I'm thinking poo should be metallic purple, with a lavender tweed interior, 16" billets, fuel injection, maybe a blower.  :o :o

The ultimate poo mobile on drugs!   ;)

After 12 hours of sanding, main body of car is now mostly bare metal, and a new rear door skin is fitted.

Will post more photos tomorrow night (if my arms recover and I can hold the camera up!!)

And YES Wayne, I WILL TAKE A PHOTO OF THE POO MOBILE WHILE IT IS PAINTED IN GREY PRIMER, JUST BEFORE I REPAINT IT POO AND WHITE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Cheers,

I don't know why you persist with this delusion that grey is a colour  :-/

When people start to go grey they usually cover it up.  Cars don't like to be seen in primer either......

it looks clean and very nice, but why on earth are you spending this kind of money and painting baby sh*t brown when there is such a huge selection of two tone colours available

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: RET on March 13, 2003, 01:49:54 PM
Oh, Nicko, don't go there.  You will bring down upon your head the great wrath of the Poo-Mobile Club, a splinter group of the forum users who (like the "Grey Is A Colour, Why Are People So Unkind" crowd) are devoted to maintaining the original colour of their cars, despite the fact that certain fashions have moved on and a good thing too.

There are colour gangs in here and you don't want to stray into their turf.  Whatever you do don't start in on how you feel about Grey now. Learn from Napoleon and Hitler: never engage in a war on two fronts ;D

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: craiga on March 13, 2003, 08:46:27 PM
Nicko,

Colours are a very personal choice. I have owned the car for nearly 20 years in it's original Poo Colours, and believe it or not, I quite like it.  On this forum there are some guys who like originality, and some guys who like to modify. I'm somewhere in between, hence the red motor power, and thought's of lowering, but I would never change the colour.

Now leaving a car painted in grey primer and trying to polish it up: I'd never go there!!!!!  ;D

Cheers,

Craig.

P.S Paint job is a freebie courtesy of a brother who owns a spraypainters, so no big dollars spent or IMHO, wasted

Who's a lucky boy having a painter in the family? and hey - there's no such thing as a bad colour on FE's or FC's.
Good luck at the Nats.

by the way i do think it looks bloody nice as any car does with perfect panels and paint.i take my hat off too you for the effort you must have put into minor panel imperfections as i just would not have the patience

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: RET on March 15, 2003, 03:42:04 AM
Nicko,

You just don't get it.  Craig's car came out of the GM-H factory painted Corsair Tan and India Ivory, and that's the way he wants it to stay.  The originality is important to him (not to mention changing the colour means a new interior as well).

It's easy to say "try some of the new colors out there" when it's not you doing all the hard work rubbing back, preparing etc etc.  Especially if you don't have the patience for it. :-/

What "new colour" did you have in mind?  Tiger Mica?  That Candy-Apple Vomit colour that new Falcons come in? That would be a criminal act.

You mightn't mean to be insulting, but your first post sure came across that way.

Nicko,

No hard feelings from me. I could have painted it bright green or in that flip paint if I really wanted to, but chose Poo and White.

As with you, there are colours that I don't like: maybe your car is painted one of those colours.  I don't care if it is, it's an FE or FC and after all that's why we are all here.

Hope to show you the Poo Mobile in person one day.

Maybe I can talk you round.................;)

Cheers,

Craig.

Hey RET

Now who is getting insulting, a few people might like tiger mica / candy apple whatever(Don't know why), but each to his own and each to be able to voice his or her opinion.

I myself prefer the colours they came in be it poo, marron or heaven forbid even that non colour grey

Days of our Poo Update

Poo's body came home yesterday with RET lending a hand to begin refit last night. John Rappinette was round all today and helped out heaps as well.  It was fantastic to have the assistance of someone whose been there before. Thanks Guys, this is why clubs are so valuable to us enthusiasts.

I was up until after midnight painting sound deadener and detailing the boot area, but the results are worth it.

Interior is now almost fully refitted, as well as boot and rear doors rubbers. Some wiring for the radio, demister fitment, and other minor things to go. We also visited the panel beater today and the swinging panels are all repaired waiting for primer. I'll post some pics of the car tomorrow.

Hi John, the Poo will never be scared to get out there amongst it so if it cops a few stones chips on the way, so be it. Half the fun of the Nats will be getting there anyway, if I can stay awake  ;) Looking forward to seeing you and your car up there.

Cheers,

Craig.

Good to hear you will be driving it, can't see the use of building a car that you can't or are too scared to drive. Me and the FC will be there by hook or by crook.

Just think when your tired and cheesed off with putting the car back together of all the fun you will have in it.

Your a braver man then me doing a full rebuild(Or close enough to it) this close to the Nats, but I am sure it will be worth it.

See you all at the Nats

Jim,

Thanks for your interest.

Sorry about the lack of updates. I got carried away and stripped the engine bay and motor back to nothing, so I've been burning the midnight oil.

