Title: The Project - take 2
Post by: Wasim on August 10, 2010, 09:07:25 PM
It has been over 2 years since I last posted anything???? But I have been busy!!!!!!

The FC is a late Adelaide production car - In the 60's someone added a 179 and EH running gear with a floor shifter and International truck quad headlights (guards were swapped for standard ones)

Given I have never done this type of work before I'm pleased with how it's coming along?

The car with the rust cut out

My first go at welding

And then the body work (wax on wax off - about 50 times!!) Had to cut out the rear lower quarter panel and weld in one from a donor car.

Then the suspension rebuilds

Finishing the body

Inside started - car will be black with a white flash.

The engine and gearbox have been completely rebuilt ($$$$$) with some tricks?

Need to finish off the fuel system, electrical and then it's off to paint and trim.

Hi Wasim,

I recall you had the quad light car.
It looks like you have been very busy!
Nice work, what else is lurking in the background there.
Love the clean workspace. Oh the car looks great too.

Cheers

The car in the background is a 1956 Ford Zephyr six. I'm not strictly just a Holden man - I love cars from the 50's whether they be Fords, Holdens or Vaxhauls! I have fond memories as a kid of all the cars in neighbourhood and what the 'youth' of the day were doing to 'hot' them up. So I guess I'm trying to bring back some of my younger years?

The Zephyr was last on the road in 1979 and has been in a shed since with 80,000 miles on the clock - it's all original except for those big wheels stuffed under the guards and it has been lowered a couple of inches as well. Haven't really made up mind yet what to do with it - just a well - we all know the trap of having too many projects on the go at once?

Wasim.

Had a big weekend on the car:-

- Repaired the fuel tank and painted it
- Had the extractors re-worked to fit around the rear engine mounts
- Had a 21/4 inch exhaust system fitted
- With twin outlets
- Started fitting all the hardware to the engine
- Next weekend its fit the tank, fuel lines, vacuum lines and heater pipes.
- Finish off the wiring for the motor

And

- turn the key????????????????

Hi Stinky,
that tank is the one I got from you - I put a KBS tank sealing kit through it, fixed a few dents and there it is.

Post by: Wasim on August 29, 2010, 07:45:06 PM
Hi Wayne,
the rear sway bar is an original Kmac which was never fitted to a car. It had an orange plastic coating which was cracking so I removed it and painted it.

I have some 'period' coils to go over the shocks as well which I will clean and paint the same colour and fit.

With the reset leaf springs, sway bar, gas shockers and coils to be fitted - I guess I'll feel it when I run over a match????

Wasim,

That's a very nice job for someone who hasn't done this before. Congratulations on a fine job. Did you do any mods to the under side, like put in a chassis kit. Hope my ute turns out as nice. Well done again.

Keep it up.

Hi Rusty,
no chassis kit - my days of 180 degree power slides and huge wheelies are well and truely over. The engine will be lucky to 4,000 rpm with me behind the wheel.

Hi Keith,
because the car is a very late production car it has 21/4 inch wide leaf springs (fb - hr) - the insulator retainer plates on the car were very badly cracked and rusted - so when to the wreckers and got some 'better' ones off an FC but when I tried them they were too small - hence I got some FB ones - so the insulators are ones that will fit the 21/4 inch spring. The diff is EH 3.55.

Regards, Wasim.

Hi Jack,
the side plate brand is 'INDY'. From what I can gather they are 'old school' (genuine) from the 60's / early 70's. I was very lucky to get them - the gentleman who rebuilt my engine had a friend who had these plates in his shed for some years. I don't think they have ever been fitted to an engine as we had the modify them slightly to fit around the dip stick.

Got to have have good fortune now and then.

Regards, Wasim

Haven't done much in the last 3 weeks due to conferences, afl grand final Mk 1 and a school reunion - but I made up for it this weekend.

Finished off the wiring (rough in) for the engine

and

it started first go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! purrs like a kitten and sounds great

On start up these were the readings

Decided to start putting the dash together a bit more to see what it will look like when completed - pretty happy with it so far?

I mounted an EH heater slide control vertically so the heater control slides between the vertical bars in the speaker grill and added a fan switch above - all works well and looks neat?

