Title: Steel rim mags- smoothy?smoothies?
Post by: Oggz on August 06, 2012, 11:52:54 PM
After some steel rim mags, I think they used to call them smoothies, look alot like these

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HD-HR-Holden-mags-also-suit-FE-FC-EJ-EH-Holden-/320958386039?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4aba9c4f77 ($2)

Am looking within a 200kmish radius of the gold coast so i can pick them up, I would buy the above listed but courier cost from there would I think enrage the minister of war and finance.

to be honest, I would rather just have the centers to weld into some 14" or 15" bands...

Cheers
J

You can get a 15''band to take 14'' centres but i'm sure they don't make a 14''band to take a 13''centre,i'd be doin a bit more homework just to be sure, also they won't weld your centres in unless they're a tight fit, some rims vary on the inside diameter,i've been there done that, good luck. Gaz!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those wheels on Ebay all steel?
I've always been of the opinion that mag (short for magnesium) wheels were all alloy or at least had alloy centres.

I once bought a car which was advertised as having mag wheels and it turned out to have steel wheels similar to the sunraysia (spelling?) wheels. The clown owner said that all non-standard wheels were called mags.
Any comments?

Cheers,

Standard rims on my Grand Cherokee are Magnesium alloy (mags).
Maybe he meant anything standard that you can put a hubcap on as standard?

Yes i believe what you are saying is correct per say, but I think the term now encompasses a much broader range, when non standard non steel first came out they were made out of magnesium heavy alloy which is where the term mags comes from, but these days I think when someone says mags they mean anything non standard. Also, i think today's "mags" use a totally different and varying mix's of metal alloys to make wheels with less magnesium in the alloy than those of old.

Hmmmm, well seems we stray...As mentioned and I have also looked into this, there is no 13"centre or 14/15" band that fit together.I have sent messages to many custom wheel places in Australia and also Wheels Vintique in US but no luck.I had hoped that wheels Vintique might help with a custom pattern set as they have 15" wheels with the right centre for FC/FE cap but wrong stud pattern.Let us know how you get on as I'm sure there are plenty who would like to know if anything new has popped up.Wheels vintique do a HQ pattern with the right centre for standard hub cap if you want to change all your brakes... ???

couldnt ya beat the 13s out or press the centre to  suit the 15 that takes a 14 centre?
thought lots about this before, its only half an inch really
after getting neales wheels to widen a set for me,
the welds were not very symmetrical,
look at most steelies the insides are very shoddy.
as long as they're true and balanced i reckon they'd be fine
just a thought.....................
