Title: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on May 01, 2010, 05:37:54 PM
Finally bit the bullet gutted the old girl a fortnight ago getting back into it .
My plan this time around is to build a stealthy sleeper going back to full stock interior rubber mats the lot re cad plating everything no chrome where it should not be sunvisor rear venitians i want stock as a rock except B&m shifter.
I am running a RB26 R32 GTR Skyline motor, 2 Speed powerglide heavily worked over, vl turbo diff.

Heres what it looked like a fortnight ago. no rust well inner sills should have been done the first time so they are getting done this time around hopefully i dont ruin the NOS sill i fitted 10yrs ago.
Rb30 is out front ends out diffs out fuel tanks out car is gutted.

I was very hesitant doing another re build as the car was pretty smick but was not to the standard i wanted.

heres what it looks like today

Also got stuck into it today fitted a new tunnel

Cut whole rear floor out and i picked up a pullmax P1 machine so i made beading dies and have made a  whole new rear floor section come up very nice.

I cut a alloy semi drop tank as i do not want fuel surge this time around but will be matt black no standout items here.

Heres the new box  dellow bellhousing full manulised turbo 400 input shaft B&M large pan, some weird heavy duty clutches 3000rpm convertor aftermarket flex plate.

Also the brains turned up the new Haltech 2000 series only just released this way i can have staged boost all my thermo out puts looks nice

And last item i promise is i am fitting a new 4 link rear end i cut my brackets on my waterjet machine had to do a foreign order on it sooner or later

I want it done asap but with work and a young family this is gunna be a long project.

Far out Pete, grass won't be growing under your feet! I haven't seen your car for some years, but I really liked it. Are you sticking with the same colours?

            Cheers Glenn

Yep same again (the wife said why pull it apart if you are not changing the colour they dont understand)
I love them colours for some reason. They are the  factory colours for my car the only change will be the eh sunvisor is going to get shorter again it grabs lots of wind if.
I am chasing red and black full interior again ect even if someone wanted a tidy grey velour interion with VT trim inserts all done by eastside custon trim i will swap them Prefer late 59 with pattern embosed in top of seat but any good parts will be ok?
I have to go shopping under Nasco,s house for somne bits.

Well made a bit more head way lately.

Pat gardener front end should be here this week.
Found a VL Manual rack which i didnt think were so hard to find.
VE 298mm rotors and new callipers showed up.
VS rear slotted discs turned up.
Found an original radio in mint condition.
bought a front mount intercooler to run instead of the water to air one.

ordered rubber repro floor mat out of as EK auto so i hope it clears the waddington hump.

diff is bolted in ready for the move to the new house.

will be going slow while i build a new shed.

Hi Pete,
Nice retrotech you got goin on......I got a question regarding your steering.
What sort of rack are you putting in?.....I am having trouble putting in a racknpinion steering setup due to lack of room for clearance.

Hey Pete,

Looks like it is full on at your place at the moment. Could you do a step by step on the gardner front end fitting for others that are considering this mod.

Dean.

Well after weeks of moving i finally have the cars in a new shed just waiting on the new shed to be built 28 X 9 X 4.2 with office and mezanine. waiting on council now.

Pat gardener front end turned up 3 days after i had to move it with no front end  :-X

bolted front end in and put the rack in but i cant seem to get it short enough to align the wheels will ask v6 conversions before i chop anymore off the rack ends.

not really put it on the back burner for a couple of weeks will get motor mounted ect first.
its pretty damm close i cannot believe how much lock they get on their front end very impressed.

sits nice and low i have another drama put VE rotors on with callipers will have to run spacers to get the wheel to clear the calliper the disc is nearlly flush with the back of the walkinshaw spokes? im running the VE to VS big brakeupgrade kit off e bay.

I wondered about the big brake kits and whether they would be a pain in the bum or not.

After familiarising myself with a number of threads I now declare this to be all Pedro's fault  :o ::)

Noice shed fella. Is that a ford there i see, was a friend over helping out ha ha. Thanks for some of your posts. After reading Pedros resto from front to back, I am thinking I will be saying for next few years "well, finally think I am getting somewhere" or words to that effect! I now have RB30, the loom, computer, 2 gearboxed (one recently reco's), already have a Salisbury V8 diff (statesman), HR front end and other bits and pieces.

Still I think about how a Lexus v8 would go in her! or another motor I really like is the 3.2ltr all alloy v6 in my rodeo, which pulls like a train!

Sometimes I still think I should bore out the 132 and fit 149 pistons or something. But go real mod in the steering, brakes and gearbox department, like a 6 speed manual...or a 12 port setup on a 202, I dunno. I have plenty of thinking to do. Plenty of rust and chassis work to do in meantime though!

Post by: FCRB26 on December 18, 2010, 09:00:19 PM
I own the territory its new turbo model flash tuner exhaust done bigger injectors absaloutley flies.

Also got my business so i have 2 new sr5 hiluxs and a izuzu truck
also got stashed a 2nd owner HT prem with VS SS running gear in it and a EH prem sedan

Dont worry about the motor yet get rid of the rust and if you are still sane then worry about the motor.

Nice shed Pete, looks like you need an extension though you've already filled it ;), in the photo above you have with the RB30 you have the intake pipe and air filter setup fitted neatly in line, there is no way mine will fit like that as the VL pipe that goes over the top of the engine is too long, is yours a different one or did you modify it?.

Yes I know, my missus has been telling me that for years ::) ;D ;D, at least you can learn from my mistakes though and save yourself a bit of grief, if I can help in any way just ask me or Pete, he's pretty cluey and has helped me out with a few problems in the past as he has done all this before(when he was 16 :o).

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again

Pedro all stock except for the pod filter adaptor all that it is is a plate to the shape of the air flow metre with a bit of 3 inch staino welded on it any supercheap pod filter fits only one word of warning if you hold it bouncing off the rev limiter for 10 or more seconds being a dick the whole lot falls off engine dies and you look like a fool needs a support off the air flow metre so it doesnt fall off.

Wait till you see the new shed i have gone overboard to the max work is paying so who cares 28 x 9 x 4.2 mezanine air con office got a recod repco hoist bought a linishall linisher bought speedwerx english wheel shrinker stretcher have my big anvil with dollies roller drawer cabinets fully decked out with internet which is also logged into the water jet at work so if i want to cut something i program it at home and its automatically on the machine at work for the boys to cut.. getting excited its set up for all my mates and father to build rods and toys so they can all enjoy it....