I keep saying to myself that one day I'd like to try a full resto and see how I go. Problem is no skill, no nerve and no experience. Then I look at what you have done and think, yeah definitely not 'cos no way could I do something as nice or as good as that.

You gotta be proud of yourself - haven't you?

An up-date

After 3 and half years (mostly weekends) I have gone as far as I can - the car is now at the painters!

This is the car just before going to the painters yesterday (before and after)

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/theFC031.jpg)   (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00326.jpg)

The engine bay (before and after)

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/theFC030.jpg)  (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00328.jpg)

The boot (before and after)

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/theFC034.jpg)  (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00332.jpg)

I mounted a 2 speed electric (cable) wiper under the dash between the glovebox and bulkhead. Also added courtesy lights in the rear pillars.

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00323.jpg)  (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00320.jpg)

The front guards are all ready paint (a lot of work here to get them straight and rust free - the drivers side was an FE guard). Added the FB starts to the rear wheel spats - vertical

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00333.jpg)  (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/DSC00322.jpg)

Next pictures will be off the car all painted in Mazda 6 pearl black and a pearl white flash down the sides. Interior is being re-trimmed as well - following the original patterns - seats will be black with tuck and roll pleats and white tops (embossed) - door trim will be similar. Also picked up a new laminated front screen which is tinted light green - like a 50's car?

Hi alex,
Ever had one of those moments when you sold or traded something and then wish you hadn't????????? Well that's how I feel about the guards that had the International truck quad lights - even though I would not of used them on this car again - it would be nice to still have them hanging on the shed wall - Oh well................. but they're in a good place.

The wiper set up was a lot of mucking around but worth it in the end. It's a mixture of Lucas parts from different cars - with the actual motor I'm unsure of what car it may have come from originally - the original 'wheel' in the motor was a 175 degree sweep (stamping on the wheel) - so it must have been something with a large screen???? perhaps Jag or Triumph???? There was a fair bit of mucking around working out where to mount the motor - you can see in the picture I choose to use a large bolt through the side of the bulkhead (a bit of luck that I got it in the right spot) it tucks right up in there and allows the glovebox insert to still go in and out without any hassles.I changed the wheel to a 120 degree sweep thinking that I'd get the wiper arms to nicely sweep across the smaller FC screen - but no - I had the wiper arms sweeping right off the screen - I could of used them to signal a left and righthand turn at the same time?????? So using a little bit of maths (my old maths teacher would of been so proud of me seeing that I was kicked out of the class so many times) and calculated how much I had the move the pivot arm on the wheel closer to the centre (10mm) - using another wheel I cut the pivot out, cut off the pivot arm of the wheel that's in the motor now and welded in the 'new' pivot arm in the right spot. Then put the motor back together (a bugger of a job in itself - did this about 6 six times) and bingo it works a treat and sweeps exactly to the edge of the screen. The rest of the set up is 'mini minor' that's the cable (cut to length) tubes and pivots. To get the 'clapping hands' happening I simply 'reversed - re-upside down' the pivot on the drivers side. The tubes were resized and attached to the pivots. Normally there is a piece of tube between the motor and first pivot - but because of the way I mounted it the motor joins basically straight to the first pivot. I then made a wiper switch knob using a light switch knob - cut the shaft off - and attached it to an after market 2 speed switch with 'push' for the wiper washer. I have a video of the wipers working I'll see if I can post it. Don't actually have any step by step pictures. Hope this helps. Regards, Wasim

The sedan is being painted, stainless is all polished, badges have all been redone, chrome is back this week after being re-plated, back window and side glass has had all the scratches polished out and the interior is being redone - the shed has been cleaned up........................so what do you do while waiting for everything to come back ready for final assembly????????

Buy another car sounds like a great idea?

A Ute this time

I managed to get the 'quad headlight guards' back again (thanks Stinky)

The Ute came with a HR disc brake front end (not fitted) a 'worked' (still to be checked out) 161 with aussie 4 speed box.

Floors are not back - but the inner and outer sills need replacing and the front sub frame needs some rust removal but the back is in OK condition.

Plan is to lower it as much as possible (legally) and customise it with an 'out there' paint job?

But first things first - finish off the sedan by Christmas - registered and on the road - and then start on the Ute in the new year.

Wasim

I've been busy putting all the chrome back together

The small triangle windows are assembled - just need to put the glass in. So to are the rear tail lights - door handles are todays job.

