Check this out in  todays Sydney moring Herlad in Drive section for sale one grey fx done 54000 miles been in same family since new built at Fishermans Bend first week in december 1948 just after Ben Chifley did the launch of the car.They will not sell the car to any body who wants to modify price wait for this $100,000
 Caig and it is grey and they want that much what would my be worth then in that famous coulor. ??? ???

Could be the same car on the front of the last month's UNIQUE car magazine.    Makes you think what our car's could be worth in a few years time.    But yes I do think he's dreamin'!!!

There are two things that prove this guy is a FRUIT LOOP.

1.) The asking price for his car.  For that price I'd want it to be modified  ::)

2.) He thought grey was a nice shade for a car.

The only place grey ever looked good was on an engine block, even then it was superseded by red, blue and black

Grey is depressing.

Come to think of it, would that make the Strongmans' 48-215 prototype a "grey import" ?

That must be the exception that proves the rule that peer voting favours the pretty coloured cars.

Now be honest.  If you had gone ahead with your original plan to hot that wagon up, would you have painted it grey?

The grey would look realy good as always are  there people out there jealous that they have not got the No 1 colour grey. The grey always looks nice and clean not like the poo colour that is a dirty colour.

I hate to dissapoint you all, but the FX is worth every bit of $100,000 simply because of its birthdate and its original condition.  1948 FX Holdens are extremely rare and sought after by collectors, I don't remember the exact number made but it is only something like a couple of hundred.    This car is probably the best original condition (not restored) 1948 FX in existence and since it is first week in Dec production and the car was released Nov 28, its body number would be very low,  the lower the body number the better.
The thing you don't realise about these early cars is that all the panels and doors are stamped with the chassis number and it is EXTREMELY hard to find a car with all original panels with the chassis number on them.
You have to remember as well that both the number one Holden and the prototype have now been restored thus losing there original tag.

There is a FX in Perth that was sold in Melbourne last year by a local here in Perth, who also has an FC in his stable.
That was body no 316 and was the oldest unrestored in Aust. as far as I know. I dont know the no. of the car in Sydney. The  one in Perth was bought by another in Perth for less than $30000 . The car has done high 50000 miles and is in amazing condition with history. No prangs or repairs. Black with grey cloth trim

Hi according to the build records there were only 163 cars built from launch date till xmas 1948, so the one in sydney would have to have a very low build number and with so few built in 1948 this explains the rareity of the car especially considering the intervening years.

The script at the base reads "Holden in U S A.

No that Michigan prototype is the actual car restored by the Strongmans here in Melbourne,  apparently the story goes like this;
Car sold by GMH to an employee - Arthur Ling Dec 1952
Sold to brother in law Mr W Vickery 2 years later.
Sold to Kelly bros Holden dealership 2 years later
They stored the car until the Strongmans bought it in 1999
I have seen the car close up and the GMH letter holes still exist in the boot and bonnet !!

Anyway I digress.  The 316 car is a 1949 model.  Nowhere near as rare as a 1948 model.  In his book Don Loffler records only 4 known 1948 cars in total.

No 6 owned by GMH, 23,37 and 46.
Probably the car for sale is one of these 3 cars.

That Grey 48-215 for sale at the moment is body no. 19, so I think that justifies the price a lot.  Maybe $100000 is a little too wishful, but hey you never know!!  Some collectors (eg John Laws) wouldn't even quibble at a price like that I'm sure.

It was mentioned on A Current Affair last night too if anyone saw it!!

A Current Affair on channel nine.
expert valued it at $30,000
great story lasted a full 6 or 7 minutes

I saw the story as well, I find the "experts" opinion a bit astray when you consider that the Strongmans car was sold for over $250,000.
