Title: Blind Panel Van
Post by: slim on April 09, 2003, 01:13:59 AM
I am currently having a rear upper tailgate made  up as an original Blind panel van had , IE no rear upper glass, I cannot locate one so Am taking to making one up. Did It have a rear Rubber round the inside where the glass is , Or were they a one piece metal  panel . Any help much appreciated . Any pictures of the rear tailgate upper  would be fantastic also .

Hi Slim,
All the vans that I've seen with the solid rear window area have not had any rubber seals. Too high tech for the fifties I reckon.
I've attached a Holden pre-release pic of the van rear end. Photo is dated 25/2/58 so it might have been in proto-type mode still. I've had to reduce the size and crop the surrounds quite a lot to post it here (took forever!) so the resolution dropped a lot. I also have a full side-on shot & can reduce that & post if you like or can email the larger pics to you if you want.
cheers,
Leigh

I'd bet that this is the real McCoy (ie not prototypical). I doubt the tailgate changed between windowless FE van and w/less FC.

Thats very Helpful, If you could email them pics to me would be much appreciated. My email address is esposito350@ozemail.com.au.  I took the upper tailgate to my Friends panel shop today. And an outer sunvisor for my van ! Should give it a spunky new look.

Is that a chrome strip around the water channel on the roof?

Jason.

A guy in our club has had an upper gate made with no window and will finish the van soon.  It is being made as a copy of the van in the FC sales brochure, complete with the florists signwriting.  Should be a top van as it is a full ground up resto and a lot of NOS stuff has gone into it.

Sorry Slim, I missed your earlier post re pictures.
I don't have a photo of the end gate but I have seen it.
The outside looks like yours, the inside has been very carefully joined so that only the outer skin has been welded up and the inner skin remains with a clean end, just as the original would have looked.

Hey Slim,

The gate looks pretty good... What would it cost to get another one done?

Thanks
Jason.  ;D