Here's a picture of most of the stainless all polished.

And this is grill and front bumper - very pleased with how they have come up.

Geez Wasim, pass me the scalpel and mop my brow, talk about surgical presion!!

It all looks great, I like how you have used a number plate surround to mount the lights

Just a tip on the quarter vent windows, if you don't want them snapping shut on you when you pass 50 MPH make sure they are a little on the tight side to open and close

Like everyone else, I look forward to see it completed

Thanks Zulu,
I've pressed the rivet in the windows as much as possible and the windows are tight to open more out of not wanting the window to fall out! So it should be good - but thanks for the tip.

I still don't have the sedan back from the painters ??? (hopefully first week in March)

Have started collecting Tasman Rocket mags and bought a rotisserie ready for when I get stuck into the rust and sub frames etc.

Started to install the headers and triple SU's - the motor (it's not the motor I'll be using) is only there for trial fitting - had to cut the fire wall - and will build a 'box' and weld it in behind the last carby.

Gee, if you have a partner don't let them see how talented you are at cleaning! Looking good. Can you please let me know the company who did your metal finishing as I am only 5 hours from there and may use this as a second option.

If you're referring to the SU's - I polish all that stuff myself - I won't say it's 100% - but it's OK. I haven't finished yet - only the last carb (closest to the firewall) is anywhere near finished - I use an air powered die grinder with various polishing tips and have a set up with a big polishing wheel as well. I did all the stainless trim for the sedan myself. Takes hours but is worth it when it comes up well.

Hi Wasim,
Have you seen the February edition of Cruzin magazine? On page 35 there is picture of a Sth Aust. FE with the same type of quad headlight guards as yours that dates back to 1971.

Today I made a cardboard template of the cover to go inside the firewall to allow the triple SU's to fit

Transferred it to the metal sheet and cut it out

Formed the metal to the shape

And it fits

Next weekend - weld it all up.

Does anyone know the 'trick' to fitting the plate over the boot barrel lock? Spent hours trying to push that plate over the barrel to lock it in!!!!!

A lot of people have asked if the wheels are staying on the car? No their not - I have some 13 x 7's with chrome dress rings and restored stainless original hub caps.

Won't be doing anything for the 3 weeks - off to the UK.

Thanks, Wasim

The "trick" is to have the special pliers. I did mine with a set of long nose and lots of naughty words.  Dave

If your boots off I can get my fat hand in there to do the clip up with it off.
So anyone with normal sized hands should be right.

Thanks - I have long skinny fingers and still couldn't do it!

I tried pliers after reading the manual as well. Lucky you don't see it - because I would have scratched the living daylights out of it.

I guess I just have to 'drink 6 bourbon and cokes first'?

It may sound silly but your palm needs to be flat against the inside of the boot dont just stick jour hand in so your knuckles are facing the panel sounds weird but try it just get your arm in the right position.

Progress has been slow - but there is progress;
Rear Seat Belts in -
Rear Window Venetian Blind in -
Rear seat in -
Rear parcel shelf and speakers in -
All door locks, knobs etc in -
Bailey Channel cut and test fitting done -
Drivers side front and rear quarter glass in -
Next week - try and fit glass in drivers side doors?

Still having trouble finding 1st and reverse with the floor shifter - just more mucking around needed.

Not far from finished now!

HELP PLEASE?

I've put the glass in all the doors - fronts are perfect - but the back windows don't wind all the way up?

They're about an inch short of going all the way up and when I put my hand up inside the doors there is still a good inch of glass before the rubber seal even engages???

Any clues?

Thanks, Wasim

The rear channel isnt in backwards some how? the one that retains the rear 1/4 window or  its not fully pushed backwards did the rivet holes line up?

Or have you some how got EK rear glass?

pete

Title: Re: The Project - take 2
Post by: Wasim on May 26, 2013, 02:04:11 PM
Thanks Pete, the bailey channels are all clear - without the winder in, I can push the glass all the way up and the rubber seal sits flush in the door?

I know the FB / EK glass is shorter - I don't think I have FB / EK glass, the glass is the same ones that came out of the car and went off to be polished - don't know if the polisher had a FB / EK job going through the same time as mine?