Pedro ill make you a intake thingo and send  it up no charge they are pretty simple///

Thanks for the offer Pete and I don't want to seem ungratefull but mine came with a pod air filter setup, it's a bit long but I think if I cut it down a bit and modified the bracket everything should just fit, I gather you just left out the rubber hoses and squeezed the air flow meter into the plastic section.

Hey Hoon and Pedro,

Have few questions and opinions wanted

With my Skyline motor (RB30) it has the oil return line and the water one with the threads in block. if i was to turbo it, I think a ball bearing turbo would be the go, but what i wanted to know ... when you have turbo, youd put a oil cooler on hey and then go back to motor last, does this require a valve of any sort? I'd love to have a rb26 with its superior bottom end.

Next question, if I was gunna go for a high torque motor, non turbo, a high lift cam and better springs would be the go hey, but i dont think bigger injectors would make much difference on a stock motor. a cold air box would make more difference I reckon and better chipset???

I was also thinking of doing an IRS conversion  :-\ but can see this as being a lot of work, but i have to cut most of the car anyway lol so I was thinking a superior setup would be out of a jag but expensive, but maybe an aftermarket one with close track could be the go??? (I'm starting to sound like pedro, this was suppose to be a stock build lol).

ive heard vn are crap.

Any info would be great. I have to lower compression ratio if i was to turbo it. Caold you foresee any dramas Hoon if I went for a mild 9-12 pound boost jobby???

I'd love a cold air intake Hoon or intake setup and I'd pay to get you to do one. Gotta sort out engine mount later too and front rack. I'm thinking of doing a custom air cond with rudimentary crome pipes ha ha into the cabin.

Sorry I've asked so much and uze are so busy.

Cheers

Dean.

Jeez lotsa questions
first no you dont use a oil cooler theres a bung and its oil pressure you feed from there to the turbo then it dumps into another bung that goes into the sump.
As for modifying atmo mine ran a GTS cam crow double valve srings Pod filter cannot go lumpier or bigger injectors without computer mods aftermarket is best yes injectors  and cam and computer will make a lot of difference and a good exhaust.
IRS ass ends think out of the square i know of a FJ in sydney registred running a supra IRS rear end silvia or skyline would be a close fit.
Jag is too big and old skool commodore is too wide will upset geometry if you chop it.
If doing a turbo conversion you can use a decompression plate or only run %psi or less but lowering would be the best.

Run a rear mount rack avoid front mount they are horrible.
Get into it and get rid of the rust use a waddingtons tunnel off e bay no mucking around easy fit.

Post by: fe350chev on January 11, 2011, 08:56:26 PM
thanks mate. all noted. Yeah ive been researching various IRS's including the ones you have said. trying to find track widths and setups that may be suitable.

Finally some small progress

Sump is finished and fitted back on the engine i even remebered to put the pick up on which after a few sherberts is something i would normally forget.

Sat the engine in and how about that it clears the pat gardener front end just need to cut the engine mounts out now.

Got the FE out of the shed ready for a blue slip and the drivers wheel cylinder starts leaking so all cylinders are coming out to get re sleeved drum brakes really annoy me working on them but should not be too long and she will be crusing.

i spoke to an engineer today, he said a turbo rb30 is out of question for me now. but an rb26 if its 2.6 litre is fine with new rules working on weight of 1060.

do u know if lexus v8's use same gearbox as supra?

Or you could do what I am going to do... Queensland engineer, drive/truck it to QLD get it registered, drive back home and change over the rego to VIC. No RWC required as long as its got rego. Legal to go to 5ltr. Or 4ltr with a turbo for FE/FC

yeah my local vicroads said if i got any car from interstate, as long as it had rego there and im changing it over, they dont need to inspect it at all despite any mods. so I guess thats what Fevan is talking about. im warming to the idea of a smaller v8 though, sounds good and more room under the bonnet.

Well after a new baby and a whole heap of other stuff going on with work  i made the decision to send the FC away after nearly 2 years of little progress i want it done for the nationals .

So i have sent it to  someone i can trust (hopefully) to do the major chassis work as its going to be full a full on build.
I took the car to a reputable builder monday cant let too much out theres some wild mods coming its way watch this space i guess.
I have been doing all the fiddly bits here and there
finished making my own version of under dash guage mount so it covers the hoses/cables ect just to make sure i can still weld came up tidy very happy with it.
not bad for an hrs work in between jobs.

There will be a flush mounted tubes welded either side above the slot for a countersunk head to do up the dash panel.
looks pretty close to the original one but smoother.

You have no idea how bad i feel that im having a lot of my car built by someone i dont really know but the fact is work and familly are more important at the current time.
work is too volatile with the current climate so the more i keep my customers happy the better off i am. A lot of people dont have work  at the moment and a select few companys have been copying my designs trying to undercut me.
the company i have doing the work is doing an EK  sedan with a LS6 in it and the work is  extremelly well engineered and quality so im pretty happy ill get what i want.

Progress
In 1 week they have achieved more than i have in 2 years and cut most of the work out as we are going a different route.
As they are working they are emailing me profiles and i am cutting on the waterjet and express shipping parts overnight
New rails cut and sent.
Some massive stuff about to happen the next few weeks
Stay tuned.

I know its cheating but its the only way i will see it done.
works quite well as i see cutting parts and pieces as a job for a customer it has to be done so ill keep that frame of mind.

yes that is a bare can in that back end.
And a lot of work repairing them rails laying on the ground in a million pieces.

Here is the ride  height with the bag deflated it will be 50mm off the deck (or 100mm dialled in when the Engineer looks)
The new Rails i cut are getting installed.
The New style of bag has a new design shock in it so we will get 300mm of travel no speed humps will worry me now.

These arent my rims just exact diameter and tyre size.

Thanks, Now I have a big sad face and kicking my shoes in the dirt. Coming close to divorce over the whole commodore stripping thing for parts I DARE NOT even try to go as far as an LS1. I have heard they have more problems than the 5lt too

although....

