David on photobucket when you hover the arrow over the picture you will see a box appear with different choices on it, if  you click on the bottom one it will say copied. Then when you change to this site all you have to do it right click and paste onto here.

Maybe that will help...

Cheers

The blue FE belongs to Eddie Dobbs - ex Blanchard car and very fast for a grey. The Ken Zinner "FX" Humpy is also a very fast car and has been sold on. Ken produced "Zinner gearboxes" for early racers including mine - grey box with later model internals and very strong.

Dave do you have any photos of my FC - red - white stripe- no 53 - did have Brendan Wilson's name on the guard.

Thanks Weddo for tne information and the pic of your car ...looks great ....

Similar to this Appendix "J" FC I snapped a pic of back in about 1980 ...It was Corowa based and for sale in a used car yard in Ballarat Vic ...

Wonder what ever happened to it ?

Restored for racing by Brendan Wilson in 1984 and raced ever since
I still have the white steel wheels with my semi slicks on them.

Hey RET , Thanks for the edits ... haven't quite worked it out yet !!!

Cheers , Dave .

No problem. There is a YouTube button next to the one you use for static images. Clicking it produces this:

Code:
[youtube=425,350][/youtube]

Replace the 425,350 with the dimensions of the video you're posting (you can find that in the 'Embed' code on the YouTube site).
Put the video ID between the tags.

So one of your previous examples (the V8 Effie) which was this:

Code:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7s6jG809tXw

would look like this:

Code:
[youtube=420,315]7s6jG809tXw[/youtube]

Hope that makes sense. If the video appears in the "Preview", you know you've got it right.

cheers

Recent footage from historic meeting at Baskerville. A bit long and not the best clarity. Regularity race.. interesting when you nominate a lap time but still have to contend with other cars. Did actually come second with only the loss of five points (you start with 50 points and you loose points for every second over or under your lnominated lap time)

I don't think it is grey powered, might be in sports sedan division looking at the width of the rear wheels.

Good on ya Davo. Yep, it was great to catch up with you and Nick. I am now safely back at home. I don't know this car, at a guess it isn't an Appendix J car as the wheels appear to be too wide. An FE (as EH's are) would be restricted to 5.5" wide wheels. Or 6" alloy. These look to be at least 7", on the back anyway.

Just read Weddo's post. In agreeance.
Colin.

Ha-Ha! Love the CARBQ! Love to be part of the christening!

I don't think that's a racer at all. A street car done up as a racer? I can't see any roll cage and it seems to have standard belts. He is wearing a helmet, the headlights don't appear to be taped up. (we have clear contact over ours. It scrunches over the round glass) It has a tow sticker but has a roof aerial. See how his wipers are hard down on the screen chrome? I would expect them to be getting pushed up. It's got bonnet pins. Can anyone blow the piccy up? I can't see a roll cage. This point upsets the whole cart. I can't see an external kill switch either.

It's a really good looking car. Sits nice and low. Wouldn't be in regularity or sports sedan. Maybe at a club track day or similar?

Colin.

I'm sorry if the owner sees these posts, I'm not trying to be picky. I really like the car. It has a tinted screen. Big no-no. He must be at a public drive day or something like that.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: weddo on June 12, 2012, 09:31:23 PM
Hey Collin, how are ya!!

Right click on the photo - "save picture as" - save to your computer and blow it up yourself.
Your right with your observation though, standard belts, no roll cage, tow point indicator but no tow point visible, arial for pit crew contact  ::), open window for kill switch (key)

On the other hand, nice flared front guards and rear guards look to have been eased out with extended "V" at rear of wheel arch,
but a bit of a bingle under driver side sill.

The ties on the bonnet pins are just long enough that when the bonnet pops at speed it might allow sufficient air under the bottom to rip the fixing points off and blow the bonnet right over your head.

Just joking !!!!!  ;) ;)it is a nice looking car (even for and FC)  ::)

And I apologise to the owner as well.

