Title: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: Moon on February 08, 2011, 02:34:37 PM Hi all, just wondering if anyone has put an ecotec into their rides along with a torana front end? I have a motor out of a VS & a LH front end and would like to use this combo into an FC. I know about how the fitment of front end is to be done, just want some info on setting up engine mounts position & fab. ???
All info AND ESPECIALY PICS ( :P) greatly appreciated! Cheers, Moon. Title: Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: hrpremier on February 15, 2011, 11:03:48 PM Me Too. Late last year I relocated interstate and am now ready to start progessing on my car again.
I have a hr front end in it at the moment, but am seriously considering obtaining a torana LX - LH front end. Apparently this makes the Holden V6 sump clearance a non if not limited problem. I am told it (a torana front sub frame)will not bolt up like the hr one did (easily) and will need some modification to the front cross member to make it fit. On the ej-eh web site I found a couple of links where the mod had been done but unsure if the EH Subframe is much different to the FE-FC. http://forum.ejehclubqld.com/ehclub/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7578&whichpage=1 http://www.ejehclubqld.com/ehclub/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8538 and also on fastlane found a query where a EK owner was asking the same question and was told major mods needed to be done. http://www.fastlane.com.au/forums/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=16723 and this may be useful also for ideas on strengthening for engineering requirements. I am more than aware of the V6 conversions option but like most on here I am approx $5000 sheckles short on their asking price. Even if I had a secret stash I'm sure the "minister of finance" would have other ideas and already spent in on boring things like bills and life's necessities. As far as this site goes the best link I've found and book marked is http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,13343.0.html but it shows NO pics of subframe installment and or engine mounts. Just lists as fitted LH torana front end. As I'm yet to purchase my front end is LX, LH and UC the only torana options and is a 6 or V8 optioned front end best to use. Sorry to Moon for semi hi-jacking his thread. Just thought I would share what I've found with him. If you could respond to ....... http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,15305.new.html instead of stealing this thread it would be appreciated. Thanks Jase (hrpremier) Title: Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: Ed on February 16, 2011, 08:00:55 AM I posted a link here.
http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,15305.40.html thankyou FB/EK forum and Gaz V8EK4us for the write up. Cheers Ed Title: Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: Ed on February 16, 2011, 08:06:21 AM Moon,
for the engine mounts I would sit then engine where you want it, maybe tack it in place using some braces then fab up the mounts in the correct spot. I would set the gearbox drive angle to about 2 - 4 degrees down, and the diff pinion to about 2 - 4 degrees up. To set the angle, use an angle pointer thing.. sorry forgot the name. but you get them at bunnings. Hope this helps. Title: Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: hrpremier on February 16, 2011, 09:09:02 PM Thats a great help Ed. Thanks for that. Looks like it's a do-able job. Just need to source a LH, LX or UC torana front end now.
Jase Title: Re: ECOTEC WITH TORANA FRONT END INFO NEEDED Post by: Moon on February 16, 2011, 10:20:28 PM One thing I have learned through this topic is some technical terms such as "angle pointer thing" and "circle centre finder thingo" :D ;D.
But seriously, thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. Hrpremier- I have read the topic on "Injected V8 again" and have been lucky enough to meet with Brett a few years ago, it was this build that gave me the inspiration to do the torana front. As Ed has also shown, a guy in the FB-EK forum did an AWSOME :o EK 350 build using the torana front end. Between those two topics, I printed out a heap of pics and have been using them as my recipe to follow so to speak. I am already into it, have stepped out crossmember, but at moment am having trouble working out actual location of the FC subframe mount plates to the front end. They seem to sit a fair way forward, and looks like you only use the front holes for mounting. Got to get this right or the wheels aren't going to look in the right spot. :( I'll try an get in touch with Brett and V8EK4us, hopefuly the can give me an actual measurement. Havn't got any pics of it yet, but when I do I will post 'em up. Thanks again for the input guys, it all helps & is ALWAYS welcome! ;) Cheers, Moon. |