Well some more progress
I worked my arse out on saturday as i was allowed out and didnt have to work so i went down and got on the tools for the day.
Drove the FE down pretty croozy run down the freeway after a 50KM detour due to a servo being on fire so 1/1/2 hrs later i made it there without a hitch the FE,s first highway run.
Turned up had a look at the FC no floors no boot no nothing shes a sad looking old gal.
completlly stripped a diff ready to be fitted with goodies.
Cut all the bracketry ect off it. i allready had a narrowed diff but it needs shitload out of it now im running 285 tyres on the rear with a full dish.
I gave Laurie a hand to square the rails up and to then square the rails in the body and centre them as its a very flimsy sardine tin at the moment.
But i was sent a pic today they have one tub done with really nice beading rolled into it its now installed and they were fitting the second today.

Getting excited floors should be in this week wait till you see what we have planned i helped with the design it will have flat floor from the base of the sill so it will have a channel in the car with a false floor on the sides to run computers and fuel pump concealled.
Also laurie has designed a full fabricated triangulated 4 link i am cutting out and welding all the componets together keeping the costs down really love how i allowed to have a lot of input.

Awesome progress mate. Make a whole template and I'll take one (and a divorce)

Your car would look so much better with a LS1 but oh well that old pushrod dinosaur will have to do..  ;D

I thought max ci for an FC based on curb weight was 317 making an LS1 too big to fit?

Apparentlly its to the discretion of the engineer that ek in the pic has a LS3 in it.

We are powering along
Last night recieved a cut list . started at 4am had it all cut and welded packed and shipped by 9 they should have it by lunch time.
Waterjet makes things so much easier and doing some real cool stuff.
I made the 4 link brackets this morning added some nice detail by welding one over the top of the other for detail and strength.

Lucky i bought a new CNC press to play with. I have had it a month and its worked for 5 days >:( very pissy waiting for parts from portugal for a 100K press.
All fixed now tho and powering along just program an angle and it does it perfect and it has a fully automated back guage so you just type in the fold size and it does it too no more marking out.

Well im on a roll again this morning i couldnt sleep so started at 4am again and got the ashtray finished its going to have boost and RPM in there.
I was going to use a commodore vaccum actuator out of the heater . So when the car starts the guages flip out the ash tray.
I had to modify the dash a fair bit.
Will fit it when the car comes back.
I used an old FC half cut i have at home to get the angles so they look directlly at you.

Ordered the wheels yesterday
10 week wait was pretty disapointing  from the states
The price of tyres was ridiculous 285/45/18,s they wanted near $600 each for bridgestone and for Falken directional speed rated  275/40/18,s was $180 a tyre so i know what im running.
Plus the hub cap adaptors we have to sort  them out
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/covered_smoothie.png)

Took another day off work to go and work on the car tommorow cant wait to see the progress.

Waynos of course it would work.
its all about rolling diameter in your case run a 45series tyre and I think you will find its the same rolling diameter as a stock 13inch rim with 75 series tyres.
My fe has 16s with 45series tyres seems fine.

Another waterjet special
All assembled by me drawn by Laurie
Loved the radiuses till i had to friggin roll all them bits around them.
I tacked it all with the tig checked 5 million times it hadnt moved sprayed all the internals with weld thru primer.
Mig welded all together no distortion whatsoever so im very happy with todays efforts.
Next will be fuel tank they will help design and im fabricatimg it
It will have internal swirl pot and internal pump to prime the big bosch 044 pumps i have.
i wont stop till that dyno sheet says 500 RWHP. ;D

Damm long weekend not much has happened except i sniffed out a few bargains.

Been wanting aftermarket exhaust manifolds but decent Tomei or trust ones are over $1200 found a set on ebay brand new in newcastle for $350 so cheering .
He also had a fully reco,d (with reciepts) balanced set of N1 trubos for a GTR with larger  exhaust flapper balanced steel turbine wheels and match ported exhaust to the tomei manifolds .
So that 500 RWHP is looking achievable 450 on a safe tune.
Bought a new gates triple layer cam belt and new tensioner pulleys to be on the safe side.
Will fit a JUN aftermarket oil pump to keep it all happy as well.

Very annoyed with the Dellow bellhousing Its been bolted up to the motor for over 12 months.
Well i didnt notice but i went to fit the starter motor and its over 10mm off centre so the starter motor will not fit in the hole.
Also there is no way to do up the convertor bolts so i will have to cut a access hatch in the bottom sandwich plate to get the bolts in.
I rang dellow this morning they really did not give 2 shits
His suggestion die grind out the sandwich plate. I said why would you do that wouldnt the starter not mesh with the flywheel properlly.
pretty much said do you know someone who can weld alloy after that.
So lucky me guess im tigging up the holes and re machining the bit where the head of the starter goes.
Just annoying i have to fix something i paid top dollar for its not a matter of filling the holes as alloy needs good penno so i have to cut from the side into the treads and fill it from the side so i get full penno and the tapped hole will have a clean thread.

I should have bought a spun billet one from melbourne.

All 4 link brackets were cut and delivered so we should have an arse end it very soon.

when i got my ute it had stripped holes in starter with nuts on the other side.
half the car was like this by the way......
anyway i welded the holes and retapped em,
but hell ya shouldnt need to be doin that sort of stuff on a new one
building the sides up too ,
poor bugger......
i would be very irate too.
i work near dellow i want to go abuse them for ya..........
cant believe they didn't wanna help at all.

What a Day today absaloutley flat out.
hot as hell
but glad i had the day off achieved a heap today.
I assembled the parts for the 4 link i cut the other day Laurie did half of one of the rear bag mounts thru the week and i finished them both off and we squared all the brackets up in his diff jig.
After 500 measurements we had everything spot on i peeled off some smick welds on the diff he must trust me letting me go to town on all the 4 link brackets.
We ended up offsetting the pinion as apparentlly you never set up a diff centre dead centre offset to one side 4 degrees and down 3 degrees which i didnt know.
We wanted to make the diff look central so the pinion is offset more than 4 degrees but he assures me this is fine.

the pinion angle stayed dead straight right thru nearlly 400mm of articulation so i guess he did his homework.
We measured up fuel tank today so this is my time to shine im assembling in in the next few weeks while he is at SEMA worked out roughlly 65 litres off our guesstemations.
We also measured and have worked out the exhaust 3 inch with high flow cat and high flow muffler and a nasco deflector modified.