Definitely not John Goss, nor anything to do with John Goss...

By the beginning of 1966 Goss was into a Customline, there was no car between the FJ and the Cusso to my knowledge and it certainly wouldn't have carried Queensland plates.

I really should know who this is but I don't remember. It will come up in time, however. The Valiant should be even more memorable.

Bruce McPhee had the most 'memorable' car in the field in the Appendix J days, Lou Kingsley in the pre-Appendix J days, while Bob Holden got the one that Repco built up and had been raced by Stan Jones.

Others who raced them included John Raeburn, Alan Dewhurst and Fred Rheinberger. Later in the Sports Sedan days there were many. Chris Strode had one, Barry Sharp has been mentioned, I think his went on to Bill Warner.

The problem is that the FE and FC were from a period when tintop racing wasn't big. The Armstrong 500 started in 1960 and the FB was already well and truly out then, so there was never a serious endurance race for production cars in their time. In other racing they were always considered to be too heavy alongside the early models, but blokes like McPhee were always willing to try to prove a point.

Probably the same one as either Sharp or Warner or both... I'd have to check up on that...

But I've found one!

An inveterate FE racer of the fifties, Lou Kingsley, ventured over to Perth in 1957 and won the West Australian Touring Car Championship at Caversham.

That's a state title to an FE.

Ray, you dont happen to have any photos of  any WA fe touring cars from the era at all?

Iam building one at the moment and wanted to base it on a known or successful local car.

Thanks,Gary.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: Ray Bell on February 28, 2013, 01:18:43 PM
Gary, I would seriously doubt that there were any 'successful local cars' in the FE or FC range...

Let's face it, you can count on the fingers of your hands all of the FE or FC cars that ever raced more than once or twice in all of Australia. Of those, the McPhee standard-model FE in lime green with two narrow stripes (an ex-MWS&DB - Sydney Water Board - car) would surely have been the best known. Before it there was Kingsley's, and it did travel around the country and made one trip to WA.

The Bob Holden car is another that got around, but I'd doubt it went further than Adelaide or Sydney from its Melbourne base. I have never seen a photo of this car, I don't think.

Remember, the pre-1960 cars were a bit 'open slather' when it came to modifications. I am sure that Kingsley's car, like Holden's, the Geoghegan, French etc early models, had Repco heads. Syd Anderson's early model was customised and had an FE grille... sort of... and wire wheels, probably a Repco head as well.

Having said that, and looked also at the placegetters in the WATCC events over the years, I'd say it is possible that someone might have had an FE or FC. Unlikely, but possible. Dave Sullivan didn't, nor did Terry LeMay, George Wakelin, Harley Pederick.

You need to go to the WASCC library and find information on this stuff. People who can help might be Ken Devine (he has photos, lots of photos), Terry Walker (check out 'terrywalkersplace' on the net) or Rod Waller.

Here's a pic of the Kingsley car at Caversham, complete with 'protection' from loose stones. This photos is from Terry Walker's book, Around the Houses:

Note that he's pulling to the side to allow that Peugeot to outbrake him...

Gary.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: Ray Bell on March 01, 2013, 12:32:57 AM
They're always the big problems...

I'd suspect it's possible Kingsley's had something special in the brakes, something McPhee wouldn't have been allowed to do as he came along after Appendix J started.

Don Hall would be someone else you could ask.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: Ray Bell on March 15, 2013, 09:52:55 PM
Having spoken to Bob Holden I can confirm that Kingsley's car did have a Repco head, a 4-speed brakes and most likely disc brakes...

Bob was also good enough to send me photos of his ex-Repco Research FE racing, I forgot to upload them before I left home but that shall soon be done and they'll be posted here.

Does anyone have any pictures of an FC circuit raced by Tony Parkinson primarily in SA in the late 60's early 70's? It was black with a wide red stripe down the centre of the car. It ran a 192 with triple twin throat webers. It was pretty quick down the 1/4 mile in it's day too, running flat 14's at about 96mph. Any pictures or info would be appreciated.