Engine and engine bay are now repainted and wiring all cleaned up. Front undercarrriage is repainted (just gloss black), front end, motor and brakes serviced, gearbox linkages adjusted, and minor gearbox oil leak fixed. New tyres fitted to rims, lots of other new bits and pieces fitted.  Should receive new engine sticker kit early this week from Ken, after fitting I'll post some new photos.

All panels are still at spraypainters but will (should!!) come home this week for final fitup.

Then off to get a new exhaust and wheel alignment.

Still on track to make the Nats........

Cheers,

Craig.

Rear view with new bar.

In the late '80's one of my "mates" gave me a short sharp jab to the rear with his HQ ute (ouch!!!). The Poo Mobile suffered what only seemed like minimal damage but the bumper, boot lid, and rear beaver were rooted. Boot lid will be new secondhand (thanks Ziggy), bumper is a secondhand rechromed unit from Slim FC parts Inc. and the beaver was repaired.

Getting close now, but at the point where I am relying on other people to get parts ready in time. Fit up should only take a couple of days but the chromers are mucking me round which worries me HEAPS. Fingers crossed for a pre Nats finish, but backup plan is a visit to Slim to get some S/H replacement chrome.

More updates towards the start of next week.

Cheers,

Craig.

Final chapter of the Days of our Poo  ;D

The Poo Mobile made it to the Nats, albiet with some fuel problems (courtesy of a rolled up page from a 1976 newspaper that was inside the fuel tank which lead to 17 stops during the trip to blow out the obstruction from the fuel line :'( ), a sticking starter solenoid which was repaired at the Isle of Palms, and a cracked exhaust manifold.

It also broke an accellerator clip on the side of the Gold Coast Motorway  :( but thanks to Alex (Custom_Fc) the clip was replaced and everything was OK.

We travelled around 2000 miles in 9 days and really enjoyed our time at the Nats.

Thanks to everyone for their comments throughout the past few months.

Cheers,

Craig.

G'day Craig , you certainly have a beautiful fc , I've been watching your rebuild over the last few months , it was good to see you finished it in time for the nationals, I went to the Sydney nationals and also plan to go to the next nationals. I read earlier that you have had the car for 20 years, how do you keep a car for that long?, I usually keep my car for 1 or 2 years max.(before getting bored with them) I took a 2 tone blue Fc to Sydney and now own a red fc( Fc number 5) with a grey motor and dragways. Also I would love to get a video of the nationals did you or anyone else take a video of the event that I can buy a copy of?    :)Tony Styles

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: craiga on April 26, 2003, 10:23:42 AM
Tony, Jim,

Thanks for your kind words.

I still have the car mainly because it was stored in the garage for so long - and to be honest I pretty much forgot about it between 1989 and 2001!!!! It was covered up and then wood and other junk piled around it, and company cars meant I had no use for it. I also didn't have the cash to register the FC and my other personal car so it just sat idle. After 20 years it is extremely unlikely I'll ever part with it, hence the effort to repaint and tidy up. Now it should last me until at least the 2023 Nationals ;D

I'll post some more completion shots after I have cleaned it up after the trip home. Below are some to show the early history of my ownership. No comments on the hair style are allowed ;)

Cheers,

Craig.

I also have enjoyed watching the rebuild. And what a result!!! I dig that car VERY much.
As for the photos, I wouldn't worry too much about anyone commenting on your hair, I think those shorts in the 1987 shot are what you should be worried about. MAN, they look tight. No wonder you had your legs crossed!!
Anyway, congrats on the HUGE effort.

Craig,
Really enjoyed seeing the restoration,The car is a credit to you. Good for you sticking with the origional colors.
Question:Was your car painted in Two Pac or Acrilic paint as i noticed that the bolt off pannels were done after the main body, this can often lead to a different finish of the gun unless it was Acrilic paint and you rubbed the whole thing down once back together.
Thanks Trent.

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: craiga on June 01, 2003, 09:40:20 AM
Hi Trent,

Glad you liked the photos.

The car is painted in two pack PPG paint. All removable panels were painted off the car, and all paint was mixed to formula and then applied within a 10 day period so no colour issues. As expected, there are some minor differences in the "peel" of the paint surface - the kind of thing only the owner or bored "expert" notices - but these will be removed when the car is blocked back with 2000 in about 4 months.

Polished it up today with some Mothers Glaze and it came up a treat. I'll stick some photos up tomorrow night after the show at Camden.

Cheers,

Craig.

Here's a picture taken at the recent N.S.W All Holden Day.

It's a very good side on picture which is a great base for some photoshopping.

Thanks to Jason Jones from the NSW Club for the photo.

Thanks Norm and Col for your comments.

The Poo name came about officially when this forum first started, but all my mates always referred to it as the Baby Poo Car. I think it's the best word to describe the colour.

The "Poo" colour, Corsair Tan, was actually used from 1956 until about 1960ish. The are two varieties, the 1956 version which is slightly pinker, and the second version, which appeared on the FC in 1959, which is more brown. I had a friend in the 1980's who had an FB that was exactly the same colour combination as mine and this is why I know it continued into the new model. I would say that his car was a very early one, and may have even been painted in Balm Enamel rather than the Duco Acrylic that was introduced in 1960.