Thanks

The floor pans going to be a work of art as will be the tunnel and the rear shock tower.
They reccessed the engine another 80mm so the firewall has been chopped i want it to handle so the weight distribution should be about right now.

Heres a sneak peak of the bags sitting in there.
I have ordered all my bends for the exhaust so it will have 3 inch single system high flow cat and high flow muffler all S/S thats my job friday.(i think)
Or assemble the crossmember.
I could get use to having fridays off thats 3 weeks in a row loving it.
I just received tommorow's cut list for the brackets to hold the upper of the air bag system.
Heres how i get the files with all clerance issues drawn in Laurie is a whizz on cad.

Well i think i pulled off the most arsiest pick up to date.
i have been chasing 4 mint hub caps after minding my own business on sunday sitting at the lights. I looked next to me and here was 4 FC rims with alloy dress rims and 4 hubcaps sitting in old mates ute so i changed lanes and did the big chase after about 10km of flagging him down he stopped.
I ask him what he was doing with them he said he had just bought them from a garage sale had been under a house for 30 years.
Long story short swapped him for 4 fc rims with good tyres and 4 shitty EH hubcaps woohoo

And i cut my exhaust flanges today ready to fit friday

yeah yeah ill get there kids party tommorow maybe sunday for your diff.
we all day doing the bloody exhaust up over the diff got it all welded and grained looks good and really smooth flowing lines was tight but has all the clerances and wont rub anywhere not bad for 3inch pipe.
Waiting on front and rear muffler  going to run 2 as it will be friggin noisy and a high flow cat.

Air bags and diff installed.

Pic of 18x10 rear rim with still 50 mm of clerance so i could have fitted 12,s o well. (He has a selection of very gay looking rims for templates.)

Also we are running 2 air tanks and 2 compressors in either rear quarter panel should look smick and have heaps of air
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/20121012_141743_zpsc5fed17c.jpg)
Compressor will mount on top of air tank on a fandagle looking bracket.
Getting there.

15mm clerance off the top control arm about the same off the chassis rail  with bags deflated at its lowest point
then 25mm off the rear rail section.
tons with  it at ride height.

rear muffler will be a 4 inch straight thru.

my grainer didnt show yet i used lauries its good  suhner brand.

beats the old graining mop on a barrel grinder.

Your car would look so much better with a LS1 but oh well that old pushrod dinosaur will have to do..  ;D
Just found out its a roller engine (referring to lifters) and that I can also stuff in a 355 crank without any machining or fuss. So old maybe but has some goodies on it compared to other Holden 308 blocks

Anyone have a 355 crank laying round? ;D

.Yes they were albeit a cheap roller set up (the rockers are pressed steel from memory).Harrop made the 5.7L cranks for them for HSV and they fit straight into the late model block. If you try to put them in the early red block you have to do a lot of clearancing to make them fit....but it was worth it ;D....

Well not much has happened this week.
the floors and trans tunnel are getting done this week coming.
I made the rear bar one piece what an absaloute bastard to get it all square and the radiuses change from one section to another so a lot of welding hammering with a dolly and checking with a profile template i have it looking good.
I clamped and tacked it to my 16mm work bench and worked from the top down i cut the stepped section off so it looks like i knew what i was doing.
Just got to sort out the brackets as to how i am going to mount it .
I think i will waterjet some nice new brackets like originals and drill and tap my new rails.
Unsure how to fix to the bar yet i think i will make a small top hat section out of 4mm and weld it inside the bar and bolt my brackets off that (like an EH) as i am not going to run overiders want the clean look.

i got a spare front bumper to do this
but always think not yet, when  i look at it.
the centre is a much different profile hey
not that a bit of beating worries me.
its the price of chrome
or rechroming  the chrome
i wonder if it would be cheaper just to grind all the chrome off
finish it in bare metal...............
hmmmmm
 thinkin about it now
would it be cheaper just to fab a new bar?

So i did a morning run and dropped them all off .
Dont stress there is a 3mm channel welded in face down under where the seat bolts so the seat holds the front false panel in and the rear ones we havent thought that far yet..

floors done tho happy as a pig in poo ..

If it wasnt for the chop shops Lack of respect i suppose you could put it for old cars it would not have been at this stage.

This type of build can only portray a positive image for our sport/hobby. I have just read an article about a Chop Shop employees truck in the latest Street Machine mag and you're right, they do good quality stuff.

hes painting the FC so should be a good paint job.

Pete what about the weak point [crown wheel and pinion] Keysbrough diffs in VIC  were making them a few years back and made for  an unbreakable final member having said that the Commodore turbo boys have put over 500 HP through a standard diff .....FC427.....

A bloke that come into work has a RB26/30 combo with a 5 speed with billet input shaft and os gigen gear set stock vl turbo diff.
He has blown a few centres but is making 975hp at the rear wheels so my 550hp roughlly should be fine.
Mine is auto which is less stressful and no transbrake.

He recentlly had the flywheel explode taking out the back of the engine, stuffed a 2500 dollar clutch and sheared the input shaft off, the remains of the flywheel went thru the bellhousing, floor, and parts were stuck in the dash. he was very lucky not to loose his feet..

I need to give some recognition to Shane Pike Films for the pan shot of the inside of the FC.
Hes a young fella in business taking pics of cars for people.
he also has been editing films from cars shows.

He tells me today he is going strong in business  and sponsoring a race team...

How will the weight of your FC be?, do you predict it to be much different from before you started?

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on November 23, 2012, 05:57:43 PM
Im predicting 1240KG or less

should be lighter than before? maybe.
Another big day let loose on my own again as the boys were busy on other projects
all the sills are tied into the inner sills and i got no distortion very very happy with my efforts today everything fell into place.
I made the sill flow at the rear away from the floor.
The front has a very nice radius on it now.
I re built the multi layer section at the front so the mudguard has a really nice section to land on (forgot finished photos)

Got to agree all the crap that the kids(and some adults) say these days, we are becoming to Americanised. Us Aussies are loosin our heritage, political correctness has a lot to answer for, how did we get onto this subjet anyway? isn't this about what is going on with the rebuild. Which by the way is looking fantastic, must be over the moon with the way it is going, you should spray the floor in clear so all that great work can be displayed for all to see.

