Title: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: earlyholdenfan on June 01, 2010, 09:01:58 AM Not sure if this is the right section to post this, but......
I am looking for a trailer made out of the rear cut of an FE FC ute, I have seen a few floating round on here but if anyone has one and does not need it any more I am looking. Alternatively if anyone has a rear cut from a ute they do not need, I can make one from I would also consider that. Location not that important I am happy to travel Matt Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on June 01, 2010, 03:24:32 PM I've got a rear cut but in Sydney.
was going to make a trailer, then a lounge, then... never got around to it. ive cut it down the sides but not across the frame rails in prep for a lounge.. could weld it back together no dramas. I could build it to a rolling rego-able unit. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: earlyholdenfan on June 01, 2010, 06:36:39 PM PM sent
Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on November 25, 2010, 08:41:53 AM After getting some other jobs finished off, and after storing the ute cut for about 5 years, I can finally make a start. Here is a pic of my Dad looking very happy at the prospect of the ute leaving his shed... Why does he always look so happy when I move my stuff? I decided that a good looking ute trailer needs good proportion. With the wheel centred in the body, the tub rail needs to be moved forward to the existing door jamb. This is pretty much perfect. The bonus is better looks, longer load area (6 foot) and better weight bias for improved towing... a good thing considering it's a trailer. so out came the grinder and I moved the rail roughly to it's new position. A few more cuts and it can go further another 2 inches to tidy up the forward section. Cheers Ed (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs696.snc4/63589_477953122431_692052431_5716430_4173455_n.jpg?download) (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1196.snc4/154810_477953142431_692052431_5716432_2201075_n.jpg?download) looking better already. regards fatboy Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on December 07, 2010, 07:57:36 AM yeah I've noticed that Fat, it's got an HR diff at the moment which is going to be changed out for a trailer axle.. I haven't given it a whole lot of thought otherwise. I did manage to find some 2 inch lowering blocks though.. so I may need to fab up some plates and get some long u bolts. I need to do something soon, as the draw bar will need to be set up at the right height. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on December 09, 2010, 08:48:22 AM I started to make some filler pieces after the tub rail was moved forward 7.5 inches.
much better proportion. just tacked in for now... Im about to cut the jambs out so this rail will help prevent the body from flopping about otherwise. Cant wait for my new plasma cutter to arrive. Well Done, keep the progress pics coming. ;D ;D ;D
Red Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on January 18, 2011, 10:02:52 AM Hello,
just a little update on the trailer build. blanked off the spare wheel door, got a plasma cutter and started to cut things up. (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs264.snc6/179247_501172232431_692052431_6085074_5548755_n.jpg?dl=1) the jambs were cut off and the front end is being tidied up in preparation for a new front wall. (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs036.snc6/166647_501172992431_692052431_6085095_5506136_n.jpg?dl=1) the subframe legs were rusty, so they were chopped off and a frame can now be made. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on January 28, 2011, 08:35:34 AM So i got a little busy and added a drawbar to the trailer.
the original subframe legs were cut out due to rust and the frame welded to the legs. An additional cross member will be placed at the front leading edge, and welded to the inner sill which has had a plate stitched on for strength. I fitted the front x-member (I suppose it's called) and it gives me a mount for the front sheet and the draw bar is solid. the x-member is only 2.0mm wall thickness so it's adequate but not overly heavy. The underfloor area will be sheeted up and provide a good lockable area once complete. CHeers Ed (http://s3.postimage.org/1asm9a5ms/IMG_3439.jpg) ($2) (http://s3.postimage.org/1asuiyw3o/IMG_3438.jpg) ($2) Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 07, 2011, 05:08:47 PM Despite a little heatwave in Sydney, I managed to sheet up the underfloor area which should make a nice lockable area once the trailer is complete. very well thought out with the cut & shut, looking forward to seeing the completed trailer. Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 08, 2011, 08:16:05 AM Gary,
thanks, it's required a lot more thought than I originally anticipated too! the trailer is being built for "earlyholdenfan", I'm sure he wont mind if I trailer it down to a club meeting after it's done. :D Otherwise I hope he trailers it about alot and we get to see it out and about. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: collecta on February 08, 2011, 11:11:14 PM Nice work Ed
Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 14, 2011, 02:33:08 PM Progress: started sheeting up the front side. Will need some bracing behind it to stop the panel from flexing.
