He had his boat at goolwa for years. If there was any trouble getting it to somewhere or if the guy wanted to drive it to reynella, i am sure my folks would help you to store it their at their place until a suitable arrangement could be made.

Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 16, 2011, 10:25:06 PM Which one you talking about Rat. I rang Adelaide car express late last night to see if the no. was operational . Some guy did answer to my surprise and I explained my situation but he didn't want to know me. referred me to a mob in QLD.
So far ACR is the cheapest @ $1115 door to door. This is probably my only option as it has limited rego in SA. Depot to depot is by far the cheapest Wingfiled near Adelaide to Villawood in Sydney is $515. But getting i to Adelaide and then I'd have to drive it up to Port. An extra 500 buck for 500 K's :-\ Compare that to 270 bucks for a single airfare to Adelaide and a 1800k trip home in an untried and unknown vehicle. 20 years ago I would have jumped at the chance. I hate dilemmas. I can't belive ive turned into a conservative. :o Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 17, 2011, 10:23:19 AM Mild to Wild or Competitive Towing in Adelaide should be able to get the car from Goolwa to Winfield, not sure about rates though.
PM or email Cajerridoc, he's down that way and might know of other transport options. Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: DN2168 on March 17, 2011, 11:25:32 AM ROAD TRIP.....ROAD TRIP.....ROAD TRIP ;D
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: JB on March 17, 2011, 11:42:40 AM When I got my ute, I drove it from Byron Bay to Cairns... about 1800km's was awesome fun, but broke down with a tiny wiring issue... took ages to find it. When I got home the leaks in the engine and the play in the steering made the early start to the modifications.
Would do it again though! JB Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: EffCee on March 17, 2011, 01:53:11 PM Nick,
I would have no hesitation in driving it across, after checking with the current (former) owner that the car does run, is able to drive, has no known issues and that the brakes work effectively. I would obtain a permit from the SA rego authority to drive the car across. I would take a basic tool kit with me, and purchase oil, a large water container (25L) and some spares, such as fan belt and radiator hoses. Have a look and check the heater hoses too, if fitted and check over anything that looks suspect. Have the engine gearbox and diff oils changed. Have the brakes checked. Take a spare fuel pump and gasket. Also take a spare fuel line hose (the braided hose) that connects to the fuel pump to the fixed line. Either purchase a bag of rags or take some with you. A lot of the above you should be able to do yourself, which may save yourself a few dollars. Once this is checked, then take off! Keep checking the car every 20 miles of so, keeping an ear out for noised that sound unfamiliar, or water mist coming out from under the bonnet. after the first 100 miles, then you will have an indication of how you are travelling, if no issues have surfaced, then check every town that you travel through, just pull up at a service station and check all fluids. Don't take the radiator cap off, just squeeze the top radiator hose. If it feels full and won't compress then all is OK. If the sides of the radiator hoses touch together, then you will have to remove the radiator cap. Be very carefull when doing this, place a rag over the cap, and loosen it to the first notch. Let the steam escape, leaving it for a few minutes. then carefully remove the cap, again with a rag over the radiator. Either way I wish you all the best with your new car. Keith Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: NosFEratu on March 17, 2011, 02:00:44 PM Are you an NRMA premium cover member (not sure if that's what it's called over there) - might pay to become one for this year to ensure you can get the car towed "home" in the worst case scenario. Hey, you only live life once - get some adventure back in it! Nothing like a road trip - especially one that you're not sure you're going to make! :D
You could also let everyone on here know when you're going and what route and get some phone numbers of forum members along the way for back up - if you need it. Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: NosFEratu on March 17, 2011, 02:03:27 PM And if you need a lift from the airport to Goolwa and it's on a weekend - let us know and we'll see what we can do for you. :) as long as it's not Easter!
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 17, 2011, 02:34:02 PM Thanks for the responses everyone.
I'm definitly going to think about it. It would be a fun trip and your idea Kathi is a great one about getting contacts along the way ;) I want this as a club car while i do up the other wagon so don't want to flog it too much . I'd go mental if I had two one the mend :'( My last FC road trip was to Alice springs and back in an untried newly renovated 8) standard sedan in 1990. Pictures of that to follow, Have to dig them out. Do you think I could get a permit for the drive over the phone. If I were to do it it would be down Saturday and back for work Monday. May have to take a day off work.... then you loose that days pay..... Back to transporting it :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: NosFEratu on March 17, 2011, 05:30:39 PM OK – just been on the phone to a friend who knows the rego system here pretty well. He says all states (except WA) recognise each other’s unregistered vehicle permits.
Get together all the ID numbers for the vehicle (including the current rego number) and go to your local NSW rego office. Tell them you want an Unregistered Vehicle Permit as you want to buy and a vehicle on SA historic rego and drive it back to NSW. He recommended that you mention it is on historic rego as it will demonstrate to them that it’s technically registerable and not some piece of crap……. although, it is an FC. Tell them the start and end address of your trip and that you plan to take the most direct route using major roads – allowing for overnight accommodation etc if need be. My friend reckons you shouldn’t have any problems with getting a Permit but asked you to contact me if you do and then he’ll make some inquiries here on your behalf. Hope this helps Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: NosFEratu on March 17, 2011, 05:32:03 PM sorry there should have been a question mark after the FC! can't see the pics at work so not sure what model it is ;)
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: fe350chev on March 17, 2011, 06:50:50 PM Hi
Like I said, if u do the drive i could be your first stop, 500km from adelaide, should be able to do it in 1 day. U could stay in our caravan and give it a good check, I know plenty of blokes here who are mechanics who couls ort it to get u going, then if u were not sure about it, we could trailer it to melbourne (depending on what day it was) and at least u would have made it there which from there would be considerably cheaper to get it on the truck from there to sydney. Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: JB on March 17, 2011, 09:29:10 PM The other thing that you should always have with you is some fencing wire... You never know what can break and is amazing how a bit of fencing wire gets you out of the crap!