New billet fuel rail and some 1000cc injectors should keep her happy...

1000cc injectors is a little overkill isn't it?

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on November 27, 2012, 04:24:14 PM
A little overkill but not much
we went for a top name brand that supposedlly idle excellent where as the cheap ones can give a rough idle
My dyno man is pretty switched on.
He said 800cc would probablly do but we went 1000cc as the computer does all the talking to them and they only get what fuel the computer tells them anyway.

I have been talking to him about some bigger HP figures and this way its one less thing to change.

I have to purchase another fuel pump so we will run 2 bosch 044s

Pete

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: GMB-58FC on November 27, 2012, 04:43:11 PM
Slight overkill is a "slight" understatement IMO considering stock 440's are good for 250-300kw

The only reason you would run injectors that size with the current mods is if you were planning on running E85?

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again

Using the injector calculator 550HP at the flywheel recomended 787cc injectors.
Im not going to stuff an engine by starving it.
Tomei oil pump next.

Dry sump it Pete and never look back  Ross from Ross Balancers  was working on a system should all be done as it was early in the year I was checking it out at his shop  ,,,,,,FC427.....

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on November 27, 2012, 07:13:34 PM
Im running a nismo baffle kit thats why its still running a GTR sump..

All overkill but as long as im happy thats all that matters..

That VL that had the flywheel explode reckons ross has replaced his balancer twice doesnt like getting in the 900hp range ?

I wont ever have that problem.
I fitted a ross balancer to gain more engine bay room as the stock GTR balancer has 4 or 5 ribs and cannot be pulled apart and is about 130mm deep.
The ross one bolts extra pulleys on for accesories.
im only using 1 for alt/water pump its about 50mm deep..

I let them run out and now they are 128 a year from memory...

Pete; from what I've seen of the build so far, I'd venture that its chances of EVER remotely resembling a "sleeper" are about as slim as a match with the wood carved off it...

Great stuff; keep up the excellent work!

(how about 'HOTGREY'  ;D and paint the block grey?)

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on November 28, 2012, 06:21:09 PM
The whole theme of a sleeper or i suppose stock sorta look is what i want.
So rear venetians, spats, scratch plates, sun visor, full stock interior, mint air chief radio, taxi rail, and the wheels with hubcaps, no chrome under the bonnet all cad plated or indian ivory so it looks like its meant to be there.

Heres a sneak peak of the coil pack cover my mate Andrew of http://www.smithskustoms.com/

He Is my best mate and does tons of pinstriping and drawings and hes doing some work on the FC for me

Sorta going along the repco head theme
Going with the bottom one..
Just gotta load it into the engravers at work.

Thats a shame about the plates, mine is still registered (OLD59C) so I don't have that problem. As for the scripts, I'm in favor of the top one, looks more like the script used for the Special badges on the rear and the glovebox.
Regards, Jim

Crazy day...

Got her back on all 4s again just using the pat gardener front end sits way to high..

inner guards/ subframe is getting gas axed changing the design of it so we can have wheel clerance and full lock on the deck.
I want to be able to drive it at its lowest setting..
Rear has heaps of clerance.
Really didnt like the fuglly rallye wheels they had weird size tyres and looked stupid.
so we sat walkinshaws under it till my new ones arrive.

Apparentlly in the mini truck world roof height is everything...
Doesnt really worry me but its 1350mm to the top of the roof which anything under 1400 is low so it should be easy to wash ;D i can rest my arm on the roof with ease..

Worked on the LS1 EK yeste not the FC for the chop shop doing a bit of love swapping between cars. Im good with stainless Lauries good with front ends.

So i got all the crossover pipe and flanged ends finished for them and grained the dump pipes.

waiting on muffelers and cats for both EK and FC now.
FC has moved again and should start doing the front end soon...

I know its not for my build but came up sweet.

Arvo in the shed trying to do the tank for the FC and theres always a distraction .
So after the kids go to bed ill try roll it up.

Got all the body cut
Baffles cut (angle slot bits)
sides cut
All bead rolls put in
Stepped the main body so it looks cool.

They dont come stamped or approved as far as i can see.
But being in the mining industry my mate has a friend who certifies pressure vessels so i wanted them done as the kids will be in the car..

Thats why they are in the quarters and not behind the seat.

Thinking of wrapping all the boot in red vinyl and black like the interior ?
Stinky can the vinyl be glued in so that the beads are still sorta visible ? i guess they could spray glue it down and use a roller to make them more defined..

Ordered some cool clips today

deuz Fastners to hold the rear sheetmetal panels into the car so i can quick release them..

Hi all

Half a day on the fc feel like shit came home and my brakes are here.

Should be big enough 330mm on the front and 315mm on the rear.

Somehow dont think that 13 inch rim would fit over it.

Matt the owner of the battery company is selling these to the mines and they are running them in factory Toyota mine vehicles

And are having no dramas charging off existing charging system standard alternators are fine he assures me.

I am right into R/C planes and run a lot of lithium polymer and charging has got a lot easier over the years with a higher C ratingswe can now smash the amps into them without too much fear of fire or explosions. (brands and C ratings vary a lot)
some modellers run the ION phosphate but i am told they are very user friendlly cells not finiky and volatile like LIPO,s.

those wheels are soooooooooo good
i would paint the centre white and leave the hoop polished
everyone always disagrees when i say that though
when anyone asking me my opinion
to each his own
those rims will be great no matter what
i have dreamt about a big standard lookin rim for years
i LOVE it

I'm really impressed with the look and stance that your car is going to have Pete. I can see that you will have a similar problem to mine. I have 15 x 10 Centrelines on the rear of my project sedan and I hope that I never have a flat tyre out on the road. I think I will need 2 jacks and may have to drop the coil over shock off just so that I can get the wheel out of the wheel well! I was originally going to have longer competition style wheel studs but couldn't even get the wheel on, so I stuck with standard studs. I love the progress you are making and keep the photos coming, your work is inspiring.
Regards Ole.

Really hope the powder coating and hubcap makes a difference on the front or im going to order a set of 17s

They look a bit like a doof doof car all polished up.
hopefully we get the front end finalised soon.