There aren't a whole lot of FC's exactly the same as mine around, I've probably seen 2 others in the flesh, and seen pictures of about 3 others - but I'm sure there's some more. I remember chasing one through Bathurst in about 1987 but it disappeared in the back streets. You wouldn't think of buying a new car these days that was Poo coloured, but in the 1950's I'd reckon it wasn't a problem.

A simple rule applies here, if it's brown, YOU'VE GOT YOURSELF A POO MOBILE!

I've attached two colour swatches that show the difference between the two Corsair Tan's.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Craig.

btw   nice car

There is a Flaxen Tan listed which looks sort of similar to Corsair Tan, so maybe this was the colour on the FB? I do have a picture of his FB somewhere so I'll have to dig it out and check my memory.

My paint book indicates some Enamels did carry into 1960 - prefaced by the number 286 - until replaced by the Acrylics, prefaced with 586. Flaxen Tan is indicated as a 586 Acrylic, but Corsair Tan is a 286 Enamel.

Can anyone confirm if FB's were ever painted in Enamel? The paint book I have (GMH Balm Paint Guide 1950-1961) shows 13 colours for 1960 that have the 286 prefix, so maybe they were? And this may explain why some 1959 colours ended up on FB's.

Interesting question that hopefully someone can give us an answer to.

Cheers,

Craig

Colin,

There's only really heuristic evidence to say how many were made in each colour.  I don't believe Holden kept any records of how many were manufactured in each colour, and if they did, they've certainly never come to light.  Basically the collation of a lot of data about vehicles (both road-going and wrecks) has given something of an indication as to relative popularity.

However, even this is suspect.  Ken has documentation from a country Victorian dealership that kept scrupulous records of vehicles sold that shows that the more garish colour combinations sold in higher numbers than the relatively plain ones.  But, 45 years on, we see the grey, green and blue combinations in the cars that are still around.  This has led to the theory that perhaps the colour gives a clue as to the personality of the owner, and the likelihood of the car being kept well, as opposed to being driven into the ground.  Notwithstanding the colour aspect, the fact that so few Standards and commercial vehicles are still around is testament to how hard they were worked and how many of them 'went to Simsy's'.  So all of this is a very off-topic way of saying, no, there's not really any way of saying whether poo was common in its day or not.

Hope that helps,

RET

Robbzfc58,

Like RET says Ken McLean from the Vic Club is the absolute Guru on this sort of stuff. He has a comprehensive record of a large number of cars, but I'm positive even he couldn't tell you how many of each colour/scheme were built.

But knowing Ken, maybe he can............................ ;)

He has a photo album showing nearly every colour variant collected over 20 or more years. For those of you who haven't heard this before Ken is planning on writing a book on FE FC, so maybe some friendly peer pressure would get him going.  Sorry to dump you in it Ken, but I'm your first book buyer  ;D

And by the way, WELCOME TO THE POO CLUB!

Cheers,

Craig.

Hi Craig.
Yes, I can confirm FB's were painted in Enamel. My Standard is a very low numbered car FB215-108M. I cannot recall the paint codes off the top of my head & the car is stored at another shed, so I can't check right now. But, I can absolutely assure you it is not acrylic, but the same gloss black as the Black FC's. BEAUTIFUL!!
Hmmm, now that raises an issue. If Grey isn't a colour, what about Black??  ???

Hi All,
FBs were painted in nitro-cellulose lacquer until June 1960. G.M.H. then started painting the FBs in Dulon acrylic lacquer and called its new paint "Magic Mirror Finish"

Hi Guyzzz
Just talking to the Mrs . about the paints. She worked for Dulux paints for 13 yrs full-time and 4 yrs part-time when they were at Cabarita, "IF" they took their records with them when they moved , they may have records of supplies to GMH. Maybe if anyone was down Padstow way , they might be able to contact someone in the "Refinish" division . The fellow she knew left just after British paints took over.
    Just a Thought

If black is the abscence of colour and white is all colours combined, does that mean grey is half a colour?   :-/

Ret,

heuristic evidence?

???

Title: Re: Poo Apart
Post by: mcl1959 on September 18, 2003, 09:53:39 AM
As Craig has said - I have over 1000 cars on record and a simple search of each colour would give a ratio of what colour scheme is the most popular of what is remaining.  The problem lies with what RET has indicated.  A lucky find showed an entire 4 years of sales by a dealership in country Victoria which showed that the ratio of cars sold by colour when new, differs greatly to my data of what is left.  This led to my theory that (in general) the guys who looked after there cars very well to the extent that they survive today were conservative people who always garaged, always cleaned always serviced etc.  The logic then extends that conservative people also bought conservative colours such as grey and white which abound today although were not as common when sold in the 50's compared to the 2 tone blues and greens etc.

Does this help?   Ken

Evidence based on previous findings rather than explicit proof.

eg: When people believed the earth was flat, they really only had heuristic evidence that the sun would come up again tomorrow.  It came up yesterday and the day before, so it will come up tomorrow.