the top rail was damaged and rusty. It was cut out, a piece of SHS bent to shape and welded in to regather strength. The panel will now be laid over the top and joined to the top panel in a similar fashion to the sides. Looking great, are you going to make provision for a spare on the front panel Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 14, 2011, 04:00:38 PM Gary,
Funny you mention that, I was thinking a "continental kit" on that front wall would be nice. Ive built a wheel carrier for a 4WD trailer before and could do similar but with the structure behind the wall. Being a trailer I have been careful not to build too much weight into it. One of my key design criteria was to keep it light. so far so good. pic of 4WD wheel carrier on a drawbar mount... adjustable for different wheel sizes... looking at it now I should have added a gusset behind it. it was fish plated though. The 'continental kit' is a great idea... What colour will the trailer be painted - maroon? ;) :) cheers, jack Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 14, 2011, 04:12:13 PM Hey Jack, Primer beige at this stage. ;) Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 14, 2011, 04:14:43 PM hmm I'm getting carried away.

tacking the front wall in now, have reinforced the forward tub rail and built a frame to support the front wall. Using the round tube allows me to roll the edges over and get a nice edge... I couldn't work out how else to do it without specialised sheet forming tools. things are coming together nicely, just need to finish up the welding. Must have been some accident :o with tyre marks up over the front ;D Regards Weddo Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 21, 2011, 01:05:02 PM :D :D
nice one Weddo. I was wondering if anybody would notice. I store my sheet on the garage floor... don't have the luxury of a big shed. lol Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: JB on February 21, 2011, 02:26:58 PM Ed just builds them tough... not even a dint on it after the accident LOL
Seriously though, nice work mate! Its coming along very nicely... I have some door gaps that need attention when you are finished. ;D ;D Cheers JB Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 21, 2011, 02:33:18 PM thanks JB,
Door gaps are easy. Fit to get the best panel alignment, then cut, re-weld and file back the edges to get the gap right... at least that's how I do them these days... well worth the effort. The only way to get good gaps. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 25, 2011, 10:38:37 AM After what seemed an eternity of tacking, welding and filing.
the front wall is attached, the top panel made and the front edge of the tub repaired (not in pics). I stood back and thought it almost looks the shape of a hot rod cowl. the pics show the progress made. The next step for me is to etch, prime and wire it up before Matt takes it home to finish up the body and paint it. Will hook it up behind my car and takes some pics for a better perspective. Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: EffCee on February 26, 2011, 04:40:37 PM Ed,
Fantastic work on that trailer. Loved the idea of moving the rear window frame area forward to make the tub more useable. Excellent work! Keith Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 28, 2011, 08:36:43 AM Thanks Keith and Stinky,
I got busy again and primed the trailer and then wooded out the interior. it's only temporary, but all the wood can be used as templates. I may re-do the forward panels as I got lazy and thought it would be the same size as the rear.. but it's not, it rises half an inch... never noticed that before. I am after 4 x dual circuit tail light bulb holders.. can anybody help? ;D I hope this thread has been interesting and maybe of assistance to anybody else wanting to build a trailer. One more pic to come an that will be behind the tow car. after that I'm hoping Matt keeps us updated with the final paint and fit ups. Cheers Ed Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Maco on February 28, 2011, 01:34:41 PM Ed,

John Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: Ed on February 28, 2011, 01:42:09 PM John, It sure would, Matt's sourcing a bar as we speak, I am sure he will be needing some of your seals. please post a pic of your seals... sorry I have missed any other discussion on these. It is just as Ed posted in the piccies above so far, But still a long way to go till any fresh paint can be added and I am still chasing a tailgate for it! Ed and I worked on getting to a useable state, so I could take a drive up and bring it home to work on it further, from here on in it will be slow and steady - tidy of some body work and finish off a few little extra touches and custom bits, then finally paint it "purple" to match the wagon LOL M@ Title: Re: FE FC Ute trailer Post by: EffCee on April 05, 2011, 09:39:21 AM Ed,
A great looking trailer, well done, I enjoyed watching the build on this, I love your idea of moving the rear parcel tray forward too to make it look mory "Factory" Matt, Can't wait to see it all finished Keith |