Hi Pete, Are you still running a powerglide. Not saying i have still got them but i might have an original speedo cable and i think a kick down cable for one of these. If you need them i will have a look on the weekend. As i have moved, a lot of stuff is in storage. No cost mate. I had these left over when a put a 350 and powerglide into my work van at the time which was a Holden Shuttle.

what made you look at a glide and not 350,400 or 700
there a few around doing a mercedes conversion for the internal parts on the 700 to make them take a lot more of a beating, + you get the over drive and lockup converter, alowing for a higher rear ratio or lower Cruz rpm

Probablly prefer a TH350
But i had a glide spent big bucks on it RB,s love to rev so it should be right.
If i make it to tassie ill let you know if it pisses me off.
It has th400 billet input shaft bigger pan different clutches ect ect.

The combo is all unknown if i had a mathematician i suppose i could work it out but hopefully it will be right stally is probablly to big.

Running 3.45 ratio now not 3.7 and running a 3200 stally with the 18,s and 40 series tyres??? ???

Hi pete, I went to the storage unit today. I have the speedo cable and i think the kick down cable with bracket. The kick down outer cable and inner cable is damaged. It looks like a header or something has been sitting on it. You may be able to use the ends though on a new cable if you want to go down that path. a quick cal with you final drive to tyre size and if i was you i be getting a nice big trans cooler if you plane to drive it a bit on the fwy

225/40r18 is 25" and 235/40r18 is 25.5" (standard commodore)
3.45:1 and 1:1 in top
give you a 2780 or 2730rpm @60mph
4.11 is what you would need to allow converter to not stall
i try to run 2800 with 3.7 or 3000 with 3.9
never run and higher then 3.9 in a car
but i did drive around with a 5g converter 3.7 for a while, and it was pretty fun

what mad you chose a 3200, or was it decided for you by your cam selection
because you must be somewhere in the 230-235@50 to need one that high

I have a big PWR oil cooler i ordered with the water to air intercooler and radiator.

Stally and all other selections came about as i wanted to race it a bit as well .

But you have me thinking now..

Ill get it all together and change diff gears and stally if need be..
cams  exhaust 270 10.25 lift
 intake 270 10.25 lift

quick change rear
10min and your going again

and depending on you speedo some can have mulity programs and some like the vdo one you just hold a button drive 100m and its set

ive got mates with quick change and they just set spedo to cruze gears and tont worrk about any other, and just the maths in there head as they go

i have to that in most my cars
my vs 110 is 100 and my hilux 80 is 100
fc 60 is 100 (mph)

Lower control arms nearly done.
Upper arms almost done had to stop as the machining for the ball joints wasn't done.
Rear tyres were fitted gunna have to run 35 series now not 40 as it puts all our clearances out.

Still gotta sort out weather we solid mount it or resiliant mount it.

Also the lower control arms are gunna have a fancy gusset and bag mount.

The lower arms are going to have a camber washer on them so it adjustable on the lower.
We got Adjustable upper threads LH and RH from a car joint down the road that does racing products. so it will be adjustable on the uppers and lowers so the wheel alignment man cant have a whinge.

Now i have been doing some reaserch and i can get off the shelf rack ends with M14 threads

Tapa talk is giving me grief this arvy.

Been looking into rack ends spoke to a bloke in QLD can get any length off the shelf rack end with M14 thread and supposedlly Corrolla AE86 tie rod ends fit into the HR steering arms. Also volvo dont know what model tho.

So i dont have to run adaptors then and i can also get some smick looking race version tie rod ends.

Dad modified the VB commodore rack today its narrow took over 200mm out of it its 410mm between pivots "16" and one for a HR front end is "18" the gap between the alloy housing where you weld it together is 20mm :o

Dad takes more off one end and we gain another 2 teeth. he did my front mount rack years ago with great success and he did his one in his a model and another for his T Tudor.

Sorry for the split posts having heaps of dramas between tapa talk and forum on the PC.

Hey Pete, I know youve sorted the front end lower control arms with adjustable camber washers but do you know you can get adjustable bushes. i have them on mine so my adjustment is from the lower control arms only.
Brett

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on April 05, 2013, 07:48:02 PM
We were trying to go the clean look on the bottom and the camber washers just blend it.
Also its going to have a lot going on with the lowers we are putting a fairlly large gusset/ bag mount on the lower  so knowing my luck i would put an adjuster right where a gussets going...

Hang on wheres is your adjustment you have torana front end are they offset bushes on the lowers ?

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: brett_f on April 05, 2013, 09:06:23 PM
Pete. the bushes have an eccentric inner shaft and the bolt is knurled so that when you insert the bolt and turn the bolt it rotates the eccentric bush to give adjustment. The top wish bones are now non adjustable.

Big morning.
Rack is narrowed .
Machined and pressed together as its so narrow.
New rack ends ordered longer.
New eccentric lower camber bolts made using high tensile bolts and waterjet cut washers.
VL manual tie rod end fit HR steering arms. m14 X 2 thread
EA rack ends are longer and fit the VB rack.
Eccentric washers are made and folded for adjustment these weld on the front end.
Rack mounts all cut ready to weld on friday.
All our machining is back so its a big one on friday.

Hi Pete those eccentrics for the lower inners look a lot like Ford design :( :( I have some concerns about welding grade 8 bolts as it is in my experience it has a tendicy to make them more brittle than a lesser grade bolt and are more prone to failure than  due to the fact that they can not absorb shock loads as well as a lesser grade that would stretch and not break just a thought ......FC427.......

Title: Re: Re: Petes FC rebuild again

Big night Thursday night.
Wasnt happy with the VB rack it has the rack ends that the outside of the racks threaded so you cannot just get an off the shelf rack end thats a sealed type unit that bolts on.
So i went to the local wrecker and he had a VL manual rack which is an alloy housing. So i took 185mm out of the housing in the lathe .
And tigged back together in the lathe between centres.
Parted off rack centre section and re tapped M14X2
I used EA falcon rack ends as commodore were to short they are roughly 50mm longer.
Used VL manual tie rod ends as they are M14X2 thread same as EA
I welded all the  eccentric onto the housing.
I fitted the rack tabs to the crossmember all the measurements were perfect dead centre of the steering arms and centred off the lower control arms at ride height (100mm)
Laurie had finished the upper control arms and also the lowers when i got there.
We machined up locating dowels so the crossmember bolts into the subframe and locates.
Still have to make the upper control arm mounts and the air bag mounts.
And ream the upper ball joint holes out to accommodate the larger ball joints.
Going to make our own engine mounts as well i hate factory style ones i want round ones like used in the upper and lower control arms that way we can make a feature of it.
We want to incorporate upper control arm mount, air bag mount, engine mount all into one so it looks smooth.
Aaron fitted a rear gearbox crossmember thats right up in the tunnel no hanging bits here..
Forgot to take any pics of all the rack ect
Laurie sent me a pic after i left . might have more tommorow if he remebers.
It really annoys me forgetting pics just got caught up doing stuff on the car and i was running late for an appointment ..

