Title: Downtown Dandenong Post by: Hewart on April 16, 2003, 11:12:03 AM G'day guys...
Here is a pic for all you Victorians.... a shot from the magazine "PIX" dated July 25, 1959. It's from a special report on the "new boom town" of Dandenong titled "A hive of industry". Anyway, centre of the pic (the other half is missing :-/) is a delivery truck loaded up with brand new FCs... also check out the line of cars parked in the street..!!! :o (http://photo.starblvd.net/hewart/5-3-4.jpg) Where's that time machine.... Cheers Hewart... I love to see those old shots with the FE FC's in them. That truck is awesome. Here's a pic of another truck full of FC's that are in CKD form. That 'S' on the window would make me think these are on their way to Pagewood in Sydney. Love the delivery truck shots....!!
The other thing I wondered about that Dandenong shot with the number of FE/FCs present... whether it's due to the fact that the Dandenong people bought so many of 'em to help support the industry in their area, or maybe they were company cars, or just simply because Holdens made up about half the newly registered cars back in those days... Not sure, maybe it was a combination of all of the above.... ;) Cheers... Les... Title: Re: Downtown Dandenong Post by: nicko on April 28, 2003, 08:15:24 AM My dad told me that it was about 1/3 holden,1/3 ford and the other 1/3 was english and american cars
Title: Re: Downtown Dandenong Post by: RET on April 29, 2003, 04:19:46 AM Nicko,
Way more than a third. In 1958 Holden passenger cars had 47.4% of all new car registrations, and the Holden ute 49.6% of the light commercial market. (Source: "Heart of the Lion", by John Wright, p79.) That means every second car bought was an FC Holden. At that time there was no local Ford manufacturing, so their presence was significantly smaller. There was probably 1/3rd each market share in the mid sixties I would reckon, with Chrysler, US imports and the earliest Japanese imports and dwindling UK imports making up the other 1/3rd. cheers RET Title: Re: Downtown Dandenong Post by: nicko on April 29, 2003, 11:41:53 AM i rang my old man and he thought i meant in the mid 60's .
he went on to say there was really only 1 choice unless you could afford a yank tank and that was a holden Title: Re: Downtown Dandenong Post by: Cat on April 30, 2003, 02:44:35 AM Well all this just goes to confirm that I really was born in the wrong era!
