Title: Tailshaft to diff connection
Post by: maroon-fc on July 28, 2010, 09:56:55 AM
G'day guys, this is probably a simple question for most. My tailshaft is attached to the diff by clips. How do they come off?  :P

Slightly off topic, what is the correct size bolt for joining the inside front guards to grill? I seem to have a menagerie.

Thanks in advance.....FC Mikey

Mikey,

Those clips must be U bolts, undo the nuts on the backside of the yoke, then slide them out.  The tailshaft should now slip forward and allow removal.

Cheers

Ed

Prior to the use of "U" bolts the tail shaft was held in place by Caps. The caps were held in place by 4 bolts which were removed on the Diff side of the Universal Flange. There were also soft metal plates with tabs, the tabs were tapped up against the bolt heads so that they did not become loose.
Wrap thin wire around the caps so that they do not fall off the universal joints when removing the tail shaft from the vehicle.
Refitting is the reverse of the above, ensure the gearbox is in neutral to allow aligning of the Caps into their correct position Universal Flange.

Mikey, re the guards, it should be the same ones that hold the guard to the skirts, 7/16 AF head with a screw type thread.

re the tailshaft, as Bob has said, undo the bolts & the clip will come off with them, then just should slide forward & away, if it's an original diff & uni, should have no U bolts, just 4 7/16 head bolts