Thanks for the comments pedro good to hear from you.

Well its friday again we mocked up all new turbos radiator barrel intercooler .
We are running a folded section under the radiator to mount the barrel intercooler in so i dont see a front mount one.

You will only see the bottom radius if you are down really low to the ground.  everything fits great heaps of clerance around radiator and thermo.
I removed all the RB26 oil filter housing as its massive it has a cooler attached for the front diff. So i replaced with a very small and neat RB20 unit.
Started all the intercooler piping should look really smick going thru new inner guards that are coming soon.

Also the Idle (AAC unit think thats it) Valve is massive so i ripped out all out and we are running a haltech remote one.

The thought and fabrication that has gone into the car so far is a credit to you and the boys at The Chop Shop Pete and I cant wait to see the finished product "dragging" down the road.

Big day most piping is  done intake is still not finished back 90 degree bend needs sorting and the front turbo pipe needs to be grafted into the bottom of it.

Also we are using cheap shitty ebay joiners to set up ill buy nice black ones to finish.

Well the baby wouldnt sleep this morning bloody teething
woke at 9 pm still awake at 3am so i went to work and cut all my engine mount/ shockwave mount
assembled ready to install.
Note we are using a nice small bush for the engine mount so the short side goes to the bottom the long section to the top for the air bag mount and notched around the rail.
Laurie drew it up and i sandwiched the plates and tigged round the inside so its detailed just like the diff brackets. should be strong as hell and look the part.

Yep, each job done is one job less. i still find I need sleep (I notice you seem to fill 24 hours of the day without any mention of a proper snooze), then the 5 year old and work take up most of the rest of the time!
Checking other builds has spurred me on so things will be chugging a bit quicker in the future.

Rollin' low Pete  8)  8)

Is that aired out?

those shockwaves look neat, nice engineering!

do u need to run bump stops?

my engineer is asking for 100mm clearance when aired out, on the stops for rego.

Cheers
Ed

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on May 13, 2013, 04:53:18 PM
rear is aired out fronts are not hooked up to the arms so will level up.

And we are going to run nylon blocks as bump stops for rego .

The front wheels clear the guards at full lock but i dont like the look so we are going to raise the lip and make the opening slightlly larger to get it looking right..

I don't like it Pete, I think you should start again bahahaha  :D :D :D, just kidding, I better not joke around like that cos u might.

If u did how many times would that be? Just a question, when we were doing my sills/floor, the bit at the bottom front that holds the bead for the interior is cut off and probably saveable but rusty, but I think I would like another bit and tack in. What have you or others done, it looks like u could leave it out for a modified interior??? Near the kick panel.

Just a couple of plain jane engine mounting brackets ;D

Engine should be mounted tommorow

Drawn by Ryan and Laurie.

Cut and assembled by me this morn.

Yes the edge on one side is chamfered off so i get goo weld penno..

The bush ends are at the chop shop so they will be welded onto each end and the bushes pressed into them.

Should looke cleaner than your average engine mount.

Title: Re: Petes FC rebuild again
Post by: FCRB26 on May 16, 2013, 02:00:37 PM
No i didnt  intend going this far.
But i have a problem im never happy with the finish on something and always want to make it better..

I couldnt bare to cut the old girl up but i wasnt happy with what was done either.

Took some mini truckers with no conscious for the classics  to cut the old girl up and teach me not to be scared to start chopping.
I have the machinery at hand so every time we go to do something I or Laurie say what if we did this or are we capable of doing this just keep coming up with more crazy shit..
Its starting to get out of hand but i really really enjoy assembling custom brackets ect just makes it look so much cooler adding detail to everything..

I want people to look at the detail and they spot something different everytime they see it...

Pete

Pete

I think you can very safely say you've achieved that (and much more!) already...  :) 8)

The phrase "pushing the envelope" comes to mind, but you've completely shredded the bloody envelope some time back...

It's going be extremely interesting to watch this build thru to the finish; the surprises just keep on coming!

It needed to be done to get exhaust clerance.
Today we are finishing intercooler bends and new intake pipe i have waterjet cut all new flanges ect as the old intake looks stupid.

I still cant believe it. Amazing stuff.  Would you consider ceramic coating for the piping? Cost more but using the chrome looking ceramic would look cool. Not that I'm saying anything wrong with powder coating.

Dont want to much shiny stuff no chrome under the bonnet i want it to look like its meant to be there.

So headers and dump pipes all heat coated intake and intercooler piping all cream with subtle  pinstriping in volcanic grey engine covers cream engraved logo into coil cover in grey all intercooler silicon joiners black blow off valve is turbosmart V port in black everything else on engine and engine bay will be anodised silver to look stock bonnet hinges are going to be an issue as i can only get billet ones so might make my own yet. i was going to buy my own anodising kit and do it myself comes with everything.

Hi Waynos only just saw your msg..
we are really stuck for room as the new inner guards will not look anything like they did  and i hate the stock hinges .

we have settled for these ones as im not overlly keen on making my own
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/25667-1031N_1_zps488c2726.jpg) ($2)

Also we have settled for this booster and master cyl as i hate the massive ebay ones and these masters are cheap and smick looking
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/IMG_0626_zps0a95fb84.jpg) ($2)

And another one i bought was this hat off an aussie company adds extra strength to the housing and has 2 large adjustable screws that put pressure on the main caps for rigidity it will either be polished or powder coated ?
(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/20130529_153110_zpsc5f86280.jpg) ($2)

Aaron hand beat this cake tin out thru the week as i want the booster heavilly reccesed in the firewall so it doesnt have a huge big fuglly booster in the engine bay.