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 17, 2011, 10:08:23 PM I would like to thank everyone for their help and some very generous offers.
Due to a number of factors such as daughters birthday this weekend. (14)... Hastings old Holdens classic cruise the next weekend and then wife's BD (15 :D :D :D :D oops 50 :o) too the weekend after that. (she really would be "not happy Jan")Easter, etc etc I have decided to get her shipped up. Probably the wisest move. The seller was abit coy when I asked about services etc and brakes, He said that it was fine for the 30 ks' he drives it each week . It would more than likely do it with ease. I'll just get it back here and give it the once over and do a local run. Its a grand I didn't want to spend but had resigned myself to at least 700 before I bought it so 400 bucks extra and I save my butt and back 20 hours of driving in a day and a half. ( i think I've talked myself into it now) Kathi if your ever up this way you can get free Physio for the duration ;D Thanks to all again. More pictures next week. For now Back to the rust repairs..... my welding is coming along. Making a workbench this afternoon before a huge storm and blackout (http://s4.postimage.org/2hhiw7nfo/Picture_016.jpg) ($2) (http://s4.postimage.org/2hhugz2w4/Picture_017.jpg) ($2) nearly finished Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: fe350chev on March 17, 2011, 11:05:37 PM Does that mean your missus is really 58??? :D....................... :-\
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: FCRB26 on March 18, 2011, 05:06:03 AM whats your plans for your bench top .
I have been using 38mm particle timber stuff then sheet it in 1.5 gal for people seems to feel a bit more solid. Pete Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 18, 2011, 07:07:06 AM whats your plans for your bench top . Hi PeteI'm using 19 mm yellow tongue . water proof and reasonably solid,- thats why the extra supports. Thats a good idea about the gal sheeting. Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: NosFEratu on March 18, 2011, 07:58:24 AM Thanks Nick ;) hope the "move" goes well :)
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: FCRB26 on March 18, 2011, 08:24:34 AM That will do the trick.
I just find the sheeting easy to wipe and a earth if you are welding. Also i never knew they made self tappers for yellow tongue to steel they have little wings that clear the timber as you are drilling and they self countersink.. Pete Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 18, 2011, 07:52:30 PM Call me Cranky BUT... I accepted the "QUOTE" from ACR for $1115 and that was a hard decision to make. Get an email back saying their quote is now $1145 due to increased fuel costs. Whats 30 bucks worth of fuel into 1700K's. I told them to shove it! :-*my ass.

Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: weddo on March 19, 2011, 09:01:29 PM Nick,
I have done a few trips in old cars and as long as you pack the essential spares and take your time with plenty of stops you should make it with ease. You don't have to race and it dosen't matter if every one passes you. There are enough members along the way to get you out of trouble if you need assistance (I'm in Tassie so I think it might count me and Judi out) You will know in the first 100ks if it is going to make it. Good luck if you opt for the road trip. Regards Weddo Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 20, 2011, 08:12:25 PM Car is now safely at Stephen's house in Waitpinga. He has been a Godsend in getting the car and giving me the lowdown which I will share some of it with you. Stephen wrotr
Matt (ex owner) drove your car here OK, with no problems, he took it to a Servo to get petrol, and it boiled, because it had no water in the radiator , and then we could not get the radiator cap undone, and when it did come off with a hammer and multigrips it broke in the centre, so he used his FB radiator cap, and took it back home with him,.. I have a spare I will put on later this week,.. The motor runs OK, has a tappet noise that needs attention, the radiator has a black bubbly substance in it... possibly old Bardahl, which is a radiator additive from the 50’s, and it turns everything black and clogs up the waterways in the block if left sitting, or possibly the radiator hoses have disintegrated on the inside and the black stuff is rubber in the water ??? will give it a flush when I get the time and try to get the water clean, I have some old but good radiator hoses, so will replace the ones on there as well, hopefully this should, fix any over heating problems .. can change the oil if you like as it looks like it has been there a while ..If you are going to drive it back, let me know and will do the above things and check gearbox and diff, give it a grease and generally get it so it wont pack up on you .. I think the motor is sound enough to get you home by taking it easy, as it runs OK, have not tried to drive it, but Matt says the brakes are OK .. all you need is GO and STOP .. what more could you ask for .. The body has surface rust mostly all over, but the worst appears to be drivers side and driver side rear door, the sill and the panel in front of the drivers side door at the bottom, and the drivers side mudguard bottom where the stay bolt goes thru ..this has been by a leak. probably in the corner of the windscreen, as there was a pool of water in the rust area it’s raining heavily down here so could not take a lot of photos, will try and get underneath and check it out for you later in the week (http://s4.postimage.org/1rdlgqec/015.jpg) ($2) (http://s4.postimage.org/1rqtrick/014.jpg) ($2) Don't you love his description in the ad, some rust in the driver door ::) More soon Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: Not Happy Jan on March 20, 2011, 08:24:10 PM This may have to be moved to the Cars Under Restoration section sooner rather than later.
Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: fe350chev on March 20, 2011, 09:44:21 PM Actually you are being quite diplomatic, the advert said "has a slight bit of rust in drivers side". :-\
Do u know when those pics on ebay were taken? I hope you have some good news for under the car. If u need any assistance just sing out. Title: Re: Think i just bought another one Post by: GMB-58FC on March 23, 2011, 12:21:20 PM WOW, if that's "slight" rust Id hate to see anything that is considered substantial!!!
Either way looks like you have the base for a good project in the making. |
