Post by: customFC on May 07, 2003, 12:06:31 PM
Here is an advert for the used car division of Holden dealers. This division was called OK Used Cars. Ad appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, 15 May, 1959.

hi alex  looks like "ok used cars" was a nationwide theme ,taken up by gmh
a few items here with the same flavor..one is a printers block..took the pic from a mirror to make it easier to read.
i think gmh may have sent them to the dealers to pass on to printers of small country town local papers..only logical reason for our local dealer to have had this?
the spot in the middle is where i pulled a5'' nail from...it was used as a spike for paper work
                           cheers trev
ps you could be right cat    pillarless fe  coupe

Great pics.  Yeah we had OK used cars (GMH) in Qld too.  Theory sounds feasible that it was standard around Oz.

Nice items Trev.
I believe the OK used car thing was also used in the USA to sell used Chevys etc.

Hi All.
It was an Australia wide theme that they got from the USA. Detriot had been using it since the 40's, it worked well there, so they tried it here. I recently had an "OK" Used Cars paperweight. It looked great.

Has anyone noticed in the first black/white pic that they used womens hands for the bloke holding the OK tag? Check the long slim fingers and the nails! This was a commomn pic used for many adds - a real generic face and the advert artist  just super imposes some othe art to make the picture. Seems plaugerism was alive and well back then too . In NZ this face was used to sell a brand of porridge... Cheers streetneat

Alex
I tried looking through these adverts, but to my dismay most posts only had a big X.

Cheers Jim

Hey Jim, it's been a long time coming, but the pic has been updated.
The challenge now is to see if those that posted subsequent pics can restore them to this post.  ;)
