59 PM Hi Waynos
If you are not sure of the outcome of your first 2 pak job, practice on a mates car first. :D :D :D Andrew Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: GMB-58FC on August 18, 2012, 02:44:47 PM ive heard you can get candies in acrylic does anyone know where????? You can buy candy/pearl etc acrylic or mix you own, have a chat to your local paint supply store as I'm sure they would have something instock. If not you can get it off Ebay for about $15 delivered from the US. Be aware when using an acrylic based candy/pearl that they are generally designed for a tri-coat application using a HVLP (High pressure/ Low volume) system and should be done in a booth so you have a steady temperature. Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: waynos on August 18, 2012, 04:17:14 PM andrew,

It just depends if you want a flake or pearl finish. If you want a pearl finish you will need the powder and not the flake. To get the best results when spraying candy/pearls you generally use silver, gold or black base depending on the colour your applying. Silver or black will work for red depending on how dark you require it. Yes you mix it in with your clear but it comes back to a tri coat application eg: BASE/PEARL/CLEAR. You want roughly a 70% overlap using HVLP about 6-8" away so you don't get runs or apply to thick and between 4-6 top coats of clear. Its not so much about not being able to spray in a carport (with acrylic) the advantages of being in a booth are heating, lighting, extraction, dust free environment which all equates to a superior finish. Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: waynos on August 18, 2012, 06:41:57 PM thanks heaps grandmaster

You can face back your roof and spray over top with your mixer then clear that and see how it goes but I wouldn't spray directly over the existing clear. Are you wanting flake or pearl? Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: waynos on August 19, 2012, 08:22:56 PM roofs good
theres no existing clear i think flake just scour it or what 600 wet and dry or somethin? Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: GMB-58FC on August 19, 2012, 10:52:15 PM roofs good theres no existing clear i think flake just scour it or what 600 wet and dry or somethin? Again it depends on the existing paint job and how well the clear has held up. All you want to do it face back the clear/shine so id start with 2000 wet & dry (wet obviously) and go from there. Just make sure you use a good wax/grease remover prior to spraying ;) Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: FC427 on August 20, 2012, 08:51:23 AM i have a really good paint supplier but it was friday arvo they were about to close so didnt wanna answer my questions.........i dont see why i cant paint candy in the carport..........not everyone had a shed in the 50s..........more bugs and crap the better hahaha......its a beater i just wanna break up the satin black a bit My rod is Candy Pearl and I painted under the carport ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;....FC427.....(http://)(http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii234/FC427/IMG_2126.jpg) Title: Re: how to 2 pack Post by: zl296 on August 20, 2012, 01:59:30 PM just leaning to 2/pak paint...
