I'm suffering from withdrawal..  :'(

I dropped the wagon in at Flames place this arvo ready to be pulled apart and fixed up.

Flames fitted wheels to the rotisserie and the whole lot went on the tilt tray to the sand blasters, to give them access to every nook and cranny

Flames said three months. And gave me an estimated quote

and I believe him    :o ::)  ???  ;D.

But if I rock up to our Nats in the "Ugly Duckling" and I'm completely pennyless you'll know something went HORRIBLY wrong.

I expect it to take a while ( and cost a bit ). We're doing it properly not a patch up job. Theres a few previous "modifications" that need to be fixed up and theres a few minor modifications I want to add to it while its all apart. I want it in tip top shape for our Nats and I want it to last another 50 years.

It's Flames (and his team of specialists) full time job not a weekend fix up thing. I just have to pay for the labour and parts and materials and etc etc etc.......

Got to go now,  I've just received the first bill, so i've got more overtime at work to do  :D

We found a couple of fibreglass repair patches from the original rebuild ( It was built by a previous owner approx 20 years ago)

my question has been answered

 Q.   What is holding my seatbelts onto the B pillar ?
 A.   One small nut !

Radiator support panel thing. (the original dissapeared during those earlier "modifications" when the bigger radiator was fitted

The gearbox mount has been strengthened so its not supported by 4 bolts through a rusty floor. And modified so gearbox can be removed without ripping out interior carpets and seats  ;D

just a little bit of info on the sills, the drivers side had been replaced about 15 years ago but the profile was wrong so i ordered another from rare parts over here in perth. i had lent them a NOS sill about 5 years ago which they used as a template, so they could have there own made up
when i picked it up i thought it didnt look right and told them i would check it when i got home, they said they had sold a lot and no one else had said anything.
when i got back i checked and the profile was wrong so i made a cardboard template and took it back so they could re-do it.
over the years i suppose they have had different guys on the bender and it has changed, so they re did it and now it is spot on

The wagons back on its wheels again with all the holes filled in, the undercarriage is all rustproofed and painted. Craigs going to put it back together to make sure all the panels fit correctly before smoothing everything out and pulling it all apart for painting

the bottom of a door that was saved, and the holey piece that came of it
Flames found fiberglass repairs in the bottom of all the doors. They were very well done (about 18 years ago) and if I hadn't sandblasted and taken the easier option of rubbing back and respraying they could have been overlooked. Now its all steel, rustproofed and painted

I was going to keep this all a secret and suprise you at the Nats
but I'm hopless at keeping secrets and got excited about showing you how good it looks

Because of the hassles trying to figure out stainless (chrome) options to seperate paint colours, we've chosen to do a subtle silver pinstripe extending from the tailfins to seperate the white and blue

The  orignal plan was to finish the blue at the diagonal stainless piece that comes down the back door. But HORRIBLE bodylines on the wagon around the windows and door area meant we needed another plan. So we've extended the blue along the body to the front door. And this proved to be the better look as it will tie in the blue better with the blue that will go on the dashboard  and inside the front doors. And it lengthens the body rather than making it 'boxy' with just the short blue patch.

The pin stripe works really well. Any tips on putting pins stripes on? I have the same silver stripe to put on my boat.

and (another one of the bits I was going to keep secret. But I can't resist showing you) the custom built underdash panel to fit all the gauges, switches, caravan brake controller, security system,horn, hazardlights, power outlets, etc etc

The large panel fits up under the hinged speaker grille and houses the stereo system and fuse box

The blue is also a commodore series II colour.  Voodoo Blue

Well done, thats one good looking wagon, the colours look good together and that pinstrip really sets it off. I was also toying with the under dash panel, but just for the radio, gauges and heater/fan controls.

It was 40+ Celsius (in the shade) and Flames couldn't get under the car on the trolley and ended up lying on the bitumen. (this is why I don't do these things.. I do lots of overtime !)

BUT... one rusty, round nut and bolt and doing the job during my lunch break meant going to

Just pull off the piece needed and cable tie the remainder to the body so it doesn't drag on the ground !

The steering wheel is at the shop being turned into a "sports" steering wheel
seats are being trimmed as I type, and the door panels are being done.

Just a drive shaft to go back on, paint the wheels, fit a bit more trim put interior back together, put some carpet on the floor

I was thinking of finding a long dusty gravel road that runs alongside a swamp and driving through there at full speed with the headlights on to attract lots of bugs  :o :o :o

and then turning up to the Nats with the wagon in its usual condition (minus the rusty bits and the gaffa tape holding it together)

Does the rebuild now mean I have to park in the far corners of the Coles carpark and WALK  :o to the shop ?
Can I still throw bags of manure in the back like I used to ?

And can I put my saltwater soaked longboard on the roof after one of my early morning surfing sessions ?

its your car surferboy, you can do all of those things. It would be a shame though, you probably will again in 10 years or so.

Surfboards maybe but that nice white seat might not like a bag of manure..

11 months of blood sweat and tears (for Flames..... not me  ;D)
For me its 11 months of overtime (and LOTS more still to come  :o ) to pay for it.

But it's NEARLY finished

Flames drove it over to the upholsterers (No 2) last week to finish the interior

got the call yesterday to check it out
first time in 11 months I've seen it in the sun... and the blue bits in the shade  ::)

added the touch of blue to the two tone grey panels to brighten them up and tie it together with the exterior. It continues the flow from the dashboard and is the reverse of the exterior stripe

plain simple black carpet and boot over the "unique prototype" 1959 3spd manual floor shift

some new paint and scuff plates look much better

as rooflining got fitted earlier with windows but windlacing didn't get fitted
do I take the easy pinchweld option to trim the rooflining
Has anybody else trimmed their FC with pinchweld ? (does it look OK ?)