I had a good couple of days to get some of the last remaining items done. I bought a Speco 'wobbly' stick gear shifter and installed it, no issues went straight in and after some small adjustments works fine. You can see the brackets, which are attached to the gearbox, in this picture.

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/IMG_0580_zpsf2f380c7.jpeg) ($2)

Now that I have 3 forward and 1 reverse gear - what was I supposed to do????? Drive the bloody thing for the first time around the block, a few times!

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/IMG_0584_zpsd785e154.jpeg) ($2)

I won't be putting the rest of the chrome etc on until the car has been back to the panel shop for some minor touch ups and a final cut and polish.

I put the Tasmans on - I just love how they look especially on a black car - The 1960's are back!

(http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff108/wasim59/IMG_0595_zps9ffd549d.jpeg) ($2)

There are just have some minor 'electrical' gremlins to sort out and put the underlay, carpet and front seat in next weekend.

Cheers, Wasim

Wasim

Fantastic job.

Period perfect. It would be great to call into the Eagle Rock Cafe just west of Ipswich.
Would fit in perfectly.

Cheers

Have spent this weekend putting the door trims in - made up dust and water covers for behind the trims - will post pictures of the inside next week

Happy with the look of the chrome on black

Plan is to have everything finished by the Australia Day long week end - and then try and get it registered.

Hi there Wasim,
That's a really cool cruiser.
I'm halfway through my project at the moment, and I'm curious as to what mods (if any) you had to do to fit the alloy wheels.
Do you have the standard brake drums, or discs, or what?
I'm at the crossroads as to what to do with mine.
Cheers,
Prof.

Hello Prof,
no modifications to fit the wheels other than when balanced the 'stick on' weights had to be used as the older type that are pushed between the rim and tyre were rubbing against the tie rod (only very slightly) and I had to modify how the caps were attached to the wheels as on the front they hit the bearing cap covers..

The car has a 179 HP motor mated to the old grey 3 speed box and it has EH front and rear ends fitted with standards EH drums and a VH44 power booster. All seem to works fine.

Regards, Wasim.

Thanks Wasim,
It looks like I have a problem with my alloy wheels.
They are completely flat where they sit against the (standard) brake drums.
The drums have 5 large "dimples" sitting proud between the studs.
Apparently there should be recesses in the wheels to allow the wheels to sit flush on the drums where the studs come through.
My standard steel wheels have this recess, whereas the alloys do not.
This will no doubt distort the drums when the nuts are done up tight, and may also damage the wheel centre.
Bugger! Back to the drawing board.
Cheers,
Prof.

Gday Prof....Had the same happen to me....I put a set of mags on my car for a little while, then had to get all the brake drums re-ground as they had warped....so ended up selling the great mags and back to the steelies and whitewalls.

Sounds a bit arrogant but this warping brake drums was common knowledge amongst us car kids back in the 70's . Funny how everything old is new again . Spacer plates are illegal but were factory std. equipment on some LC LJ toranas . Breaking traction is now hooning but was the only way to turn a torana or HQ-WB . Anyway that's enough reflection I"M feeling old.Cheers Haydn

MY PLAN WORKED

Today I took out a 2 year agreement on custom plates - silver on black (what else) 1959FC.

When I got home I announced to the wife what I had done and she uttered the words I wanted to hear - "you better hurry up and get the bloody thing registered" - OK I said, I'm going as quick as I can. I had to look away as the smile on my face was a dead give away.

That's a sweet, sweet looking FC. You've gotta be proud of the finished product.

I love the stark contract of the black/white combination , and the 8-ball theme.

Have you considered lowering it a fraction more?

Cheers,

Josh  :)

I actually had the rear leaf springs set 40mm lower when I got them reconditioned and in the front I have Pedders H/D lower springs???? Don't know why it isn't sitting lower???

Well done Wasim. Did it have to go for a roadworthy inspection or an identity check?

cheers

Hi Scott,
I had an identity check done first - problem was that the records didn't go back to when the car was last registered even though I gave them the last registration number as a reference????? So they passed the car!

Then it was around the Regency Park for the roadworthy and registration.

The car is amazing and I like how you showed some restraint in terms of the overall selection of period components used. I'm from Adelaide and all the family are there so I hope I get to see the car and you have certainly given me some ideas regarding the interior. I have an original black and white taxi. Well done mate 😎