I wasn't aware of Fred ever racing any Holden... perhaps he prepared it?

He raced, that I recall:

MG A Twin Cam
Morris 850
Lightweight Lotus Elan (x2)
Morris Cooper S
Falcon GTs and GT HOs
Brabham Climax 2.5
Elfin 400 Chev
McLaren M4a FVA
Alfa GTV2000
Nissan Bluebird

No... he did drive Joe Moore's A9X at Bathurst in '79.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: fe350chev on March 19, 2013, 11:20:32 PM
perhaps the humpy was the first one he prepared or had some dealings with.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: Ray Bell on March 20, 2013, 12:29:00 PM
Perhaps...

I'm sure Fred was into the MG A Twin Cam by the time I first attended a race meeting. I've never heard of him racing an early Holden at all, so I am dubious. Maybe he prepared it for someone else.

A couple of other things.

Tony Parkinson... Don Lemm would undoubtedly have photos of his car. But I feel sure that Tony is still around too, I think I spoke to him just a couple of years ago. Try the SCC of SA library, you have people like Michael Gasking there who are keen to help out.

Thanks, FE UTE - that clarifies the FE and Brock situation. I would almost guarantee that Peter had nothing to do with that car. First, because he was busy enough with his A30, second because there was at that time a growing animosity between Peter and Phil. Well, maybe not animosity. Phil saw parental favour being thrown Peter's way with his growing success while he got none of that attention.

I feel quite sure that Phil would have reckoned he had to do it all himself. Geoff probably helped, but Peter wouldn't have been a party to it at all.

I wouldn't guarantee that Peter is coming up to lap Phil, either. This race was a rare one, I don't recall many wet races at Sandown at all, but on September 14 1969 it did rain and this race was the worst affected on the day.

Peter spun when the flag came down to start the race, so the whole field streamed away around him. He did catch up and was to finish second in the event, but with only eight laps it's not all that likely that he would have lapped Phil.

Title: Re: Racing early Holdens
Post by: Ray Bell on March 20, 2013, 01:02:53 PM
I can't find how to edit my last post!

On going through the race report again, I think what I wrote above is incorrect. I think the report, though it says that Peter 'spun', means that he 'spun his wheels'.

Looking more thoroughly at the context of it all, it seems he was not left behind by much, nor passed by the multitudes.

So yes, he would be coming up to lap Phil in this pic.

Alongside the 1957 WATCC for Lou Kingsley, Bob Holden won the 1958 Victorian Saloon Car Championship on October 19th at Fisherman's Bend. Bob didn't quite get the Repco car, but got all the running gear from it given to him by Charlie Dean and put it into an ex-taxi. I figure the changeover was between April and December 1957, as that is when the Repco car last appeared and the Holden Holden first appeared.

Thanks for the extra information...

I'm guessing you saw a lot of the racing in those days?

No, not at all Ray as I had yet to be conceived. But during my Gold Star research I was able to uncover a lot of information on the pre-Appendix J racing, and as the first family car I can remember (and they will always be fond memories) was a two-tone green FC Station Sedan, any appearances of an FE-FC on a racetrack that I would read about would stay in my memory bank. And it was good to catch up for a chat tonight  :)

One driver that I am intrigued by is Ian Izon in an FE. His first appearance was in June 16 1958 at Phillip Island, where he finished 7th in the Saloon Scratch Race, but subsequently won both the Saloon and Saloon and Sports Handicaps. He then went to Fishermen's Bend for the Victorian Saloon Car Championship (unknown finish, but lower than 4th) and then the 2 week meeting at Albert Park (DNF Oil pressure after 5 of 8 laps, and unknown finish but lower than 9th the following week)

And no further sightings on my spreadsheet.

Hmmm... that makes me wonder if I should ever have handed over those Sports Car World magazines to you...

Nice to see you adding to the information here, Dave.