Say if a 2j just magically appeared boosted to 22 psi (adjustable) or some shit, would you change the engine or would you still stay rb26. Reason for my question is, did you think it would be a pain mainly cos of the booster and exhaust being on the wrong side? Serious question requiring a serious answer, so if your pissed can u answer in the morning  ;D

I was trying for a bite ;D
I like the sound of the 8s it will be interesting to see what the weight comparison s are tho. I think they wil be similar I know a lot of the parts are lighter but theres so much crap involved it might just get me back up there.
I would not go to this extent again. a 8 even with a low blow charger or something would look so much tidier in there.
As for your question dean its 351am I have been up since 3am with little one . A 2j will need reccesing into firewall heavily  they are really long a mate has one in a ej van very very tight. But anything will fit just keep cutting as the chop shop says.

Car looks great, Pete.

I remember when I first saw a Street Machine spread of Fitzy's second generation FC. It had a huge impact on me; the colour, the stance, the detail, the engineering. It was just right. From that moment on I knew that I wanted an FC. I can't help but think that your build will do the same for many others what Fitzy's car did for me, and introduce young people to a new generation of old Holdens.

Top stuff  8)

I went right over your build page again and my zed mates loved the fab. But they reckon u should end up with a big single turbo instead of the twins, some shit about de-laminating, but apparently more of a problem on 2j's. I'd be happy with what you have there considering the awesomeness of the rest of the build. Amazing how you miss some little things in all the threads. U know what I mean.

Ok Pete, One out of the box. What car engine combos have you had and what car would you own if you could. Ive built and had many V8 Holden and Chev Lc/LJ Toranas and yes wait for it, a Holden shuttle work van with a small block chev/powerglide. This may go viral and have to have a new section.

My best cruiser car was my first one, an GB GS fairmont, 351, fmx. the 250 2v I had also went good which creamed most cars off the lights with its low ratio diff and low weight. I also like zh fairlanes for old school cruise ships. Funnest car was a cortina wagon with 250 crossflow (it was a weapon, went like a shower of shit but didnt stop or turn very well) . Crapiest car was the old Kombi van (1971), others we have had new are BA Futura (2006), BF Futura (2007), VE Commodore (1st one was sedan 2008), VE Sedan (2009),

Most reliable and all round good cars were my current Holden Rodeo workhorse, havent touched it in 7 years and has been thrashed even off road. But thats cos its really an Isuzu!
VX Acclaim was also good.

Other cars were Subaru wagon, Fairmont Ghia XF, Nissan Pulsars, Datun 620 ute, Datsun 521 ute, some Nissans (Pulsar ET was good) etc, Ford Courier, Nissan Navara, Nissan campervan, HZ ute

Best family car is our current VE 2012 VE Sportswagon Sv6 Z , bloody good on fuel. Had some old shitter falcons too, eb, el etc. An old Valiant somewhere along the line. I dont like 80's holdens much. Im sure there are other briefly, Im a big bloke so i dont like sports cars much, but i do like mixing up engines etc. Had many fun paddock type bombs. Its much more fun taking cars off road and have fun than risk it on the road.

Not a very big day today .
Polished all my intake pipes and cleaned all welds off.
Helped Aaron finish his Beutiful inner guards.
I tigged the insides for him and tacked 1 in they need to be seen to understand the complexity of them.
Beutiful work getting the radius into them he has had to stretch and shrink to get it to come round.

I have 2 cnc engravers. The chop shop want me to manufacture build plaques for each car they do .

I wonder can i have all the details engraved on one plate. And either have the cops or the RTA or a JP sign off on a bit of paper or maybe the engineer?? so i do away with chassis number and compliance plate ?
My FE has police numbers that have been stamped at some stage .

I did a tag for a mate who change paint colour on a late model car and he showed the RTA to change it all over... ??? ??? ???

Pete,
i got to the point where you are at the moment on many occasions. Wasn't a lack of money on my behalf although the pockets are only so deep. In the end when it was nearly finished (and everyone else wanted a piece of him) i pulled the car out.

Street machine did a photo shoot yesty great for business and i understand why.
Gotta line up as many potential customers as possible while the cars still fresh.
But they have pretty much all the same cars there as when mine went in there.

Work wise we have been slow so cash aint as free flowing so its helping the pocket.

We only have radiator support and sump , steering and ill bring it home.
We ordered tailshaft and mufflers, hinges and master cylinder yesterday.

Next week im going down there for the day .

Really taking shape now, everything looks to be falling in place just fine. One thing I noticed, with all the firewall mods, where is the wiper motor going to end up??? and have you worked out where the chassis no. is going to end up.
Regards Jim

Wiper is a blingy cable/felt job mounts in the passenger kick panel section I have to fabricate a box to recess into the kick panel.

Going to engrave a compliance tag chassis no all in 1 on a plaque with a cool logo or something.
And ill mount original chassis number and tag under firewall

Full blast and paint do it all properly once on this one.

The wheels are 18x7 and 18x11 you could probably go 7s all round
They are intro wheels

Gone to get the steering and rack sorted out so it has steering.
Ordering a new intake manifold and exhaust manifold and a big single turbo selling the old/new parts.

Pete , just wondering have you ever tried other shifters or shifter kits . I sometimes get my own cables made up . You said early on [in this build] that you were looking for a more original appearance except for the B&M shifter . Many years ago ,building my second Vauxhall I wrecked out a 1950 Hillman Minx for the roof turret ,kept a few items [semaphores ,headlight ring sand indicator glasses etc.] and I noticed only after giving the rest away ,that the gear selector was 4 speed column and changed with the use of 2 rather stiff cables working from levers down the column[similar to the levers on  FC selector rods]. I made up a set of gates just below the dash above the expanded metal section . The problem I found was the length and bends in the cable allowed too much movement in the selection requiring a longer selector on the box . Thinking about it later I thought this same idea could work with steel fuel line as cable outer ,thereby reducing movement and requiring only minimal flex down at the box . Forgot to say we used a version of this at "Rods"  with B&M shifter cables to column shift autos where required . I would just like to see what you could do with this . Forgot to say it but, I still enjoy looking through your build posts .
